Barbershop: The Next Cut (a.k.a. Barbershop: A Fresh Cut) (2016)

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee

Starring Ice Cube, Robert Teitel, Cedric the Entertainer, Regina Hall, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve, Anthony Anderson, Jazsmin Lewis-Kelley, Common, Nicki Minaj, Margot Bingham, Lamorne Morris, Deon Cole, Reggie Brown, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Tyga, J.B. Smoove, Deon Cole

Synopsis

Employees at the barbershop look to solve the gang-related violence that has taken its hold on the local community.

It’s been 12 years since the last outing of the Barbershop franchise (11 if you want to include its spin-off), and it’s nice to see many of them return as well as the arrival of some new faces. As these films have gained greater recognition and a growing fan-base over years, one glaring concern would be that of quality: could they recapture the magic and chemistry given the time-lapse? Could the director of Scary Movie 5 live up to such standards? »

It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. Calvin (Ice Cube) and his longtime crew, including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes. Most noticeably, our once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies bring their own flavor, drama and gossip to the shop challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop, the surrounding community »

Film Review: ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’ Does Their Take on ‘Chi-Raq’

17 April 2016 8:10 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The Barbershop series of films have always prided themselves on following the “Seinfeld Rule” – they are essentially about nothing. But with this go-around – like the recent “Chi-Raq” – the gang at the shop takes on the Chicago neighborhood violence around them, in “Barbershop: The Next Cut.”

Rating: 3.5/5.0

It’s still light hearted fare, and Cedric the Entertainer is still the one man Greek Chorus as Eddie, but like many neighborhoods in Chicago, the fictional south side environs of the barbershop are facing up to the wild west-style shootings that seem to happen on a nightly basis. Through this serious subject, they try to work it out and actually do something for their people. It’s a lot more noble, and it’s effectively woven (pun intended) into the Barbershop series zeitgeist.

Calvin (Ice Cube) is still running his south side barbershop, with the usual hustlers, hangers-on and regular customers. His »

Disney’s “The Jungle Book” is aiming for an impressive $80 million opening weekend at 4,028 U.S. stites, early estimates showed Friday.

Should the forecast hold, “The Jungle Book” will notch the third-highest opening weekend of 2016 after “Batman v Superman” at $166 million and “Deadpool” at $132.4 million.

Film Review: Barbershop: The Next Cut

14 April 2016 1:59 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

I'll behave in school now

To survive harsh economic times, Calvin and Angie have merged the barbershop and beauty salon into one business. The days of male bonding are gone as Eddie and the crew must now contend with sassy female co-workers and spirited clientele. As the battle of the sexes rages on, a different kind of conflict has taken over Chicago. Crime and gangs are on the rise, leaving Calvin worried about the fate of his son. Together, the friends come up with a bold plan to take back their beloved neighborhood.

So, why bring back the Barbershop franchise after all this time? Perhaps Ice Cube felt we just needed another visit with some familiar faces and a few new friends. Fortunately, the reason appears to be brimming with a lot more meaning. Without having spoken to Mr. Cube, it would appear that this film is a vehicle to »

‘Jungle Book’ to Rule Box Office Kingdom With $70 Million Opening

12 April 2016 5:23 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney’s “The Jungle Book” will dominate the U.S. box office this weekend, opening in the $70 million range while “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” continues its fast fade at multiplexes.

The live-action-cg hybrid, directed by Jon Favreau, is launching at 4,028 domestic venues with critics having embraced the movie with some of the best reviews of the year for a studio production. It currently has a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney is so confident about the impending success of the family film — which carries a $175 million budget — that it’s already started developing a sequel. The studio is in talks with Favreau, screenwriter Justin Marks and producer Brigham Taylor to return.

Should “The Jungle Book” hit $75 million, it would match Disney’s animated hit “Zootopia” for the third-best opening of the year after “Batman v Superman” at $166 million and “Deadpool” at $132.4 million.

Film Review: ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’

12 April 2016 5:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After all the other long-deferred sequels that have come and gone this year (“Zoolander 2,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Snore of Destiny” or whatever), “Barbershop: The Next Cut” can’t help but feel like a model of form, durability and purpose. That’s not bad for what is essentially a serving of warmed-over cinematic comfort food — then again, comfort may be the wrong word in light of all the violence erupting outside this longtime Chicago neighborhood hangout, the bullets flying almost as quickly as the ever-spirited verbal volleys hurled by Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and a fresh cast of coed cutters and stylists. Blending real-world topicality and battle-of-the-sexes playfulness in a way that may remind some of Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq,” but in a much more familiar and crowd-pleasing franchise mold, this overly earnest but not-unwelcome third entry should land in the same double-digit domestic B. »

Will 'The Jungle Book' Be Another Big Box Office Win for Disney?

12 April 2016 9:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Batman v Superman's two-week run atop the box office came to an end last weekend as Universal's new comedy The Boss just barely beat it with $23.5 million. Unfortunately for The Boss, its reign looks to be quite short, with three newcomers hitting theaters this Friday, including Disney's highly-anticipated The Jungle Book, Warner Bros.' Barbershop: The Next Cut and Lionsgate's Criminal. According to the predictions from ToddMThatcher.com, The Jungle Book is looking to run away with a huge opening weekend win.

The Jungle Book is eyeing a debut of $74.6 million, as Barbershop: The Next Cut debuts in second with $23.1 million. Both The Boss ($13.5 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($11.1 million) will likely drop to third and fourth place, respectively, with Criminal rounding out the top 5 with $9.3 million. The Jungle Book has a huge edge over its competitors in terms of theater count and critical acclaim.

Ice Cube, Common on How ‘Barber Shop: The Next Cut’ Tackles Gang Violence

7 April 2016 7:23 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ice Cube was in a reflective mood Wednesday night at the world premiere of MGM-New Line’s “Barber Shop: The Next Cut” — a dozen years after “Barber Shop 2: Back in Business.”

He admitted that the third film in the comedy franchise addresses the far more serious issue of gang violence along with the usual barber-shop banter.

“We wanted to deal with the real situation on the South Side of Chicago,” Cube said as he introduced the film at the Tcl Chinese Theatre.

Common, who plays one of the barbers, echoed that sentiment on the red carpet, saying, “I’m from Chicago, and this movie is really relevant to what’s going on.”

Screenwriters Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver said it was crucial to find a way to reflect the current crisis, but have still make the jokes land.
