Is America Stupid Enough to Elect Reality TV Stars?

15 July 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | From Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news

Randal Pinkett, the winner of the fourth season of The Apprentice, with Donald Trump. Photograph from NBC Universal. Generations from now, when historians look back on the beginning of the 21st century, they will surely watch the slew of reality television programs that have been produced in the last decade with a morbid fascination. They will cringe, they will wonder aloud why anyone ever cared whether Heidi and Spencer really were meant for each other, and then they will judge us. This is why it is particularly upsetting that Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey is reportedly considering tapping the winner of the fourth season of The Apprentice to be his running mate as lieutenant governor. Of course, the United States has had a good run. We’ve had our inspiring moments—think of the Wright brothers taking to the skies, Henry Ford inventing the Model T, or Neil Armstrong

Randal Pinkett: From 'Apprentice' To Lieutenant Governor?

14 July 2009 11:05 AM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

The Asbury Park Press is reporting that Randal Pinkett (the fourth — and sole African-American — winner of "The Apprentice") is about to get hired by another old guy with questionable hair. But this time, his boss will be New Jersey governor Jon Corzine. The gig is pretty major. If Randal gets chosen, he'll be Corzine's running mate later this fall.

You might scoff at a reality TV vet being in public office (I can hear my mom now: "What's next? Tila Tequila as secretary of state?"), but if I were a New Jersey resident, I'd probably vote for the guy because of his reality TV past.

Let's review Randal's "Apprentice" journey, shall we? (It as, after all, the ultimate job interview.)

Randal is not a quitter. In the first episode, he found out that his grandma died. Instead of leaving the show to grieve, he stayed so he could help his

Donald Trump Rips 'Third-rate' Kurt Andersen

13 July 2009 2:26 PM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

Kurt Andersen takes a cheap shot at Donald Trump in his new book -- and the developer is firing back. In "Reset," his take on the financial crisis, Andersen writes: "Who do you think enjoys life more, Donald Trump or Warren Buffett? They are both symbols of an era just ended, but one is a clownish reality-show artifact living the high life in Manhattan and Palm Beach, and the other a respected and beloved avatar who lives in a modest

Exclusive: Debbie Rowe In Her Own Words

12 July 2009 10:11 PM, PDT | From MTV Music News | See recent MTV Music News news

Read MTV News' complete interview with Michael Jackson's ex-wife, mother of Paris and Prince.

By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rebecca White

In early 2008, MTV News received a pitch from a writer named Rebecca White, who said she was good friends with Debbie Rowe, the mother of Michael Jackson's first two children (Michael Joseph Jr., a.k.a. Prince Michael, and Paris and his wife for more than three years. White said she had been invited to Rowe's horse ranch near Palmdale, California, and that Rowe was interested in doing an on-camera interview.

Obviously, we were interested in making it happen.

So, on April 6, we sent White and a crew to Rowe's ranch. To be honest, we didn't know what we'd find when we got there. Since divorcing from Jackson in 1999, Rowe had retreated to the dusty hills, having granted custody of the

Seth Green Appearing on 'WWE Raw' Monday Night

11 July 2009 1:02 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Seth Green will be the guest host of Monday night's WWE Raw on USA. That's right, the wrestling show. In typically hyperbolic fashion, WWE.com calls Green's gig "monumental" and "unprecedented," even though at one point, the now-defunct former rival of WWE, Ted Turner's WCW, had David Arquette briefly reign as its champion.

Now what does a guest host do on WWE Raw? Apparently, based on when Donald Trump ran the show, the guest host makes the matches, so Triple H may have to fight a guy whose entire ring persona is comprised of vowels and John Cena can...uh...not make movies. Really, he just announces the matches Vince McMahon orders, and the rest is a ratings ploy.

Even though pro wrestling isn't at its zenith anymore, Raw is still the most watched weekly cable show by a wide, wide margin and recently helped push USA to the

Fool Me Twice, Shame on Bruno

10 July 2009 8:57 AM, PDT | From Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news

At one point in Scream 2, a character lays out the rules for a successful horror sequel: “The body count must always be bigger,” and “the death scenes are much more elaborate, with more blood and gore.” The same imperative to top oneself applies to comedy sequels, too. Except that in the case of Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to his 2006 stunt-farce, Borat, “blood and gore” should be replaced with “cock and balls.” (Horror and comedy are structurally identical, the only difference being the type of instinctual response they’re designed to elicit from a crowd. It’s no accident comedians speak of “killing” or “slaying” an audience.) The challenge was particularly tough for Baron Cohen, whose raw comic material—gullible people—gets scarcer as he gets more famous. He’s expected to do more with less. When he first conquered America with Da Ali G Show, he was

Before ‘Brüno,’ There Was Ali G: Five Great Interviews From The Main Man

10 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

You already know Borat. You’re about to know Brüno. Some of us already know Brüno, perhaps a little too well in Eminem’s case. Did you know that there’s another famous Sacha Baron Cohen character lurking in the depths of pop culture’s murky waters? In his own words, I be talkin’ ’bout me main man, Ali G.

