Recap: 'American Idol' Season 14 - Top 12 Performances and an Elimination

12 March 2015 8:16 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Sorry about the delay, kids. I had to be doing PaleyFest 2015 red carpet coverage for Starz's "Outlander," so I was talking about wedding nights and spankings and I missed doing my normal Eastern Time "American Idol" live-blog.  And, in fact, I got home nearly 20 minutes into the Pacific Time airing of "Idol." So let's play a game and see how quickly I'm able to catch up with the live broadcast... Follow through for my full recap of Thursday's (March 12) Top 12 performances and the first solo elimination of the season. 8:00 p.m. (in show time, but 8:24 in my time) Fortunately, I remember last night, so I can trim a minute off here. 8:01 p.m. I missed last night's Top 12 Party because of timing. I'm just missing everything. 8:02 p.m. I can't fast-forward through Ryan Seacrest, because he's going to explain the show. Also, I can't miss the Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show. »

No Sour Notes: Top Ten Fictional Bands in the Movies

8 March 2015 6:38 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The thought of snapping your fingers to the tunes of your favorite fictional bands in film seems rather unreal. After all these movie music-makers seem like the “reel” deal in terms of their celluloid artistry and sense of colorful on-screen showmanship.

However, some of the fictional bands or musical acts we know very well and consider so fondly actually morph into real-life acts. Also, there are real-life bands that share a “fictionalized existence” on screen as well (for instance one can try and divide the musical phenomenon of The Beatles as treasured pop cultural entities from the mop top maniacs they portrayed on the big screen in A Hard’s Day Night or Help. Some may argue they were the one in the same in front of and away from the rolling cameras).

Whatever your definition of what constitutes a favorable fictional band in film at the present moment just »

Smokey Robinson Remembers 'We Are the World' 30 Years Later

6 March 2015 4:31 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

It's hard to believe but it was 30 years ago tomorrow that "We Are The World" was released. Smokey Robinson was among the music superstars who were there and Et asked Smokey to relive that historic day back in 1985.

News: Pop Culture History Lesson: "We Are the World" Turns 30

"I had no idea that all those people were going to be there, but everybody in show business was there!" Smokey told Et.

The song featured 45 artists all together, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper. Michael and Lionel wrote the song and charity single meant to raise funds for USA for Africa.

The charity, aimed at easing famine, is still active today and has raised more than $75 million.

Pop Culture History Lesson: 'We Are the World' Turns 30

6 March 2015 1:28 PM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

It's hard to bet on the future, but of this I'm certain: Three decades from now, I'll still know every lyric to "We Are the World."

Released 30 years ago this week, the chart-topping charity single occupies at least as much space in my brain as my second-grade teacher (who made our class sing it repeatedly) and my first Sony Walkman (purchased around the time of its release).

News: Pop Songs Meant For Other Singers

"We Are the World" wasn't just a pop-culture event; it was a bona fide movement. Inspired by the success of Band Aid's 1984 charity release, Do They Know It's Christmas?, entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte came up with the idea to record an American track for famine relief in Africa.

Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian produced the song, which was penned by two of the biggest musicians at the height of their fame: Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. More than 45 other »

The Voice UK: Autumn, Mitch - Who had the best audition?

21 February 2015 12:35 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Golly, they left that to the last minute, didn't they? The coaches on The Voice UK have now completed their teams after the last episode of blind auditions - but for a while we weren't sure if they'd manage it, as Sir Tom and will.i.am left it to the final two acts. Talk about cutting it fine.

We don't actually know how they found time to turn for the six final acts in between all the confetti cannon hiding (will.i.am being sheepish is the best), dancing and singing to S Club's 'Reach', and general Ricky Wilson silliness (including, er, a striptease), but they did! Read on as we assess those lucky six (and the poor eight who didn't make it...)

1. Mitch Miller

Song: 'Fancy' - Iggy Azalea

Team: Team Rita

The Voice: The coaches complete their teams - at the very last minute

21 February 2015 12:26 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

The Voice UK coaches completed their teams tonight - but will.i.am left it to the very last minute.

Ricky Wilson was the first star to get a full group of contestants after picking up Autumn Sharif. He was followed by Rita Ora, who added Vanessa Hunt and Mitch Miller to her team to reach 12 acts.

Once Sir Tom Jones had picked up country singer Roisin Geraghty-McDonagh, both he and will.i.am had just one spot left.

However, both of them failed to turn for a number of acts until it reached the point where there were just two singers left waiting to audition - meaning that both Sir Tom and will.i.am had to turn for the penultimate singer, Lisa Ward from the Shetland Islands.

She chose to join Sir Tom's team, giving will.i.am no option but to turn for the very last auditionee »

American Idol Recap: Sleepless? Please Skedaddle!

“Can anybody find me somebody to love?”

I posed one of Queen’s most plaintive lyrics for most of Wednesday’s American Idol “Group Rounds” telecast — and unfortunately, only a handful of contestants answered the call. There were forgotten lyrics, cacophonous harmonies, a few instances of face-down-on-the-carpet exhaustion and a smattering of “I didn’t come here to make friends” squawking. But “Holy crap, I want to know that contestant’s 877-number so I can start voting for him/her right this second!” vocals were in short supply.

VH1 ‘Divas Live': Salute to Chart-Topping Femmes Ignited New Era

In the late ’90s, women ruled the pop charts, but it took Ken Ehrlich to unite the performers and usher in a new Era of the Diva.

In 1998, Ehrlich and VH1 launched “Divas Live,” an annual benefit for the channel’s Save the Music Foundation that showcased the towering talents of both the day’s top female artists and the legends that influenced them.

Nearly 20 years later, the inaugural edition, which aired live from New York’s Beacon Theater, still stands out for Celine Dion, the first artist who officially signed on to appear.

“To me, the show felt like a very important career moment,” she says. “I mean I had the chance to share the stage with these amazing ladies … Gloria Estefan, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Carole King, and the one and only Aretha Franklin, who was one of my idols growing up. Criterion Collection: The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant | Blu-ray Review

20 January 2015 10:00 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in the summer of 1972, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant didn’t open to ecstatic reception. Treated with the sort of contempt that artistic endeavors later recuperated as being ‘ahead of their time’ are often subjected to, conservative audiences dismissed it as bleak and artificial, while queer audiences denounced it as an exploitational freak show. Decades later, time has come for a reexamination of one of Fassbinder’s finest achievements, arriving early on in his titles inspired by the works of Douglas Sirk, for which the title of this most certainly evokes. Shot in ten days, and presumed to have been written by Fassbinder by hand on a flight from Berlin to Los Angeles, it features three of his most beloved actresses, each with whom he shared a different type of relationship. Lifetime's Whitney biopic is the same old cheap and cheesy fare

16 January 2015 2:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The cable channel has made a name for itself with its gauche portrayals of stars who died too young. You can add Whitney to that list

Whitney is a fairly misleading title for Lifetime’s new Whitney Houston biopic, which debuts on Saturday 17 January at 8pm Et. It should probably be called Whitney and Bobby: The First Five Years, if we’re going for accuracy, or Whitney and Bobby: Before It All Went to Shit, if we’re trying to be arch.

Lifetime has a bit of a cottage industry making these lackluster biographical movies of celebrities who died before their time (recent editions include Brittany Murphy and Aaliyah). This one is no different other than the blockbuster talent it has behind the camera. Whitney is the directorial debut for Angela Bassett, a woman more famous for her relationship with Tina Turner (she played her in the biopic What’s »
