He acted in Arthur Miller's play, "A View from the Bridge," at the Young Vic Theatre in London, England with Annie Ross, David Hargreaves, and Clive Russell in the cast.

He studied design at the Manchester School of Art. While working as a textile designer and printmaker, he became interested in amateur theater. He received a scholarship to a drama school in Kent, and landed his first acting job in 1962 at Bernard Miles's Mermaid theater in London.
