He acted in Margaret Edson's play, "W;T," at the Vaudeville Theatre in London, England with Kathleen Chalfant, Jaye Griffiths, Ed Stoppard, and Irene Sutcliffe in the cast.

He studied design at the Manchester School of Art. While working as a textile designer and printmaker, he became interested in amateur theater. He received a scholarship to a drama school in Kent, and landed his first acting job in 1962 at Bernard Miles's Mermaid theater in London.