As portrayed by Cohen, the British “journalist” called Ali G is a lewd, disrespectful and typically unintelligent personality, showing up for interviews in his trademark attire: baggy clothes, skull cap, yellow sunglasses and various rings and chains. Still, the Cohen character managed to land one-on-ones with several high profile personalities in the entertainment industry, politics and other areas of life.

After some of those tense encounters, it’s truly no surprise that Cohen has had to retire the Ali G persona for good. Luckily, these moments live eternally in our

See Apple, Say Apple

30 June 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | From Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news

We finally finished watching No Direction Home: Bob Dylan the great documentary directed by Martin Scorsese that aired on PBS in 2005. Watching this film has been a multi-year project. I started watching it with my wife before she was my wife. The film looks back at Bob Dylan's life but it got me thinking about looking forward. There's an expression often heard in edit rooms: "See apple, say apple." It refers to the practice of having the narrator talk about something and then showing that very thing. If the narrator is talking about apples, then we have to show some apples. When you extend that "see apple" concept to the whole film, your work loses depth. Example: You do a show about Donald Trump firing people and all you get is a treatise about a gigantic, throbbing ego. Entertaining for...

Before this week, Time hadn't published a special commemorative issue (between regular issues) since right after September 11, 2001. So, what led the magazine to decide that Michael Jackson's life and death deserved the same attention as a major world event?

"I think because Michael had such a distinctive life. His fame was so much higher than other pop stars' fame," Time editor-at-large Belinda Luscombe told MTV News on Monday (June 29), when the issue hit newsstands. "Thriller was a huge best-seller. Secondly, he was young and it was really unexpected, and his life had been much, much loved and much talked about. Plus, it was a chance to write about his highs — which were very high — and his lows."

The issue examines Jackson's life, death and career,

WWE, USA Networks Could Face SEC Probe

22 June 2009 1:58 PM, PDT | From Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news

World Wrestling Entertainment and General Electric, the owner of USA Networks, could face an investigation by the SEC into their publicity stunt last week that likely caused WWE shares to fall 7 percent on Tuesday, Fox Business Network reported on Friday. The plunge in WWE shock occurred after WWE announced that it had sold its Raw TV franchise to Donald Trump. The following day, however, both WWE and USA apologized and acknowledged that no sale had taken place -- that it was all just a gimmick to publicize a new "story arc" for the wrestling show. But Randy Katz, a securities lawyer with Baker & Hostetler, told Fbn that an SEC probe "certainly is a possibility. ... The world today versus a couple of years ago has less tolerance for these types of issues. There's a greater likelihood today, than if this happened a few years ago."

Trump-McMahon Deal A Hoax, WWE Admits

19 June 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news

Demonstrating that there’s not much that can be believed in the wide world of wrestling, USA Network and Vince McMahon’s WWE acknowledged Thursday that an announcement that they had mutually released to the press last Tuesday saying that McMahon had sold Donald Trump his Raw franchise had no basis in fact. “We intended the release to be promotional for that ongoing story arc on the series. There is no such actual ‘sale,” the statement said. Neither the press, nor WWE investors, got the joke. A report of the sale was carried by numerous news outlets and spurred some WWE investors to sell their stock. Although Thursday’s statement ended with an apology “for any confusion,” a WWE spokesman sounded unapologetic when he told Daily Variety, “We do scripted entertainment.”

Jon Gosselin Apartment Hunting in New York?

Is Jon Gosselin already looking for a new home over a hundred miles away from his family's Pennsylvania estate? Sources tell "The Insider" that father of eight Jon is "looking at Trump Place," Donald Trump's luxury apartment buildings on the west side of Manhattan. Could this apartment hunt be related to the "life changing decisions" that will be announced on Monday's episode of Jon's family friendly Tlc reality show, "Jon & Kate Plus 8"? According to a promo, Jon and his wife of ten years, Kate, will make an announcement on the reality show's next episode that "will affect every member of [their] family." The promo -- which flashes phrases on the screen including: "A family in turmoil," "A relationship at a crossroads," and "Where do they go from here?" -- shows shots of Jon and Kate in a reflective mode and sometimes looking away from each other. WWE Admits Donald Trump Sale Just a Part of the Show

It seems that World Wrestling Entertainment has pulled the wool over the media's eyes. According to Variety, the announced sale of WWE Monday Night Raw to Donald Trump was all just part of a storyline to be played out on the highly-rated professional wrestling program.

The USA network, which airs the show, issued a press release on the sale on Monday and today the network issued a statement that the "sale" was part of a new storyline where WWE's CEO Vince McMahon, due to economic hardships, was forced to sell some of his assets, one of which being WWE Monday Night Raw to Trump.

"We intended the release to be promotional for that ongoing story arc on the series," USA said in the statement. "There is no such actual 'sale.' We apologize for any confusion."

Trump is still scheduled to appear on WWE Monday Night Raw as the new manager of the show,
