SFotD: ‘Mama,’ the Short That Scared Guillermo Del Toro Into Making a Movie

31 December 2012 12:00 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Why Watch? This January, we’ll be able to see Andres Muschietti‘s Mama, which finds Nicolaj Coster-Waldau and a goth Jessica Chastain adopting two feral girls (trailer here). The feature makes this short film a prologue to a much larger story, but it’s not hard to imagine what scared producer Guillermo del Toro when he first laid eyes on this gripping three minutes. Simplicity itself, the script for Mama was probably less than a page, but the combination of screaming children, little feet running away in terror, groaning string music, camera work that seems to contort the space its in, and a jerking murder of humanity is more than enough to fray nerves. The 2008 short gets an improved presentation here, complete with an introduction from del Toro. [Aint it Cool] What will it cost you? Only 3 minutes. Skip work. Watch more short films. »

New 'Pacific Rim' Still Displays A Clear Difference in Standing

Clearly.

Pacific Rim is one of those big budget films that you almost can't believe are real when they're announced but you flock to see it in the theatres.  Simply put, the film has the goods to sell seats.  Everything a movie goer could want: robots, Guillermo del Toro, giant alien monsters, Idris Elba, and the list goes on.  We've already seen one teaser of the destructive awe that is to come, but stills have been trickling in steadily to continually pique interests. »

January 2013 Movie Wallpaper: 'Texas Chainsaw 3D'

31 December 2012 7:39 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It's interesting my October wallpaper was Cloud Atlas and now, with January 2013 comes a horror-inspired wallpaper in a month that begins with Texas Chainsaw 3D, continues with the horror parody A Haunted House, follows that up with the Guillermo del Toro-produced Mama and finishes the month off with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and the limited release of John Dies at the End. So who am I to ignore the trend? Apparently January has become the new October as studios look to offer alternatives to the awards season features still in theaters. Just like previous wallpapers, this month's includes a few limited releases noted with an * and I've place a ? next to Zero Dark Thirty which will release wide on January 11 after a small expansion on January 4. The downloads are available in sizes that will fit both widescreen and full screen monitors and they are available only to logged in and registered users. »

If 2012 Were A Movie…

31 December 2012 2:04 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Having already worked to adapt last year’s release schedule for the big screen — you can thank me when you run out of board games, Hollywood — I thought I’d try to do the same with 2012. After all, we’re all about franchises here, particularly those with some semblance of name recognition.

If 2012 were a movie it would be unable to shy from the Olympics, Curiosity’s arrival on Mars or the fact that the world didn’t end. It would feature a British enquiry, an American election and Austrian jumping out of a hot air balloon. Not to mention a naked prince, the God particle and Gangnam style.

If 2012 were a movie it would also reflect the year in film. It would be a 50th anniversary re-release of a stop-motion reboot. It would be a team-up movie, a mega-franchise starring Snow White, Alfred Hitchcock and Taylor Kitsch. The rights would be bought by Disney. »

New ‘Pacific Rim’ Still Features Idris Elba in Command

30 December 2012 10:15 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Love it or hate it, it seems everyone has an opinion when it comes to Pacific Rim, the monsters versus robots adventure hitting theaters next summer from director Guillermo del Toro. Ever since the first footage of the film was unveiled at Comic-Con this past summer, speculation about Pacific Rim – and the unique style that del Toro plans to implement in the onscreen chaos – has run rampant, reaching a fever pitch with the recent release of the trailer.

According to the official plot synopsis, Charlie Hunnam (TV’s Sons of Anarchy) and Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) lead the cast as the two unlikely souls on whom the fate of the world depends. Idris Elba (Thor, Prometheus) also appears as Lieutenant-Commander Stacker Pentecost, commanding officer of Hunnam’s character.

Now, thanks to Emile Eid, we ...

Special Features - The Future of Guillermo del Toro

David Bishop sorts through the multitude of projects on Guillermo del Toro's upcoming slate to see which ones have a shot at reaching the screen...

Visionary director / producer / writer / filmmaking machine Guillermo del Toro has about a million projects on the go. It seems his name is never far away when a major new franchise rears its head, on top of the ridiculous amount of self-starting projects he seems to announce on an almost daily basis. So, with the recent release of the (mind-blowing) Pacific Rim trailer, it seems a good time to get things straight and find out what’s concrete, what’s a possibility and what’s just wishful thinking.

The Hobbit – “But he’s no longer involved you complete moron.” I hear you cry. Well indeed, but such was his involvement that he still got a co-writer credit for his troubles. Whether his influence will be »
