After announcing that she wants to try her hand at a vegan lifestyle on The Ellen DeGeneres show, Meredith Vieira has finally taken the plunge.
After her appearance, Vieira received a copy of Paul McCartney's book on slaughterhouses, Glass Walls, from PETA along with a vegetarian/vegan starter kit and The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen. It seems PETA's generosity helped Vieira make the switch.
"I've done a lot of stories on the way food is, you know, processed in this country -- animals -- and it's very disturbing," she said.

Ann Curry addressed the "Today" show's recent ratings difficulties during an awards luncheon in New York City on Monday.
Curry was a recipient of a New York Women in Communications 2012 Matrix Award. The awards recognize eight women "whose leadership and achievements have helped change the world of communications."
Curry spoke of her passion for reporting and respect and admiration for her team at "Today." She noted that she was not praising her bosses in an attempt to suck up to them, but joked that "recent ratings events might dictate that I should."
For the first week in 16 years, ABC rival "Good Morning America" brought in more total viewers than the "Today" show, breaking the longest running ratings winning streak in morning television history.
"Today" hosts including Hoda Kotb, Natalie Morales and Al Roker were in attendance at the Matrix Awards to support Curry and former "Today" host Meredith Vieira, who »

Today was a banner day on The View, as one of the original co-hosts, Meredith Vieira, joined the panel to talk about the possibility of returning to morning television, as well as her new media ventures since leaving her co-anchor position at The Today Show. She entered the set to wild applause from the audience, and all of the co-hosts looked thrilled to see her. Most of the segment was devoted to catching up on Vieira's life, including her three college-aged kids, but the panel had some questions for her about a possible return to the morning show. Vieira will be reporting on the summer Olympics and the queen's jubilee this summer, giving rise to rumors that she might be asked to return to NBC. »

Matt Lauer spoke candidly about his decision to return to "Today," his ongoing chemistry with co-host Ann Curry and Katie Couric's "Good Morning America" guest hosting stint in a wide-ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter's Marisa Guthrie.
After almost a year of speculation, Lauer announced on April 6 that he had signed a new, "long-term" deal to remain as a "Today" host. The announcement came as the long-running morning show wars escalated sharply in their intensity, as the ratings between "Today" and "Gma" have tightened.
The new deal with Lauer was signed and sealed just 36 hours after he called NBC CEO Steve Burke and confirmed he would return, Guthrie wrote.
"This is a second family," he told THR, echoing what he said on the air when he announced the new deal. "It's impossible to leave."
Lauer also spoke about Couric's controversial return to morning television on "Good Morning America." Her »

In one of the most closely watched ratings races, NBC’s Today show topped Good Morning America last week when the ABC program had former Today star Katie Couric as guest co-host. With hyped appearances by Meredith Vieira on Monday, Sarah Palin on Tuesday, Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday and veteran host Matt Lauer announcing his new deal on Friday, Today drew 5.11 million viewers last week, up 11% from the previous week. Gma (4.90 million) got a smaller boost in viewership, up 1%. Among adults 25-54, both shows actually declined slightly. Today (2.14 million) was down 2%, Gma (1.83 million) was down 5%. Gma won Wednesday in total viewers, with the other 4 days going to Today. »

At least one former "Today" alum was not impressed with the show's decision to bring in Sarah Palin as a co-host last week.
Bryant Gumbel, who led the show for fifteen years and returned to "Today" for its sixtieth anniversary reunion show, told Howard Kurtz that he was "embarrassed" by the move.
NBC brought in Palin as a response to Katie Couric's week-long stint on rival "Good Morning America." It became the most hyped iteration of the long-running morning show wars for some time. "Today" is pulling out all the stops to fend off a resurgent "Gma" in the ratings. Palin's one-day gig helped top the ABC show. ("Today" also brought back Meredith Vieira, officially dubbing her a "legend."
Palin was both interview subject and host during her Tuesday appearance, shifting from heated denunciations of Barack Obama to light-hearted conversation with Tori Spelling.

Matt Lauer announced yesterday that he has renewed his contract for his top-rated national morning show, NBC’s ‘Today,’ Deadline is reporting. His new contract will begin when his current contract expires at the end of the year. The news of the host’s new long-term contract comes as ‘Today’s rival show, ABC’s ‘Good Morning America,’ has significantly closed the ratings gap over the past year. The news comes after questions were raised last year when Lauer’s former co-host, Meredith Vieira, left ‘Today.’ Rumors circulated that Ryan Seacrest would replace Lauer after the ‘American Idol’ host met with ‘Today’s executive producer. The reports were proven false when Seacrest visited the show on [ Read More ] »

