The Pros and Cons of Studying From a Working Actor

3 October 2011 12:54 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Deciding which teacher to study with can be daunting. Some actors try to narrow their search by saying things like "I want to study with a female acting teacher" or "I want to study with someone who teaches this specific method." But should whether or not a teacher is a working actor affect your decision to study with him or her?The Advantages of Studying With Teachers Who ActThe obvious advantage to studying with teachers who are working actors is that they understand today's challenges. They know what you are going through with your agent, manager, auditions, callbacks, and bookings. They can share with you things that have happened to them in the audition room, on set, or onstage.Teachers who are working actors can give you real-world examples of how what they teach can apply and why what they're teaching is applicable to you as an actor. Votd: My Grandfather’s Watch, by Stephen Tobolowsky

9 September 2011 12:00 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The great Stephen Tobolowsky was recently in Maine for a much-deserved break. On his way back, he decided to stop by my neck of the woods in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We hung out and talked about the future of The Tobolowsky Files [1]. But I also couldn't resist the opportunity to use one of my new DSLRs to film Stephen telling a story. After the jump, see the result of our video experiment, in which Stephen tells a poignant story about his grandfather's watch, and about how we all remember our grandparents. The following was shot using a Canon 5D Mark 2 in Stephen's hotel room using only natural lighting. It's a little bit overexposed and the focus isn't great; I'm still getting the hang of how to use this thing. Nonetheless, I think the story, and Stephen's ability to tell it, still shines through: [1] http://www.tobolowskyfiles.com »

Blu-Ray Review: Unfunny ‘Peep World’ Wastes Spectacular Comedic Cast

21 July 2011 8:11 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Peep World” plays like the pilot for a failed sitcom that will never end. The running time clocks in at a mere 79 minutes, but the ordeal feels so much longer. One can imagine the canned laughter on TV Land appreciating these gags, which are embarrassingly lame. It’s not long before the miserable, ashen-faced characters begin to mirror the audience.

What’s astounding is the sheer level of comedic talent that has somehow been assembled for this mess. Rainn Wilson, Sarah Silverman, Judy Greer, Ben Schwartz and Stephen Tobolowsky have far better things to do than waste time with this dreck. Were they really dying to work with director Barry W. Blaustein, whose last comedy was 2005’s offensive Special Olympics satire, “The Ringer”? Or were they swayed by the utterly humorless script by Peter Himmelstein, best known for doing the title design in “Slums of Beverly Hills”?

Sarah Silverman made the podcast rounds a while back to talk up The Bedwetter, her bestselling memoir, and Peep World, an ensemble comedy-drama in which she co-starred. The latter project radiated promise. Beyond a cast that included Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson, Judy Greer, Ron Rifkin, Taraji P. Henson, Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio on Parks And Recreation), Kate Mara, Alicia Witt, Lesley Ann Warren, and Stephen Tobolowsky, Peep World promised a much-buzzed-about Silverman nude scene, which seems to have ended up on the cutting-room floor.
