Joel was born into a theatrical family, his mother Liddy Holloway was a well known television and stage actress in New Zealand. From a very early age Joel was surrounded by the goings on of the theater. He would accompany his mother to work and along the way acquired lots of 'uncles' and 'aunties' who were happy to look after him in the Green Room him while his mother was on stage.

At age 5 the inevitable happened, and Joel was cast alongside Liddy in the Mercury Theatre's production of 'The Dutchess of Malfi'.

The rest is history...
