Anthony Mackie and Kian Lawley join The Hate U Give

Deadline is reporting that Anthony Mackie (Detroit) and Kian Lawley (Before I Fall) have signed on to the cast of The Hate U Give, a new drama from Fox 2000, which is based upon Angela Thomas’ bestselling novel.

The film is being directed by George Tillman Jr. (Men Of Honor), and stars Amandla Stenberg stars as Starr Carter, who is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.

Also featuring in the cast of The Hate U Give are Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, Sabrina Carpenter, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common. Filming is now underway in Atlanta.

Castings

Alec Baldwin has signed on to play John DeLorean in a series of scripted scenes that will be added to Xyz Films’ untitled documentary about Delorean, Variety has learned exclusively.

Supporting roles for the narrative scenes are currently being cast. Baldwin’s hair and makeup team from “Saturday Night Live” have also been enlisted to transform him into Delorean.

The film is directed by Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce. Producers are Tamir Ardon, Xyz Films, and 9.14 Pictures. Ingenious is backing the project. Production is currently under way, with the narrative scenes to be shot shortly.

‘Insecure’ Star Issa Rae Joins Drama ‘The Hate U Give’ (Exclusive)
Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae has joined Fox 2000’s coming-of-age drama “The Hate U Give” opposite Amandla Stenberg, Variety has learned exclusively.

George Tillman Jr. is directing from Audrey Wells’ script, adapted from Angela Thomas’ debut novel of the same name.

Additional cast members include Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common. Rae will play April, the activist that helps Stenberg’s character find her voice and speak up.

Louis Cordice and Jared Harris have joined the cast of Magnificent Films’ upcoming boxing drama “Michael,” based on the story of Michael Watson, Variety has learned exclusively.

Cordice, who appeared in the final three “Harry Potter” movies, will be playing the title character and Harris will portray neurosurgeon Peter Hamlyn. Watson suffered a near-fatal injury during a loss to Chris Eubank for the World Boxing Organization super-middleweight title in 1991.

The film will also highlight the changes that resulted in ringside medical care as a result of Watson’s injuries, his court battle with the British Board of Boxing Control, his triumph over adversity, and journey to run the London Marathon.

Demian Bichir has joined Lionsgate’s science-fiction adventure “Chaos Walking,” starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley.

Doug Liman is directing while Allison Shearmur and Doug Davison are producers. The screenplay will be written by Patrick Ness, Charlie Kaufman and John Lee Hancock.

The film is based on Patrick Ness’s “Chaos Walking: The Knife of Never Letting Go,” a book that was published in 2008 as the first in a trilogy. It’s set in a dystopian world where all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts with Holland’s character playing the only boy in a town of men who’s forced to flee with only his dog.

Bichir will play the father of Holland’s character. Lionsgate has set a March 1, 2019, release date.

The Hunger Games” actress Amandla Stenberg will star in Fox 2000’s “The Hate U Give,” based on the upcoming debut novel from Angela Thomas.

Wyck Godfrey and Mary Bowen’s Temple Hill and State Street are producing “The Hate U Give.” George Tillman Jr. will direct from a script by Audrey Wells.

Thomas’ story follows a 16-year-old who attends a suburban prep school and must deal with the aftermath of witnessing a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend. When she is called to testify in court, she has to face the consequences of what she does or doesn’t say.

Thomas began working on the book as a short story while a senior at Belhaven University. She was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2009 fatal shooting of Oscar Grant, an unarmed 22-year-old black man in Oakland, Calif. — which was recounted in the 2013 movie “Fruitvale Station.”

I think this might be the first movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel that I haven’t hated. Oh, sure, it’s set in an American South — specifically, North Carolina — where there are, impossibly, no black people (see also: Safe Haven), and where it only ever rains as an expression of manly sadness that cannot be articulated in any other way. It uses a motif similar to The Notebook’s, in which romantic handwritten documents of a relationship — in this case, love letters — allow for flashbacks to the 1940s,

There are variables in the chemistry of a Nicholas Sparks film, but the basic formula has seldom changed through films like The Notebook, Dear John and The Lucky One. Even the posters for these movies often look indistinguishable from one another, except for the two actors pictured. The Longest Ride is the tenth Sparks adaptation to hit the big screen and though it sticks to what you'll know if you've seen more than one of the others, it's not necessarily a formula that's in need of fixing.
