DVD Review: Creature

Title: Creature Directed by: Fred Andrews Starring: Mehcad Brooks, Serinda Swan, Daniel Bernhardt, Lauren Schneider, Aaron Hill, Amanda Fuller, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Sid Haig Running time: 93/minutes, Rated R A group of friends traveling through the back country of Louisiana find an almost desolate tourist stop which boasts the legend of Grimley, a murderous Gator-man monster. Within the first two minutes, there’s full frontal nudity, so of course that reeled me in for a bit.  Then it gets a little boring with the group of friends who are taking one last trip together before one of them gets shipped off to Afghanistan. They meet creepy (per usual) Sid Haig  [ Read More ] »

Episode Recap: Hawaii Five-0 - 2.20: "Ha'alele"

10 April 2012 9:56 AM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Sometimes, you just have to let your supporting characters shine. And there is no better example than giving a highly character-driven storyline to a secondary, yet beloved character like Max Bergman (Masi Oka). Back story, angst, and a little bit of suspense all rolled into a nicely done episode that stood on its own despite the lack of it's leading man, Alex O'loughlin. The facts are these: In an opening teaser that could have been snatched from any one of the multitude of Scream movies, a young girl is plucked from her broken-down car on the side of road in North Shore. She's found dead in a pineapple field later, and there are tell-tale signs on the body that disturbs Max greatly. Meanwhile, Steve has left Danny (Scott Caan) a "Dear Danno" letter explaining that he's got to don his Lone Ranger hat once again to seek his father's killer, »

DVD Review: Embarrassingly Bad ‘Creature’ Fails to Terrify, Titillate

5 April 2012 6:59 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – After a particularly long work day, I often find it difficult to coax my mind to sleep. That’s when I turn to Video On Demand for some free and immediate assistance. Most moviegoers would probably search for a familiar comedy or predictable romance to help their eyelids grow heavy in the wee hours of the morning. Yet my insomnia-remedy of choice will always remain FEARnet.

Nothing says instant catatonic coma quite like bargain-basement horror dreck. Titles like “Pinocchio’s Revenge” and “Brotherhood of Blood” are more effective than any dosage of Ambien or Lunesta. That’s because the vast majority of FEARnet fodder has an identical opening. A car full of lusty young adults is careening with carefree abandon down the road when an unexpected obstacle forces them to bunk for a night at the worst possible pla—zzzzzzzzz…

Film Review: Stephen Dorff Gets Trapped in Deeply Flawed ‘Brake’

23 March 2012 7:57 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Chicago – With obvious comparisons to “24” and “Buried,” Gabe Torres’ “Brake” comes with a bit of referential baggage in its trunk. Also in there is Secret Service Agent Jeremy Reins (Stephen Dorff), a man trapped in a nightmarish kidnapping situation in the trunk of a car. He wakes up there and it’s where the vast majority of “Brake” takes place as he’s tortured physically and mentally by a group of terrorists trying to find the Executive Branch’s secret bunker.

Much like “Buried,” “Brake” is a one-man, real-time, claustrophobic location piece. Instead of “Ryan Reynolds in a trunk,” this one is “Stephen Dorff in a coffin,” although it does carve out enough of its own personality to stand apart from the comparisons and not feel like the rip-off that you might expect from the previews. Dorff is stellar and the film builds some tension but a bit too much required suspension of disbelief, »

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 2, Episode 10: ’18 Miles Out’ Recap

27 February 2012 5:56 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

After Lori’s talk to Rick at the end of ‘Triggerfinger,’ it was clear to everyone watching The Walking Dead that Shane’s continued involvement (and existence) weighed heavily on Rick’s mind. Given his penchant for offering everyone a second chance and exhausting every possibility prior to taking drastic action, perhaps it was inevitable that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) would want to discuss the “Shane problem” with the actual Shane – and that’s just what he does in ’18 Miles Out.’

Rick is completely frank with Shane (Jon Bernthal), addressing his partner’s feelings for Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Lori’s unborn child. Rick is even understanding as he bridges the subject of Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince), but the candor, and potential importance of the confrontation is undermined by the painfully ...

TV Review: Justified: Season 3, Episode 3: Harlan Roulette

7 February 2012 6:02 PM, PST | Film-Book | See recent Film-Book news »

Justified Season 3 Episode 3 Harlan Roulette Review. Justified: Season 3, Episode 3: 15 Harlan Roulette introduced a new disreputable character into the show while solidifying two previosuly introduced ones that are growing in importance to the plot of this season.

The aggressive qualities of the bad guys in this episode were good but none of the three was a force to be reckoned with like Mags Bennett was, not yet anyway. Shooting someone is not the same as intimidating and controlling them.

What was very surprising in the episode was that the prison guard Ash Murphy (Todd Stashwick) would risk his job and his pension (in this day and age) for a possible pay day, a pay day of an undetermined amount. He thinks it might be a large amount of money but he has no way of knowing.

The truck crash was hilarious but that is what happens when you hire »

Matt's Most Memorable Moments: Kristen Bell Times Two!

3 February 2012 2:18 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

I'm breaking all the rules this week, TV Fanatics. And it's all the fault of Kristen Bell.

Typically, my Moments of the Week are reserved for the funniest, most surprising and/or most dramatic scenes from the last few days of primetime television. But then the House of Lies star appeared on Ellen, talked about sloths and - sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself...

5. The return of Ringer. It hasn't been the sort of ratings hit that The CW anticipated, but few shows offer as many twists and turns and, come on. The alternative for The CW over the last couple weeks had been Remodeled. Epic Fail.

4. The appearance of Pruitt Taylor Vince on Justified. Few men can go toe-to-toe, or gun-to-gun, with Raylan Gives. But this guest star introduced viewers to a game of Harlan Roulette that instantly elevated him into the pantheon of incredible Justified villains.
