His Imperial Highness, The Heir, Tsesarevich and Grand Duke Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov was born on 30th July 1904. His mother sometimes called him "Baby" or "Sunbeam." He was the fifth, the last and only son of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra. Everyone in the family was filled with joy when he was born because he was the long-waited-for heir and tsarevich. But, weeks after Alexei's birth they realized he had hemophilia, which is a disease that effects blood clotting (they discovered this when he started to bleed from the navel). He had 4 older sisters - Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Marie and Grand Duchess Anastasia. He was the favorite of the family, and his parents gave him everything he wanted. He had two sailors to watch him to make sure he wouldn't get hurt. Derevenko, who was a sailor in the Russian Navy, who later abandoned Alexei during the October revolution, and Nagorny who stayed with the family and was killed in Tobolsk after he tried to stop a guard from stealing a gold chain that was Alexei's. Even though he had his sailors, Alexei still got hurt sometimes. When he was eight years old, he almost died of a hemophiliac attack. He was in Spala on vacation with his family when he got an injury on his leg. He seemed to be recovering but the bleeding became worse and collected in his joints which caused immense pain, when his parents met Rasputin, a monk who was able to heal Alexei. By the next day, Alexei was starting to recover.
When his father abdicated, for himself and for Alexei, he and his family were prisoners of the Revolution, in Tobolsk. After that, Alexei's father, mother and sister Maria went to Ekaterinburg, leaving Alexei with his sisters. Eventually the siblings and some of their employees also went to Ekaterinburg. There the Romanovs lived in a place called "The House of Special Purpose." Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia all shared one room, while he, his father and mother shared another. On July 17, 1918 the Romanovs, their doctor, and others were set up in a basement in "The House of Special Purpose." Then, 11 executors entered and started firing. Alexei and his family and servants all died. Alexei was only 13 years old when he died. But, when they found the bodies of the Romanovs and their servants they realized there were two missing, Alexei and either Maria, Tatiana, or Anastasia. Recently the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia canonized the Romanovs as saints.