The ratings war tilted back in favor of "Today" on Thursday as the the NBC morning show beat ABC rival "Good Morning America."
"Today" brought in 5.07 million total viewers, compared to 4.638 million for "Gma." While "Today" also won the coveted 25-54 demo, the audience gap between the two shows was the smallest of the entire week with "Gma" trailing by only 228,000 viewers.
When news broke that former "Today" host Katie Couric was filling in for "Gma's" Robin Roberts for an entire week, NBC countered by pulling out its own bells and whistles. Former "Today" host Meredith Vieira stopped by the set on Monday, Sarah Palin guest-hosted for an hour on Tuesday, and Ryan Seacrest announced he was joining the network's prime time coverage of the Olympics on Wednesday. "Today" pulled out its biggest weapon late Thursday night, when the network announced that host Matt Lauer had signed a multi-year contract extending his role at "Today. »

NBC’s Today sure is throwing everything they can against Katie Couric’s week-long stint on rival Good Morning America. After Today got Sarah Palin to co-host on Tuesday and brought in Meredith Vieira on Monday and Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday to announce their participation in NBC’s Olympic coverage, the NBC morning show saved the biggest announcement for last. Tomorrow morning, on the last day of Couric’s stint on Gma, Today co-host Matt Lauer will unveul that he has signed a new long-term deal that will keep him at the top-rated morning show after his current contract is up at the end of the year. The news was first reported by the NYTimes. The move brings stability to Today, which has seen its decades-old dominance challenged by Gma, which has closed significantly the ratings gap with its NBC rival over the past year. This week, Gma edged Today in total viewers on Wednesday, »

In day two of this week's morning show wars, NBC's Today show got enough of a boost from Sarah Palin to win the race over Good Morning America, which enlisted former Today co-host Katie Couric in a bid to reel in ratings.
Preliminary figures reveal that Today attracted 5.5 million viewers during Tuesday's show -- an increase of about 100,000 over its usual numbers -- compared to 5.14 million for Gma, which normally pulls in an average of 4.9 million people, according to TheWrap.com.
In the crucial 25 to 54 demographic, Today was slightly down from its normal 2.0 rating with a 1.8 on Tuesday, while Gma retained its typical 1.6.
On Monday, both shows were down from their seasonal averages, despite it being Couric's first day filling in at Gma for vacationing anchor Robin Roberts, and even though Couric's replacement on Today, Meredith Vieira, returned to NBC for the morning after her departure last year. »

Ryan Seacrest stopped by "Today" Wednesday morning (April 4) to make a big announcement - but no, he's not taking Matt Lauer's anchor job, a rumor that has been flying since last December when Seacrest met with some head honchos from NBC Universal.
Instead, Seacrest will be joining the NBC primetime team for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Former "Today" anchor Meredith Vieira has already announced that she will be joining the Olympics coverage team as well.
Seacrest also didn't come right out and officially announce his return to "American Idol," but he did say, "I plan to stay there. I think I'll have an official announcement very, very soon. I expect to be on that show."
Of course, there were plenty of jokes about Seacrest taking Lauer's job. Seacrest cracked, "I see you doing this for »

Katie Couric’s heavily promoted return to morning television did not result in a ratings win for ABC’s Good Morning America. On Monday, the first day of Couric’s week-long stint on Gma, ABC’s morning program averaged 4.78 million viewers to 5.11 million for NBC’s Today, according to fast-national ratings. In adults 25-54, Gma pulled 1.76 million viewers (1.5 rating) to Today‘s 2.20 million (1.8 rating). Ironically, in the last Monday for which final ratings have been released, March 19, Gma edged Today (4.974 million vs. 4.926 million) with regular female host Robin Roberts. Today threw in a mystery “Today legend” stunt against Couric’s Gma debut on Monday, which turned out to be Meredith Vieira. The NBC morning show will likely repeat its ratings victory on Tuesday with Sarah Palin’s headline-making guest hosting turn. Preliminary ratings for CBS This Morning‘s Monday edition, which featured an interview with Oprah Winfrey, are not available yet. »

A knock-down, drag-out fight between the two principal morning talk shows began this morning (Monday) with Katie Couric returning to the air on ABC’s Good Morning America at the same time of day that she did when she co-hosted NBC’s Today show. Couric, who will be filling in for Robin Roberts this week, acknowledged that she was “a bit nervous” as she joined what for her was once the enemy camp, doing mostly celebrity interviews and confiding to co-host George Stephanopoulos, “I’m riding shotgun. I’m a little rusty.” With Couric, ABC is hoping to come out ahead in the ratings war against rival NBC for the first full week since 1995. (It beat Today on two mornings in October 2007.) Her return received high praise from Washington Post TV writer Lisa de Moraes, who commented, “Katie’s back where she belongs.” Meanwhile, ABC is waging a counterattack by teaser. »

The first salvo in this week's incredibly hyped, incredibly contentious morning-show wars was fired this morning, as one-time resident Today show perkfest Katie Couric took her talents over to rival Good Morning America. Her debut—she fills in for a spring-breaking Robin Roberts all week—came just as Today's other former cohost, Meredith Vieira, just happened to drop by her old Today haunt, and one day before Couric will face off against the woman whose name she made (and, lest we forget, not in a good way): Sarah Palin. So, how'd Couric do? Just as she always has—there's a reason this woman lasted on morning television for so long. Wasting no time in commiserating »
