Victoria Season 1 Review

Three episodes was provided prior to broadcast.

One of the downsides to living in the new Golden Age of Television is that some shows, decent in their own right, will inevitably suffer in comparison to the best of the best.

I fear that may be the fate of Victoria, which has its U.S. premiere later tonight. The show presents inevitable comparisons to Netflix’s The Crown in its tale of one of England’s most famous queens, at times rising to the challenge of its competitor, and at other times, falling a bit short.

The series opens at the very beginning of Victoria’s famous reign. King William is dead and his niece, Alexandrina Victoria (Jenna Coleman), a girl of eighteen, will ascend to the throne. She’s lived a sheltered and inexperienced life at Kensington, reared under the strict oversight of her mother, the Duchess of Kent (Catherine Flemming

Film Review: 'Lessons in Love'

  • CineVue
★☆☆☆☆The warning signs are there even before the opening credits roll. Lessons in Love (2014) - the UK title of Tom Vaughan's latest - went through two prior iterations for its appearance in Canadian (How To Make Love Like An Englishman) and Us (Some Kind of Beautiful) cinemas. Unfortunately, much like giving someone the same present for Christmas, Easter and their birthday, no matter how this rom-com is gift wrapped the resultant 99 minutes of your life will feel as hollow and wasted as receiving an empty box.

Lessons In Love review: “A disappointing clichéd mess”

Lessons In Love review: Brosnan fails to ignite this very disappointing romantic comedy. Lessons In Love review

Pierce Brosnan headlines this new ‘comedy’ from Tom Vaughan, a filmmaker who cut his teeth as a director on British TV with the likes of the excellent, and indeed ground-breaking Cold Feet, before hitting gold with his feature debut Starter For Ten; one of the best British movies to be released back in 2006. Here, in a film that was released Stateside as Some Kind Of Beautiful, Vaughan delivers one of the biggest duds of the year; an clichéd mess of a movie that fails on pretty much every level.

Brosnan plays Richard Haig, a Cambridge professor who impregnates one of his students (played by Jessica Alba), and so moves to Los Angeles to a new life just before their son is born. Things don’t turn out all that well for the new couple,

Just one day before Season 9 of Doctor Who debuts, BBC confirmed that actress Jenna Coleman is leaving the series. The network isn't revealing exactly when the actress will part ways with the show, only confirming that it will happen at some point during Season 9. Here's what Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi had to say about his departing companion in a statement.

"Jenna has been absolutely brilliant. I think she's wonderful in the show, and she's my favorite companion."

Jenna Coleman made her Doctor Who debut on September 1, 2012 as Oswin Oswald in Asylum of the Daleks. She returned on Christmas Day of that year, playing Clara and remained with the Eleventh Doctor from the following episode, The Bells of Saint John, onwards. She stayed on board the Tardis for all of Peter Capaldi's episodes to date. BBC hasn't announced who will replace Jenna Coleman yet, but it is believed that

Film Review: ‘Some Kind of Beautiful’

Film Review: ‘Some Kind of Beautiful’
There comes a point in “Some Kind of Beautiful” when a boy, his father and his grandfather stand together on a pier, unzip their flies and proudly urinate into the Pacific Ocean — a scene of intergenerational bonding that Salma Hayek watches from afar with an affectionate “Aww, isn’t that sweet” expression on her face. It’s a wretched moment for any actress to have to play, though it’s certainly preferable to the one in which Hayek imitates a series of noisy, grunting male orgasms in front of two prim school administrators, whose expressions of withering unamusement will likely be matched by the audience’s own. From first frame to last, “Some Kind of Beautiful” is some kind of hideous, a perfect storm of romantic-comedy awfulness that seems to set the ailing genre back decades with the sheer force of its ineptitude. Commercially and artistically, this Lionsgate atrocity is

Some Kind of Nonsense: Vaughan’s Unintentional Antithesis of the RomCom

Not long into Some Kind of Beautiful, the new film from director Tom Vaughan, a man best known for his 2008 Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz film What Happens in Vegas, it becomes achingly clear that someone, somewhere pitched this film with intentions of crafting a romantic comedy. However, the film wasn’t painted in shades of either, and has the opposite effect of deadening emotional receptors. Staunchly filled with resolutely sturdy clichés in the hoary tradition of the aging lothario coming to uncertain terms with his playboy instinct and need for companionship, Vaughan and first time screenwriter Matthew Newman glide through this set-up with an icy dazedness, as if daring us to wade through its fretful yet uneventful schemes to an outcome prophesized from the moment its three leads converge.
