Before taking up his career in dance, he studied medicine. Later, he
attended George Balanchine's School of American Ballet. He was one of
the original members of the Joffrey Ballet, and led his own dance
company from 1962 to 1969. After his company closed due to financial
problems, he became a freelance choreographer. His works have been
performed by the English National Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the
Royal Danish Ballet, and the National Ballet of Canada.
