With its Playhouse Presents plays, live opera and a new series starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm, Sky Arts is increasingly moving up the must-watch list
Sky Arts is keen on springing surprises of the "odd but interesting" kind. The latest example is the engagement of Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe and Mad Men's Jon Hamm to star in A Young Doctor's Notebook, an adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's Village of Muryovo set in 1917 which will broadcast next year under the Playhouse Presents banner. Made as a four-part comedy drama by Rev producer Big Talk Productions, it is bound to be worth sampling. Much the same thing can be said of the current, third and best run of original plays on the channel, which have featured pairings such as Sir Tom Jones and Brenda Blethyn discovering a lost love.
The results aren't always brilliant – but the key is that Sky »

We fell in love with Kathy Burke when she appeared on our screens as Waynetta Slob and Linda in Gimme Gimme Gimme. Now she's written a TV drama based on her 70s childhood that will steal hearts. She shares a cuppa with Miranda Sawyer
At home with Kathy Burke. What joy! Especially on a day like today. Through the kitchen window we watch the rain tip down on her leafy patio garden. Inside, all is cosy. Kathy bustles about, proffering hot drinks, warm jokes. She has 6Music on the radio, nice art on her walls. An enormous painting of small children sitting in a row; the four members of Blur, each on a Dazed & Confused cover. She interviewed Damon for the magazine. "He's not the type to look back, Mr Albarn, is he? I like that. Are you all right without a biscuit?"
Kathy makes you feel so welcome, it's »

The eighth season of The Office was an important one. Everyone wondered after Steve Carell’s exit whether the show could still work well while making us laugh. After 24 episodes the answer seems to be a resounding, “meh.” Critics and fans alike who’ve been watching since the beginning have had very mixed reactions to the Michael-less Scranton branch. Truth be told, The Office has been a series which peaked early (seasons two to three) and has been steadily though gradually dipping in overall quality ever since. Don’t get me wrong; up until this last season I’ve still been a big fan who’s looked forward to each new episode every week. But I think most can agree the last three seasons just haven’t packed the same punch.
I’m not saying change is a bad thing. In fact I’m pretty sure »

After lengthy talks and negotiations, stars Ed Helms, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer have agreed in principal to return for another series of NBC’s “The Office”. Talks had almost reached the 11th hour at NBC, which as recently as a few weeks ago left execs in a panic and even considering a reboot of the show with a brand new cast, but the trio are now “inches away from signing on the dotted line” for a return and work at Dunder Mifflin will continue as normal, according to Deadline.
The hold-up in talks was over money and scheduling (is there ever anything else in dispute with these things?). Helms’ film career has shot through the roof with “The Hangover” series’ success and he is about to shoot the third movie in that saga this summer which is set to bag him $15 million (plus percentages of profits) alone and he no longer needed the show, »

"The Office" (Thu., 9 p.m. Et on NBC) finale seemed determine to right the ship a bit. Some viewers feel the show got a little off track this season, in large part due to the over-the-top and unpredictable antics of new Sabre CEO Robert California (James Spader).
The return of David Wallace, who officially asserted himself as the new owner of Dunder-Mifflin -- now free from the Sabre umbrella -- not only put Andy back in the manager's office, but also signaled a return to the earlier days of "The Office." There's no need for big stars to fill those roles because the show is about the everyday and the mundane.
With the core cast signing up for a ninth season, "The Office" seems a lock to be picked up again. So maybe a new season that refocuses on the happenings in the office will bring back that spark that »

"The Office" has had a difficult season, both in the ratings, where it's down a good amount from last year, and creatively, where it has struggled to find a center after Michael Scott went off to be happy.
For part of the spring it looked like the show, while pretty much a foregone conclusion to come back in the fall, might go through another creative overhaul as several regulars were at the end of their contracts. We're not sure the show could have survived that.
Ed Helms, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer have all re-upped for next year, so that hurdle's out of the way (although this was likely Mindy Kaling's last episode since her Fox pilot got picked up). "Free Family Portrait Studio" also ended the season on an up note, restoring a semblance of order without negating the season's worth of episodes that preceded it.

One season finale ago, The Office put together a search committee to find out who should replace Steve Carrell. Among the main contestants were James Spader, Catherine Tate, and Ed Helms’ Andy Bernard. Yet as tonight’s finale confirmed, there are no real winners at Dunder Mifflin — a year later, they’re all still lingering around Michael Scott’s old desk.
The episode began with a promising cold open centering on Oscar’s attempt to shoot an “It Gets Better” video. But, wouldn’t you know it, Robert California hijacks the moment on multiple levels, reminding all of us why »

