The Best Films of the Decade (aka "The Naughties")

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry

List # 1

By Alex Simon

When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.

1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

Top of the class: the five best boarding-school movies

5 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

If… (15) Lindsay Anderson, 1968 Starring Malcolm McDowell

Made in the heady days of global unrest and protest, Anderson's boarding-school flick caught the mood of anti-establishment disaffection. Its exotic flourishes – making out with a libidinous waitress; gunning down the faculty with weapons stolen from the cadet force armoury – fuelled the fantasies of rebellious schoolboys everywhere.

Best scene

College House listens in uncomfortable silence as Travis (McDowell) is given a brutal caning by the head whip.

Flirting (15) John Duigan, 1991

Starring Noah Taylor, Thandie Newton

"One thing about boarding school, 24 hours a day, you're surrounded," begins misfit Taylor, stuck in a rural Australian boys' school in 1965. "Either you abandon yourself and become a herd animal, or dig deeper into your head and skulk inside." Taylor finds a different path when he discovers love with Newton from a nearby girls' school.

Best scene

Taylor defends his girlfriend's honour, in the boxing ring against the school's top pugilist. »

Despite his quiet air of danger, Nate’s the only guy who doesn’t seem to want to get her into bed at the first opportunity, and the two form a hesitant bond. But one of Erica’s casual sexual encounters is about to bite back.

Franki (Marc Senter) is a young, hot-headed wannabe rock star trying to make it big. Looking after a sick mother and estranged from his longterm girlfriend, he “shared” Erica with his buddies one drunken evening. A shocking discovery throws his already crazy world into a spin, »

The casting for Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland is no bit shy of all-star, either. With returning Burton collaborators like Oscar-nominated Johnny Depp and Oscar-nominated Helena Bonham Carter (who have worked with Burton in a wealth of very successful films) are Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince star Alan Rickman, HBO series In Treatment star Mia Wasikowska, Oscar-nominated Anne Hathaway, Stephen Fry, Crispin Glover, Timothy Spall, Christopher Lee, Noah Taylor, Matt Lucas, and, of course, The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Michael Sheen (as the White Rabbit). Of course, the storyline is nothing new, but this film promises to be a new interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s classic »

A sneak peak look at ‘Alice in Wonderland’

30 July 2009 6:06 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Director Tim Burton's newest film Alice In Wonderland was a remarkably important feature at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event. Though the first trailer for the film was leaked online the day before Alice In Wonderland’s panel, that did nothing to stunt the fan-base interest and presence at the Comic-Con panel. With an appearance by Burton, as well as a surprise showing by Johnny Depp, the film trailer’s reception was astounding. With fascinating computer imaging, dynamic color contrasts, and the promise of a phenomenal adult-friendly film, the preview was all that fans could have expected. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Teaser Trailer

23 July 2009 9:55 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Here’s another panel I missed out on. In this case, it was on purpose. I didn’t feel like fighting the “Twilight” kids to get in to see this, which showed before the “New Moon” panel in Hall H. In any case, I suspect that much of the panel was full of “Twilight” fans waiting for their precious Edward, Jacob, and Bella that was coming up next, so I don’t know, I’m guessing this trailer showed well out of its target audience. But here it is anyway, the first teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”. The adventures of a young girl, Alice, who falls into a magical world full of strange characters and darkness behind every corner. Starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Stephen Fry, Timothy Spall, Crispin Glover, Christopher Lee, Noah Taylor, Matt Lucas, Marton Csokas, »

More Alice Pics Revealed

5 July 2009 4:12 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Callooh! Callay! More frabjous shots from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland have surfaced, courtesy of Coming Soon's scans of Mary Ellen Mark's Vanity Fair spread.Colour-wise these are nowhere near as, well, loud as the previously released batch, lending the project a much darker vibe. The poses are similar to what we've seen before, but it's our closest glimpse so far of Aussie newcomer Mia Wasikowska as Alice. She's holding a white rabbit, which we guess means that the bunny being clutched by Johnny Depp's Hatter is a March Hare. Doesn't look much like Noah Taylor though.Helena Bonham Carter meanwhile, is nursing a pig. Aside from the League of Gentleman connotations, this suggests yet more mangling of the source text. It already appears that her royal highnessness is an amalgam of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland and the Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass. »
