Young Bruce Lee biopic 'Little Dragon' finds a director

The film will follow the early years of the martial arts superstar.

Shekhar Kapur is set to direct a film about the early years of late martial arts star Bruce Lee, Little Dragon, to be produced by the star’s daughter Shannon Lee with backing from Chinese investors.

Shannon Lee, who runs Bruce Lee Entertainment, has co-scripted the project with Kapur and will produce with Tim Kwok of Convergence Entertainment.

Set in 1950s Hong Kong, the film follows a young Bruce Lee as he comes to terms with his family’s disappointment, young love, betrayal and racism in the early years of his international career.

A worldwide casting search to find the actor to play the teenaged Bruce Lee was launched last week by Us casting director Mary Vernieu and several casting associates around the globe.

The Us-Hong Kong-China co-production is financed by Dadi Media Group, Beijing Golden World Pictures, Shanghai Longzhilin »

Shekhar Kapur is to direct “Little Dragon,” an authorized biopic of martial arts legend Bruce Lee.

The story is a contemporary dramatization of the 1950s Hong Kong social and political forces that shaped Bruce Lee into both the most famous martial arts star of all time and a significant modern day philosopher. Themes include family disappointment, young love, true friendship, betrayal, racism, deep poverty and an inner fire that threatened to unravel his destiny

Production is by Bruce Lee Entertainment, a company operated by Lee’s daughter Shannon Lee, along with Los Angeles-based Convergence Entertainment.

Shannon Lee conducted significant new research into her father’s youth and formative years, a subject which has previously been tangentially explored in numerous moves including Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster” and the rival “Ip Man” franchise movies respectively directed by Wilson Yip and Herman Yau. The formative years and young adventures of martial arts legend Bruce Lee are set to get the big-screen treatment.

Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, director of the Oscar-nominated biopics Elizabeth (1998) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), has signed on to co-write and direct Little Dragon, a feature film about Bruce Lee's early days in the colorful world of 1950s Hong Kong.

Veteran Hollywood casting director Mary Vernieu is currently leading a worldwide search for the actor to play the charismatic teenage Lee.

John Williams Wins 5th Grammy for Force Awakens, Goes to Work on Last Jedi

The Grammy Awards aired last night, although some of the awards were handed out Sunday afternoon, before the live telecast. One of the awards that was given was to John Williams, who won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, beating out Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight, Thomas Newman for Bridge Of Spies, Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto for The Revenant, and Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein for Netflix's Stranger Things. Ennio Morricone actually beat out John Williams at the Oscars last year. We also have word that John Williams has already starting working on Star Wars: The Last Jedi score, 10 months before the movie hits theaters.

It's official. Star Wars Episode VIII is titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Disney and Lucasfilm announced the news on StarWars.com today. The news arrived with this brief PR.

The guild award nominations keep coming in. The Casting Society of America has announced the nominees in its feature film categories for the 32d annual Artios Awards, which honor outstanding achievement in casting. “Arrival,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” “Hidden Figures,” “Nocturnal Animals” and “The Girl on the Train” all picked up nods in the big-budget drama category, with “Captain Fantastic,” “Jackie,” “Lion,” “Loving” and “Manchester by the Sea” doing likewise in the studio or independent drama field.
