2010 movie preview: 15 films you probably didn’t know you should be excited for

29 December 2009 9:37 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

A few days back John made the rather excellent list of 15 films that are sure to get audience’s pulses racing with anticipation for next year. Yet away from the marketing hype, pre-release publicity and away from the A-List names there are a slew of movies that, whilst not overly commercially minded, look like they may just be delightful. Some might be sleeper hits, some might not. Either way here is a list of 15 films, five each from the U.S., Asia and Europe, you may not have heard of to look out for next year:

The United States

The Fighter

Perhaps tainted by Christian Bale’s lost lustre or director David O. Russell’s reputation, The Fighter is receiving much less attention than I initially envisioned. Mark Wahlberg is to star in the lead role of professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward with Bale as his half brother. The Fighter »

Geeky Film Marketing: An 'American Psycho' Billboard

29 December 2009 7:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

From Horror Squad

Reasons I'd move to New Zealand: ridiculously beautiful landscape, sheep, the Thompson Twins and this awesome American Psycho billboard TV2 erected for an upcoming TV airing of Mary Harron's film.

Ads of the World posted this picture advertising the Bret Easton Ellis adaptation starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman and Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Justin Theroux, Bill Sage, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Willem Dafoe, and Samantha Mathis. The billboard takes on the classic business card scene:

"The Perfect Billboard. Eggshell white with romalian type. Nice. Raised lettering, a subtle 7 inch bone border, and just look at the tasteful thickness of the headline. All perched on four evenly spaced 3.2 metre powder coated stanchions. My god, it even has a watermark."

Clever work on some film geek's part. I hope people will actually take the time to read the damn thing. Pick up the American Psycho Blu-ray here, »

New Zealand Billboard for American Psycho

28 December 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

While the TV airing of a 10 year old film isn't exactly "news", this promotional advertisement for an upcoming TV airing of Mary Harron's American Psycho on New Zealand station TV2 was too cool not to share with our devoted readers and fellow horror enthusiasts. The Hollywood Reporter Live Feed Blog pointed out the billboard that was erected to showcase the classic business card scene. Granted, if you've never seen the movie, the billboard will probably make no sense. However, if you have, it's a pretty cool and unique way to promote the movie's TV airing. Based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel, American Psycho stars Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, Samantha Mathis, Jared Leto and Willem Dafoe. Reese Witherspoon plans to spend time skiing with friends and her children this Christmas after her Thanksgiving breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal, according to a source. Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal joined the star-studded crowd who braved the New York City blizzard recently to pop into the Thompson Smyth Tribeca hotel, where Justin Theroux, Mark Ronson and Scott Campbell hosted a holiday party benefiting God's Love We Deliver. Joining the Brokeback Mountain star were Mary-Louise Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Will Arnett and Josh Hartnett. 'Jake hung out with the guys all night,' a source said. 'He seemed in good spirits. He and Matt Dillon chatted for a good portion of the night and were laughing at each other's stories.' »

Info Meme

As if I wasn't already finding him swoon-worthy,, a newly single Jake Gyllenhaal stepped out in New York City last night to a benefit for God's Love We Deliver, an HIV/AIDS charity. People bills it as a guy's night affair, as the party was thrown by Justin Theroux, Mark Ronson and Scott Campbell. Still, cute, single, and doing good? Call me Jake!

File this under news I didn't expect to ever hear, but the official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has issued a statement praising The Simpsons. The Vatican says that without the residents of Springfield, "many today wouldn't know how to laugh" and even said it could be possible to come up with a "Simpsonian philosophy." Okely-dokely then.

I know I show my true colors as an Anglophile fairly frequently in these Memes, but one thing that does put me off is how intrusive it feels law enforcement is at times. »

Iron Man 2 – Trailer

Iron Man 2 – Trailer

Directed by: Jon Favreau

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell

Rating: Nr

Release Date: May 7, 2010

Trailer Score: 8/10

My Thoughts: Robert Downey Jr. is Mr. Blockbuster. On Christmas Day he’ll have another huge film on his hands with Sherlock Holmes co-starring Jude Law. But we all know Iron Man put him on the map. No, not the acting map, he’d been there for years. I’ll talking household name status. And now it’s his second go round as the man in iron. What do I want? I want an enemy that isn’t simply and over-sized version of Iron Man. I also want Downey to continue to be drinking and sarcastic as Mr. Stark. As for Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard. Yeah, I guess I don’t care. Um, good lord, I forget Scarlet Johansson is »

Gwyneth Paltrow Flirts With Robert Downey Jr. in 'Iron Man 2' Trailer

16 December 2009 6:38 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

While "Iron Man 2" is generally an action movie, it will still offer sexual tension between its major characters. Through its first trailer, the movie exposes how Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts leaves Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark aka Iron Man yearning for more when Potts gives his helmet a smooch in answer to his request for a kiss.

The growing romance between the two is only a part of the trailer, though. The rest of the promo video displays more of the actions the movie has in store. Mickey Rourke's Whiplash cutting Stark's race car in half, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow knocking down men, and Don Cheadle's War Machine providing Iron Man with his aide are some of the scenes teased.

