American screenwriter, in Hollywood from 1916, initially with Lasky. Prolific during the silent era, he was signed by Warner Brothers in 1929, where he worked on their classic gangster film The Public Enemy (1931). He left Warners in 1932 and free-lanced for RKO, MGM and Paramount for another four years.
