Younger sister of Emma Thompson. Consequently she is the sister-in-law of Greg Wise, and the former sister-in-law of Kenneth Branagh.

Daughter of stage director Eric Thompson and Phyllida Law.

Has two sons: Ernie James (b. 1997) and Walter Eric (b. 2000).

She was awarded the 1999 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in "Into the Woods".

Both Sophie and her sister, Emma Thompson, met their future husbands (Greg Wise and Richard Lumsden, respectively) on the set of Sense and Sensibility (1995).

She and her sister Emma Thompson, as well as her former brother-in-law Kenneth Branagh, have all appeared in the Harry Potter films. Also appearing is Helena Bonham Carter, who played Emma's sister in Howards End (1992).
