DVD Playhouse—April 2012

By Allen Gardner

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan, »

Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks: Pickford-Fairbanks Studios Filmmaker Allison Anders will be present at a protest "to lead all supporters" of the old Pickford-Fairbanks Studios, which is set to be (at least partially) torn down in the near future. Located at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Formosa in West Hollywood, the studio currently known as The Lot was bought by the Cim Group, which intends to expand facilities by demolishing near-century-old buildings. The protesters, who have named April 1 "Pickfair Day," are scheduled to assemble outside The Lot at 1 p.m. According to the Save Pickfair Studio website, protest organizers "will, as time and technology allows, be live tweeting and blogging our protest." Organizers suggest that protesters should "bring your friends and all the press," in addition to video and phone cameras. They explain that street parking shouldn't be a problem on a Sunday. 3 February 2012 2:18 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Everyone has their own opinion as to who will win Sunday's (Feb. 5) Super Bowl between New England Patriots and the New York Giants. Odds makers have New England favored by three points. But as we all know, on any given Sunday, anything can happen.

Every year since 1986, Scripps Howard news service asks people from around the world of entertainment, politics and sports who they think will win the big game. It looks like the predictions are pretty much evenly split this year.

Here are some of the best comments. Who do you think will win?

Hollywood

Brad Pitt: "Oooh, that's a tough one."

Arnold Schwarzenegger: New England, 31-24. I can't pick against my neighbor, especially when he is playing at such a high level. Tom Brady will be the Super Bowl Mvp.

Jenna Fischer: New England, 31-28. This pick is based mainly on the fact that my husband is from Dallas. »
