Earlier today, we reported that Legendary and Universal Pictures have set a February 23, 2018 release date for Pacific Rim 2. The news came just a few weeks after Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout star John Boyega signed on for a leading role, portraying the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost from the first Pacific Rim. Now we have yet another report which claims the studios are eyeing Suicide Squad star Scott Eastwood for an unspecified role.
Deadline reports that Scott Eastwood is in early talks for the action sequel, which has recently been given a new lease on life after it was indefinitely delayed last fall. Unfortunately, it wasn't revealed who Scott Eastwood is playing, or if this character has any connections to the characters from the original Pacific Rim. This new report reveals that production is being eyed to start late this year, although it isn't clear where shooting will take place. »
Earlier this month, we learned that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega would star and co-produce Legendary Pictures' upcoming sequel to their 2013 surprise hit Pacific Rim and today, we've received word that they're close to adding another key piece to the cast. Deadline is reporting that Scott Eastwood has entered early negotiations to join the cast. Details on his part were unavailable, but the trade adds that the role in question is considered to be major, likely the co-lead alongside Boyega, whose character is the son of the character played by Idris Elba (Star Trek Beyond) in the original Guillermo del Toro-directed film. Eastwood is an up-and-comer, and already has quite a few high-profile films lined up for next two years, including Oliver Stone's Snowden, David Ayer's Suicide Squad, F. Gary Gray's Fast 8, and Ben Affleck's Live By Night. Additionally, earlier today, »

Production was originally supposed to begin last year on Pacific Rim 2, but that didn't exactly work out as planned. After a slew of different rumors started circulating, it was revealed that Pacific Rim 2 would be indefinitely delayed, with the sequel pulled out of its August 4, 2017 release date. The project finally started to move in the right direction this year, with the additions of director Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil), writer Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) and, earlier this month, John Boyega in the leading role. Today we have word that Universal has officially handed out a February 23, 2018 release date for this upcoming sequel.
Deadline reports that Pacific Rim 2 currently has the February 23, 2018 release date to itself, with 20th Century Fox's Larrikins opening one week earlier on February 16, 2018, and Warner Bros.' Meg opening the week after on March 2. With the release date now in place, it remains to be seen when production will actually begin, »
While the first Pacific Rim underperformed at the North American box office, the Guillermo Del Toro-directed kaiju film did great business overseas, finishing with a global total of $411 million on a $190 million budget. Nearly 30 percent of that amount came from China alone, where it grossed $114 million -- $13 million more than it netted in the North American market. So, in summary: if you liked the first Pacific Rim, you have China to thank for Pacific Rim 2, which now has a release date of February 23, 2018. Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout John Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s character in the sequel, while Steven S. DeKnight is slated to handle directing duties this time around (Del Toro is on board as a producer). While February isn’t traditionally viewed as blockbuster-friendly territory, Pacific Rim 2 is set to debut in a heated marketplace, with Marvel’s Black Panther »

From the casting announcements so far, neither actor is scheduled to return. But a thread to Elba’s character remains, as The Force Awakens‘ John Boyega recently signed on to lead the franchise into the future as Stacker Pentecost’s son.

The recent woes of DreamWorks Animation have been well documented over the past couple of years. Poor box office returns for originals like “Turbo” and “Mr. Peabody and Sherman,” as well as underperforming “How To Train Your Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda” sequels, have resulted in a studio in crisis (confirmed further by its recent Comcast acquisition), but if anything can turn its fortunes around, it’s got to be an eye-popping musical extravaganza.
That’s where “Trolls” fits in, the new animated film from co-directors Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn based on those wildly popular toys by Thomas Dam. Headed up by the voice talents of Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Russell Brand, James Corden and more, the film follows two trolls — the always-energetic Poppy and the more pessimistic Branch — as they team up on a quest »

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” first premiered in 2006 to widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. Set in Spain five years after the Spanish Civil War, the film follows a young girl (Ivana Baquero) who escapes from her sadistic, fascist stepfather (Sergi López) into a fantasy world where she comes to believe that she’s the reincarnation of an underworld princess. The film had its world premiere at Cannes where it received a 22-minute standing ovation. It later went on to win three Oscars, including Best Cinematography. Now according to del Toro himself, the film will receive a Criterion release this fall, and he’s already shared the cover art, designed by Becky Cloonan, on Twitter.
