‘Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians’ Collection DVD Review

Director: Kôichi Ôhata

Starring: Veronica Taylor, Akeno Watanabe, Caitlin Glass, Masumi Asano, Wendee Lee

Running Time: 300 Minutes

Certificate: 18

Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians is the most difficult anime series I have ever had the pleasure of reviewing for a number of reasons. The series focusses on a group of young scantly-clad women guided by the spirits of ancient warriors in order to become ultimate martial arts fighters. It should be stated now that this is by no means a complicated plot and it is also incredibly easy to follow. However what makes the series slightly confusing in terms of its quality, is the mixed bag of visual and narrative divergences. By this I am of course referring to the emphasis the show puts on provocative imagery, which can clearly be seen from the DVD’s marketing.

Some characters and storylines within the series’ 12 episode run may cause slight confusion to those

15 Things You Won’t Believe Are 15 Years Old

Did you still have that problem where you think the majority of the ’90s happened, like, 10 years ago? Us, too. Isn’t it depressing when you suddenly remember that the year 1990, in fact, occurred an unbelievable 23 years ago? Does that even make sense? Well, according to “logic”, yes, it makes perfect sense, but for a whole bunch of us, there’s no quite shaking the strange feeling that somebody is working out all this year stuff entirely wrong.

It seems, then, that our perceptions of when certain things came into the world have probably be distorted through a bizarre combination of nostalgia and the fact that life goes way, way faster when you get older. Can you believe, for example, that the following 15 things are 15 freakin’ years old? Seriously: we wouldn’t lie to you when it comes to serious subjects like this. How old do you feel now? Is it really old?

Movie Review - Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Grave of the Fireflies, (Japanese: Hotaru no haka) 1988.

Directed by Isao Takahata.

Featuring the voice talents of J. Robert Spencer, Rhoda Chrosite, Amy Jones and Veronica Taylor.

Synopsis:

A tragic film covering a young boy and his little sister's struggle to survive in Japan during World War II.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary and UK theatrical debut, Studio Ghibli and director Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies is released May 24th. I came to the film having been recommended it for years; it’s a classic war film, a beautiful piece of animation, a great tearjerker. And I can see that it is all of these, though it wasn’t consistently powerful throughout (put that down to the power of hype). Despite this though it’s a terrific, elegiac film, directed and animated with sensitivity and elegant taste.

Based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s semi-autobiographical 1967 novel, we follow teenage boy Seita

365 Days, 100 Films #23 - Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Grave of the Fireflies, 1988.

Directed by Isao Takahata.

Featuring the voice talents of J. Robert Spencer, Rhoda Chrosite, Amy Jones and Veronica Taylor.

Synopsis:

A boy and his younger sister struggle to survive in war-torn Japan during World War II.

"Yes, it's a cartoon, and the kids have eyes like saucers, but it belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made." -Roger Ebert

Seita is a pre-teenager in Japan who has just lived through World War Two. The film opens on him as he slowly passes away, homeless and starving in a train station. His war is over as he utters “Setsuko” with his last breath. He whispers it in the same way Kane spoke ‘Rosebud’. The camera tracks back as two janitors start to tidy him away. The shot’s increased scope reveals many more like him, supported by the station’s numerous pillars. Commuters consider them a nuisance.

Turtles Forever DVD Review

Turtles Forever Directed by: Roy Burdine and Lloyd Goldfine Written by: Robert David, Matthew Drdek, Lloyd Goldfine Starring: Michael Sinterniklaas, Wayne Grayson, Sam Riegel, Gregory Abbey, Darren Dunstan, Marc Thompson, Veronica Taylor The times they are a changin'. Nowadays, even Michaelangelo is irritated by the grinning, pun-happy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of old. Sure, it may be a slap in the face to fans of the older series they grew up with, but Turtles Forever is just fan service topped with fan service with a side order of fan service. The concept is nothing short of brilliant, having multiple generations of the Ninja Turtles meet in their own dimensions via portals. The movie features three groups of Turtles: the recent '03 series, the original '90s cartoon, and the comic book source material. It's how these three intertwine that makes this work. What used to make total sense back in
