A week in radio: Dustin Hoffman on Desert Island Discs

6 December 2012 4:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The music choices became sidenotes as the Hollywood star struck up an affable rapport with Kirsty Young

"A 'funny guy' was a nice way of putting it. I was a real loser," he says of his teens in that pleasingly deep nasal honk. Hoffman's aunt told him he was too ugly to be an actor and he later describes The Graduate as "a freak accident that was never meant to be".

It is a familiar celebrity narrative, this – the "doomed to be a failure, »

20 May 2012 9:40 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: Gordon Yang

Written by: Andrew Erin and Jason Bourque

Featuring: Lou Diamond Phillips, Nicole de Boer, Greg Evigan, Sophie Gendron

I live in an extraordinary time; I have had the rare privilege of being born at the exact right moment that would allow me to watch the rise, and fall, of Lou Diamond Phillip’s stardom.

Ever since I saw him at his height in Young Guns (almost as brilliant as the sequel, Young Guns II), just a scant few years after his portrayal of '50s rocker Ritchie Valens, I have secretly been saddened by his waning acting career.

Bobby Vee diagnosed with Alzheimer's

St. Paul, Minn. (AP) — Former 1960s teen pop idol Bobby Vee says he's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The 69-year-old, born Robert Velline in Fargo, N.D., says on his website that he was diagnosed last year. Vee was catapulted to stardom after the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Jp "Big Bopper" Richardson in a 1959 plane crash en route to Moorhead, Minn. Vee and his friends filled in for the trio at the Moorhead performance and soon after that he recorded his first single, "Suzie Baby," for Soma Records in Minneapolis.
