‘Anne with an E’ Review: A ‘Breaking Bad’ Producer Updates ‘Anne of Green Gables’ for Our Darker Times

12 May 2017 8:18 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Once Netflix decided to change the title of its “Anne of Green Gables” reboot from plain old “Anne” (ugh!) to “Anne with an E,” it proved itself to be a true “kindred spirit” to the poor literary orphan girl.

The beloved character from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Canadian children’s novel “Anne of Green Gables,” on which the series is based, insists upon that particular spelling of her name because of its elegance. That insistence is also indicative of Anne Shirley’s boisterous personality, which demands that she be heard, that people pay attention, that she is special. Fortunately, Netflix listened and along with settling on a fitting title, the streaming service has also crafted a unique adaptation that is simultaneously faithful to the source material in appearance and story, while expanding the story to comment upon the ills of 1900s rural Canadian society. TV Review: ‘Anne With an E,’ Based on the Book ‘Anne of Green Gables’

11 May 2017 4:32 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Anne With an E,” like its protagonist, is fond of a little sweeping romance. The opening frames of the first episode of Netflix’s next offering depict Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thompson) astride a galloping horse, racing across a gorgeous and remote landscape of seaside meadows and flowering cherry trees. It’s a distinctly more dashing interpretation of Matthew than who he is in L.M. Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables,” in which the never-married Matthew is an old, shy man — reticent to a fault, afraid of women, and terrified of conflict. He would be surprised to learn that in “Anne With an E,” he cuts quite a heroic figure as he rushes through the pastoral landscape of Prince Edward Island.

But perhaps “Anne With an E” is showing us the world a little less than it is and a little bit more as 13-year-old redheaded orphan Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty) would want it to be: more “romantical »

Let’s Go to Green Gables with the New Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Anne’

7 April 2017 9:42 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It’s a feminist re-imagining in Netflix’s latest series.

Last Tuesday, Netflix released the first full-length trailer for their new series, Anne. Working with Canadian network CBC, the eight-episode series is an adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s early 20th century novel Anne of Green Gables. However, don’t expect this to be a word-to-screen adaptation; Anne’s showrunner and writer Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad) has said in a statement that she “wanted to chart some new territory,” admitting that the series “is not a period piece with a glossy veneer.”

For those unfamiliar with the novel off of which Anne is based, Montgomery’s work begins with the two siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, played R. H. Thomson and Geraldine James in the series, who decide to adopt an orphan boy to help them with their farm, Green Gables, in the fictional town of Avonlea that’s located in Prince Edward Island, Canada »

Trailer Watch: “Anne” Can Do Anything a Boy Can Do and More

5 April 2017 7:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Amybeth McNulty in “Anne”

“My name is Anne Shirley Cuthbert, and please be sure to spell ‘Anne’ with an ‘e’,” the heroine of Netflix’s newest series requests on her first day at a new school. Even if you’ve never heard of “Anne of Green Gables” before, that one line tells you all you need to know about the outspoken, self-assured protagonist.

Based on L.M. Montgomery’s classic series of novels, “Anne” follows the imaginative and adventurous Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty), a young orphan, as she arrives at Prince Edward Island near the turn of the century. “After an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, [Anne] is mistakenly sent to live with an aging sister and brother,” the official synopsis reads. “Over time, 13-year-old Anne will transform the lives of Marilla (Geraldine James) and Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thomson) and eventually the entire small town in which they live with her unique spirit, fierce intellect, and brilliant imagination. Anne’s adventures will reflect timeless and topical issues including themes of identity, feminism, bullying, and prejudice.”

The new spot for “Anne” touches on these themes as we see the main character humiliated when a classmate tells her, “I won’t eat next to dirty trash.” But Anne can handle herself: The trailer also shows her arguing with Marilla that “girls can do anything a boy can do and more,” and smacking classmate Gilbert (“20th Century Women’s” Lucas Jade Zumann) across the face with a book after he pulls her hair.

Emmy-winner Moira Walley-Beckett (“Breaking Bad”) is “Anne’s” showrunner. She penned every episode and serves as exec producer alongside Miranda de Pencier (“Beginners”).

Niki Caro helmed the first episode of the series, while Sandra Goldbacher (“Me Without You”), Helen Shaver (“Orphan Black”), Patricia Rozema (“Into the Forest”), and Amanda Tapping (“Supernatural”) are among the series’ other directors.

“Anne” premieres on Netflix May 12.
