'Musketeers' gets German Film Board cash

Cologne, Germany -- Paul W.S. Anderson's "Three Musketeers" reboot has picked up another €1 million ($1.3 million) in German subsidies, this time from the German Film Board.

The 3-D period epic stars Christoph Waltz, Orlando Bloom and Mads Mikkelsen alongside Musketeers Matthew Macfadyen, Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans and is set to begin shooting in Germany late August. The production has already secured €2 milion ($2.6 million) in production funding from regional sources. Millions more will come via Germany's tax fund, the Dfff. Constantin Film is producing.

In its other funding decisions announced Friday, the German Film Board is playing for laughs -- backing comedies "Russian Disco" from Oliver Schmitz ($712,000); Til Schweiger's "Kokowaa" ($388,000); rom-com "Offroad" starring Nora Tschirner ($453,000) and "Men in the City 2," Simon Verhoeven's sequel to his 2009 comedy hit, which Wiedemann & Berg are producing ($453,000). »

Berlin board backs laffers in funding round

Cologne, Germany -- The Berlin-Brandenburg film board rewarded success in its latest round of subsidy hand-outs, signing checks for new projects from star multi-hyphenate Til Schweiger and production powerhouse Widemann & Berg.

Schweiger picked up €900,000 ($1.1 million) in production subsidies for his latest feature, "kokowaa," in which he will star as a luckless screenwriter and single dad struggling to raise his eight year-old daughter (played by Schweiger's own child, Emma Tiger). Schweiger will also produce "kokowaa."

Widemann & Berg received €750,000 ($918,000) towards the sequel to their rom-com hit "Men in the City." Director Simon Verhoeven returns to helm the new film, which goes under the original title "Mannerherzen...und die ganz, ganz, grosse Liebe." Most of the stars of the orignal "Men in the City," including Christian Ulmen and Justus von Dohnanyi, will reprise their roles in the sequel. The first "Men in the City" earnd some $18 million at the local boxoffice for distributor Warner Bros. »

'Flower,' 'Kater' share Bavarian film prize

Berlin -- Sherry Horman's fashion biopic "Desert Flower" and the political drama "Der Grosse Kater" (The Big Tom-Cat) from director Wolfgang Panzer tied for the top prize as Best Film at the Bavarian Film Awards this weekend.

"Flower" producers Peter Herrmann and Dietmar Guntsche and "Kater" producer Wolfgang Behr will share the €200,000 ($287,000) award that comes with the honor, cash that has to be invested in new film projects.

Acting legend Barbara Sukowa added a Bavarian best actress trophy to her trophy cabinet, taking the honor for her portrayal of Medieval nun and proto-feminist Hildegard von Bingen in "Vision" from Magarethe von Trotta.

Best director went to Juraj Herz for his period drama "Habermann," with lead Mark Waschke taking the best actor prize for his role as a mill owner whose life is transformed with the onset of World War II.

Benjamin Heisenberg received the best newcomer nod for his sophomore effort, »
