Evangeline Lilly discusses Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

2 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

When we return to Middle-earth later this year for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, we'll be seeing a few new additions to the cast of Peter Jackson's three-part prequel to The Lord of the Rings - not least the Elves of Mirkwood, including the returning LotR star Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Evangeline Lilly (Lost) as Tauriel, the head of King Thranduil's (Lee Pace) Elvin guard. Speaking to Total Film, the actress has offered some details about what we can expect from the character, who does not appear in J.R.R. Tolkien's book and has instead been created by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh specifically for the film.

"She’s a very, very young elf, she’s only 600 years old, unlike Legolas who’s like, 1,900 years old and Thranduil who’s about 3,000 years old.  She doesn’t have quite the wisdom and pose that those two boys do; she’s a little more. »

Journey Into ‘A Field In England’ With This New Poster and Trailer

21 May 2013 8:23 AM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote that “not all who wander are lost.”  I think it’s safe to assume though that the men in Ben Wheatley’s new film are indeed lost in more ways than once.  A Field in England looks to be a hallucinogenic, historical, road trip of sorts from the director who previously gave us Kill List and the recently streaming Sightseers.  Between the stark black and white photography and images of dirty, brawny warriors losing their mind, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising.  Given the man behind the camera, I’m still curious about A Field In England, even though I get the sense I’ve tasted these psychedelic mushrooms before.  Drafthouse Pictures will release the film in the states later this year. Check out the trailer and poster below.

Game of Thrones review: Season 3, Episode 6

18 May 2013 3:52 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Based largely off of the first half of George R.R. Martin’s behemoth of a book, A Storm of Swords (which is longer than the entirety of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy!), the third season of HBO’s Game of Thrones brings all of the plot lines, character beats, and thematic developments from the first two years to a climatic head.

And as the show’s lingering questions are answered and bombshell revelations are dropped, this column (It Is Known: An Analysis of Thrones) will help wade viewers and book-lovers both through the narrative overload that will be at hand.  What it won’t do, however, is spoil the story; the hope and intent is elucidation, not ruination.

Given the death, destruction, and – gasp – hope that await in the next five episodes, such illumination will be needed.

The Best Way to Memorize All the Characters from 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit'

6 May 2013 4:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

click image to enlarge Chemical engineering student Emil Johansson happens to be a huge J.R.R. Tolkien geek. He previously created a Lord of the Rings family tree, a Middle-earth problem-solving chart, and a timeline of the One Ring. His latest project involves something that hits a little bit closer to home: a period table of Middle-earth. Johansson categorized 114 Tolkien characters (from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) and assigned them a number, symbol, birth and death dates, and other pertinent info. It's a beautifully designed chart, which you can also purchase before the next installment of The Hobbit hits theaters in December. We'd also like to point out how Elven Johansson looks. Pay attention Peter Jackson, and cast him in something Asap...

Tolkien-loving heart as Bard the Bowman in the next two Hobbit films, eventually he’ll sink his teeth into your movie-going neck as the lead in Dracula Year Zero, and now he’s going to fly back from the afterlife in the new The Crow reboot. Deadline Hollywood (via ComingSoon) reports that the in-demand Evans is currently in negotiations for the lead role in F. Thunder Road Looking To Slay Dragons With ‘Valkyries’ Pitch Pact

2 May 2013 2:47 PM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Exclusive: Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road has acquired Valkyries, a pitch by scribe Nick Schoenfeld for a large-scale fantasy film based on the Norse hero Sigurd. Thunder Road made the deal in partnership with Christian Angemayer’s Filmhaus Germany. Most famously recounted in the 13th century Volsunga saga and the four-part opera by Richard Wagner, Sigurd’s feature will be drawn about his recruitment to slay the monstrous dragon Fafnir to ward off a generations-long curse. Sigurd’s exploits were also chronicled by The Hobbit author J.R.R. Tolkien. Schoenfeld, who just scripted Attila for Warner Bros, here pitched a take that blends the traditional dragon-hunting plot with an original thread involving a fallen daughter of Odin (called Valkyries) and her desire to retake a place in the heavens. Iwanyk bought the pitch out of the new funding that he set up through deals with Italia Films and China-based Fundamental Films »

Willie Nelson to Peter Jackson: Pass Me That Halfling Leaf

30 April 2013 8:44 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Willie Nelson is famous for two things: Being one of the greatest country musicians ever and being one of the greatest proponents of weed ever. Meanwhile, Gandalf the Grey is also famous for two things: Saving Middle-earth from the evil of Sauron and enjoying the halfling leaf far too much.

So it only makes sense that, as this new video from Team Coco shows, Nelson wants to replace Ian McKellen as Gandalf in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."

Not that Willie is going to make a big deal about it, of course. After all, he's far too mellow for that. But since he does feel such a strong bond with J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary wizard, Nelson did put together this impressive audition reel to show director Peter Jackson just what the red headed stranger can bring to the table.

And as for McKellen, well, as Nelson himself puts it, »

Viggo Mortensen Still Hopeful For A Return As Aragorn In The Hobbit Trilogy

13 April 2013 5:26 PM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

It's fair to say that Aragorn was easily one of the most popular characters in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and with many of the actors from that series returning for Peter Jackson's take on The Hobbit, it seems like a missed opportunity not to bring him back too. The main problem is of course the fact that the character simply didn't appear in that story! However, as Jackson made the decision to turn his adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel into a trilogy, the possibility of a return for Aragorn thereby seems far more likely. Here's what actor Viggo Mortensen had to say about exactly that in a recent interview with Total Film Magazine. "Would I play Aragorn again? Sure, if it seemed sensible to do so. He's not in the book of The Hobbit but if they're working with the appendices they may be intending to »

Americans have embraced this world of kings and dragons in much the same way J.R.R. Tolkien's Fantasy series "The Lord of the Rings" has been loved since being released in the U.S. in the 1960s. Fantasy series like Tolkien's have become ingrained in American culture. The characters of Fantasy books are well known, even to those who never read the »

DVD Review: 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'

8 April 2013 5:03 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★☆☆☆ Over ten years since he journeyed deep into J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson makes his inevitable return to Middle-earth with the first of a new three-parter: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012). Taking the reins from original helmer Guillermo Del Toro, Jackson takes the source material - itself a prelude to TLotR - and burrows further into the templates he so vividly brought to life three times previously, fleshing out the established geography and characters whilst retrospectively exploring Bilbo Baggins' adventures pre-The Fellowship of the Ring.

Upon its initial release last December, Peter Jackson’s long awaited adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Other classic book was met with a somewhat lukewarm response. Had ten years worth of heavy expectation ensured the movie would not reach the heights of it’s predecessors, no matter how good it was? Or is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey merely an overlong exercise in fan-pleasing, money squeezing Hollywood exploitation to the nth degree?

Well, no. It’s actually not. Because The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is terrific fantasy cinema at the very top of its game. Whilst it’s no Fellowship Of The Ring (which still stands triumphantly as the best Jackson/Tolkien adaptation »
