When the first American Made trailer debuted last month, it featured a number of scenes with Tom Cruise's character Barry Seal piloting a small aircraft, which he used to smuggle drugs in and out of the country. Today we have word from director Doug Liman that it was actually Tom Cruise in the cockpit for those scenes, flying the plane himself, while performing a number of other tasks that made this stunt even more dangerous than it looks. Here's what director Doug Liman had to say about this insane plane stunt in American Made.
"Flying extremely fast, small airplanes, low to the ground, is a dangerous environment to be in just on its own. Then, in the story, he's throwing bales of cocaine out of the airplane, loading them up with guns, so every once in a while in this scene he's got to climb out of the cockpit »
If you're eager to see Tom Cruise back piloting jets in the apparently happening Top Gun 2, you don't actually have to wait for that sequel to see him in action in the air again. The actor is behind the wheel of a small jet plane in the first trailer for American Made. This time he's not fighting MiGs, though, he's performing a different sort of duty for the Us of A. Watch the spot for the movie that reunites Cruise with his Edge of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman, below: When it comes out: September 29 Who is in it: Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, Jayma Mays, Lola Kirke, Connor Trinneer What it's about: Cruise plays real-life drug and arms smuggler Barry Seal, who also helped launder money...

"All this is legal?" "If you're doing it for the good guys..." Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for a film titled American Made, about a pilot recruited by the CIA to be a drug runner in the 1980s. Tom Cruise stars, and I guess I should say "taking him back to his Top Gun roots as a pilot" which is obvious, this time playing Barry Seal, telling his crazy stories as a skilled pilot. This looks pretty damn cool, and it's an intriguing follow-up for Cruise reuniting with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman again. The full cast includes Domhnall Gleeson in another unique role, plus Caleb Landry Jones, Jesse Plemons, Jayma Mays, Sarah Wright, Lola Kirke, Connor Trinneer, Alejandro Edda, Benito Martinez. This looks like a fun can't-believe-it's-real story, and Cruise seems to be enjoying himself as well. See below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Doug Liman's American Made, »