Scripted by "Tropic Thunder" co-scribbler Justin Theroux, "Iron Man 2" sees the return of director Jon Favreau to the helming seat behind Marvel's superhero. »

Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Electric New Iron Man 2 Poster

10 December 2009 9:42 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Over the summer we were given our very first glimpse at Mickey Rourke as the villain Whiplash in Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2, but now Paramount has followed the other recent poster premieres with yet another teaser poster for the highly anticipated sequel featuring the electric whipping antagonist. Combine Rourke's disheveled, unstable prisoner look with a background collage of magazine and newspaper clippings featuring Tony Stark as the heroic Iron Man, and you know Whiplash is going to give Stark a run for his money. Now I guess we'll all be waiting for a poster featuring the sultry redheaded Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Iron Man 2 takes place only "six months after Stark revealed his identity as Iron Man" at the end of the first movie. Jon Favreau is directing again from a screenplay written by actor-turned-writer Justin Theroux. Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, »

Will Iron Man 2 Be Improvised?

4 December 2009 1:35 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Jon Favreau recently admitted that Robert Downey Jr. helped rewrite scenes in Iron Man, and there may be a good reason for that. Jeff Bridges, who played Iron Man's villain Obadiah Stane, told InContention that Downey Jr. and Favreau had to improvise on the set because they lacked a script.

They had no script. They had an outline. We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn't know what we were going to say. We would have to go into our trailer and work on this scene and call up writers on the phone, "You got any ideas?" Meanwhile the crew is tapping their foot on the stage waiting for us to come on.

You would think with a $200 million movie you'd have the s**t together, but it was just the opposite. And the reason for that is because they get ahead of themselves. They »

Iron Man 2 International Teaser Poster

3 December 2009 6:53 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Just a few days ago an amazing new poster for Iron Man 2 featuring the titular armor-suited hero standing back-to-back with War Machine was released. It marked the first time we got an official look at War Machine (as he’ll appear in the film), who’s real identity is Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes, being played by Don Cheadle (after he replaced Terrence Howard).

The poster caused geekgasms everywhere amongst superhero movie fans (I know Screen Rant’s readers were particularly psyched by it, anyway ), and rightfully so. However, John Favreau, Marvel Studios and Paramount haven’t just left it at that: Some brand new images from Iron Man 2 were released not long after the poster was, now another new poster has been released.

The international teaser (as it’s being dubbed) shows just Iron Man on his own, but this time de-masked. It looks a little strange at first glance, »

Iron Man 2 Poster Brings the War Machine

30 November 2009 3:47 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Paramount has released a teaser poster (seen below) for Iron Man 2 that gives us the first official look at War Machine, the weaponized Mark II battlesuit warn by Tony Stark’s friend James “Rhodey” Rhodes.  After a cast shake-up, Rhodey will be played by Don Cheadle and not Terrence Howard in the May 7, 2010 release.

The machine gun-equipped hero was shown briefly in footage at Comic-Con and pictures of the action figure have popped up online, but this is a better (yet still partial) look at what all the kids will be talking about six months from now.  I think we all can agree it looks sweet.

As for other Iron Man news, Jon Favreau has hinted that a teaser trailer will be shown in front of Sherlock Holmes opening Christmas Day.  Plus, in an interview with Empire Magazine, the director discussed the script phase and said Robert Downey Jr. »

Robert Downey Jr. “Very Involved” In Rewriting Iron Man 2 Screenplay

30 November 2009 7:25 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It sounds like there's been a lot kitchen hands, if not exactly chefs, stirring ingredients into Iron Man 2. The first named screenwriter was Justin Theroux, the actor and famously a co-writer of Tropic Thunder; there's also the Marvel brain trust made up of some of their brightest and best comic book talents; and now, Jon Favreau has revealed that Tony Stark's off-screen alter-ego Robert Downey Jr. played a significant part in shaping the sequel's screenplay. Of course, there's no doubt that Favreau himself had a hand in the story and structure, if not the precise beats and dialogue so we're definitely looking at a group collaboration here. I remember that Edward Norton took control of the Incredible Hulk script, for better or worse. He suffered quite a drubbing for that, too. Could Downey end up the scapegoat if Iron Man 2 ends up falling short of expectations? Hopefully not, »

Sam Rockwell Compares 'Iron Man 2' To 'Frost/Nixon' And 'The Green Mile'

24 November 2009 2:23 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Our week of exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers we're thankful for this year continues on MTV Movies with "Moon" star Sam Rockwell — who also happens to have a big role in next year's much-anticipated "Iron Man 2" as billionaire weapons dealer Justin Hammer.

Last time we spoke with Rockwell, he told us about his character's involvement in the creation of the War Machine armor, as well as his sources of inspiration for the character (hint: they weren't found in the comics). This time around, Rockwell followed up discussion of potential Oscar buzz surrounding his role in the indie sci-fi flick "Moon" with a bit more insight into "Iron Man 2" production.

"On 'Frost/Nixon' or 'Green Mile,' we all felt like, 'This is a big deal!' On 'Iron Man [2],' it did feel like a big deal at first, but we got very comfortable very quickly, »

Sam Rockwell Remembers His Year Of Space Travel And 'Iron Man 2'

24 November 2009 12:00 AM, PST | MTV Movie News | See recent MTV Movie News news »

With Oscar buzz for his performance in 'Moon' and 'Iron Man 2' on the way, Rockwell has a lot to be thankful for.

Was there a more inventive performance in 2009 than Sam Rockwell's in "Moon"? Or, we should say, the performances of the many, many Sam Rockwells who show up in this sci-fi mind-bender about outer space, isolation and technology? The actor took a risk with first-time director Duncan Jones and the gamble paid off big time: The movie was one of the coolest of the year and Rockwell has rightly been mentioned as a potential Oscar candidate.

So MTV News must express our gratitude during this week in which we are giving thanks to the best films and brightest performances of the year. But when it comes to Rockwell, we're also thankful for a movie we haven't seen yet: "Iron Man 2, »
