From 100 Nude Women to Police in 'Riot Gear,' Protests Kick Off the Gop Convention
Mark Twain famously said, "Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." But he never saw the 100-plus women who posed nude outside the Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland to protest the Republican convention. The women - who held up large, round mirrors facing the arena, where the convention is being held this week - were participating in a performance art piece from artist Spencer Tunick called "Everything She Says Means Everything." Women of all different ages, shapes and races showed up for the demonstration on the eve of the convention, some to protest the Republican Party itself,

Charlie Brooker's Screen burn: The Naked Office

'After watching them walk around clothed, you don't want to see this workforce naked'

A few weeks ago thousands of volunteers stripped off to pose for Spencer Tunick, for what must be his 500th photographic study of several thousand nudes. How many sets of genitals do you think he's laid eyes on throughout his career? The man must've seen more shivering naked bodies than Caligula in his prime.

Whenever one of Tunick's stunts makes it on to the news – ie each time he does one – the report is rounded out with a few soundbites from participants in which they explain how "empowered" and privileged they felt to help form a work of art. Good for them, because I know for a fact that if I took part, I'd spend the whole time staring at tits and bums, thinking, "Look at all these tits and bums", with one half of my brain,

Afternoon Meme: Adam, Clay, and DanRad Do Good, Dancing In Ski Boots, plus Mardis Gras and Bull Dogs

  • The Backlot
This work week seems to be starting off with word of a lot of celebrities doing good. What a change from the regular of celebrities behaving badly, though possibly not nearly as interesting.

The oldest clip has been run everywhere, but as I've said everywhere on social media, it deserves a second look. Daniel Radcliffe has recorded a Public Service Announcement (PSA) for the Trevor Project, the national Glbt suicide prevention hotline. And then he's been doing press for the PSA to raise the profile of this great organization. What impresses me most about all of this is that DanRad doesn't have a movie to promote - too often we only see celebrities doing good if they have a project. This seems to just be a genuine interest in the issue.

  • Cinematical
Indie Roundup, your weekly dose of what's happening (slightly) outside the mainstream.

Deals. Via our friends at indieWIRE, we learn that Brian Baugh's faith-based To Save a Life will be released by Samuel Goldwyn Films in January 2010. The film follows an "all-American teen" boy dealing with the aftermath of a friend's death. Cross-cultural romantic drama Cairo Time, starring Patricia Clarkson, will hit theaters and on-demand home viewing systems sometime in the new year, courtesy of IFC Films. Bradley Rust Gray's The Exploding Girl will open in early 2010 through Oscilloscope Laboratories. Zoe Kazan stars as a young college woman dealing with conflicting romantic feelings while home in New York for spring break.

Online / On Demand Viewing. Two recommendations this week, both for titles that are newly available through Amazon's VOD service. Susan Seidelman's Smithereens is a quintessentially New York picture and a fiercely independent experience from a

Full Frontal Nudity is a College Sport in ‘Streak to Win’

  • Tilzy.TV
In the early 1970’s, on the ivy-covered campus of Princeton University, one first spied sophomores running naked through the school’s hallowed halls and prancing upon its manicured quads. Though its conception is shrouded in mystery, the Nude Olympics was a cult staple of the University for nearly three decades, beloved by students and predictably hated on by faculty and alumni. In 1999, after threats of year-long suspensions graduated from the category of “idle” to “very real,” the bacchanalian games came to an abrupt end. In its heyday, Princeton’s streak fest wrangled hundreds of student bodies, enticed them to shuffle off their clothed coils despite frigid temperatures, and created the greatest spectacle of naked flesh outside of a Spencer Tunick photograph. Still, the Naked Olympics ain’t got nothin’ on the Hamilton College Varsity Streaking Team. Unlike Princeton, the beginnings of Hamilton’s tradition are far easier to decipher. Established