Catherine Tate is to star in new Sky Arts comedy 'Psychobitches'. The comedienne will take on the dual roles of Adolf Hitler's girlfriend Eva Braun and French singer Edith Piaf in the programme which is part of the channel's Playhouse Presents series. The 30 minute comedy, puts history's most famous women into the psychiatrist's chair and shines a spotlight on their psychoses and obsessions. Starring Rebecca Front as the therapist, the programme will also feature Sharon Horgan as Jane Austen and Frieda Kahlo, Katy Brand as Joan of Arc and George Eliot, Sheila Reid as Mother Theresa, Samantha Spiro as Mary Whitehouse and »

No, there’s nothing wrong with your screen or your vision, I have in fact given the newest episode of The Office more than three stars and it’s not because I’m slowly slipping into insanity; it’s because “Turf War” was a rather good episode for season eight. The episode not only featured the usual batch of subtle and humorous little contributions from the supporting cast, but additionally those contributions complemented those of the main cast which all stemmed from a relatively realistic plot that called forth great broad as well as specific comedy and genuine tension making for a well paced and well balanced episode.
In case it’s not immediately evident, let me clarify that I say “relatively realistic plot” because although the main story of resolving the dilemma of how to distribute recently closed Binghamton branch’s newly available clients among »

Simon Pegg, Catherine Tate and Amelia Bullmore were among those in the surreal sketch show
It is 10 years since Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan's cult comedy Big Train came to a final halt. While they were not quite a runaway success at the time, Big Train's two BBC series did prove to be an express route for the show's cast with Mark Heap, Julia Davis, Kevin Eldon, Catherine Tate, Simon Pegg, Amelia Bullmore, Rebecca Front and Tracy-Ann Oberman graduating from the surreal comedy to dominate British comedy acting.
It was their talent, combined with the Father Ted creators' brilliant writing, that helped to produce one of the most original and most consistently funny sketch shows in years. With its subversion of everyday situations by the surreal or macabre, the cast's believable portrayals and evident chemistry put the comedy into a class of its own. But few could have »

It had been almost a month since the last episode of The Office aired, and its return confirmed the sad truth: this show has become a mediocre comedy this season.
"Welcome Party" was filled with a few heartwarming moments, and a couple of laugh out loud scenes here and there, but every new installment seems to make it more and more obvious that The Office is a shell of what it used to be.
Catherine Tate was pretty polarizing in her first few performances, but at least she was giving audiences an opinion. Here, her Nellie Bertram was neither hilarious nor detestable, and instead was used as a sympathetic character taking on the mean-spirited words of her coworkers. Whether Nellie deserved the hate from the office, or the love from Jim's defense, it didn't have much of an effect on our viewing pleasure.
The fake party for Nellie did bring »

Luke Owen on last night's episode of The Apprentice 2012...
Rolling around into week 3 of the process and things are heating up (not too much or Duane may choke). The interesting thing about this stage is that the split of "boys team" and "girls team" goes out the window and the teams get mixed up – the way it should be from the start really. Oh, and I’m starting to learn people’s names.
This week’s task was a saucy one and neither team could afford to lose their bottle. Okay I’ll stop that now. The task was to create a new condiment to sell to the general public and retailers. In order to shake things up (and even out the teams now we’re two girls down), Katie joined Team Phoenix and Duane and Nick moved over to Team Loser, I mean Team Sterling. Team Phoenix was certainly »

Huzzah! After much media brooding and betting about the identity of the new Doctor Who companion, actress Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced at a press call last Wednesday.
The speculation had been gathering at pace of late, with a few whispers of Sophia Myles somehow coming back to Who after playing Madame du Pompadour six-odd years ago. Possibly this was some sneaky red herring paper trail left by Steven Moffat who urged his Twitter followers to follow La Myles, while a forthcoming interview in Doctor Who Magazine could have also been a clue. But no – quite how Sophia will be involved in the next series (at the time of writing this) is a mystery, so apologies if early next week she's announced as the next incarnation of The Rani.
What else? Waterloo Road, a programme that I dip into about once in a blue moon. It's an odd one in that »

It was announced earlier in the week that the upcoming seventh series of the revived Doctor Who will see Matt Smith's Doctor getting a new companion in former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, and the first image of the as-yet-unnamed character has now been revealed.
Coleman - whose other credits include Waterloo Road, Captain America: The First Avenger and the four-part Titanic miniseries - will join the show in this year's Christmas special, where she will replace The Doctor's current companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). Coleman will be following in the footsteps of the likes of Billie Piper (Secret Diary of a Call Girl), John Barrowman (Torchwood), Catherine Tate (The Catherine Tate Show), Noel Clarke (Kidulthood) and Freema Agyeman (Law & Order: UK), all of whom have served as companion's to the Timelord following the series' revival in 2005.

"Doctor Who" fans already knew that this season — the show's 50th anniversary season — would be the last one to feature Karen Gillan as the Doctor's trusted companion Amy Pond (and also Arthur Darvill as Amy's husband Rory). And now we know who will be tasked with replacing her: 25-year-old actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, who's previously been on UK shows like "Emmerdale." Where the original "Doctor Who" series featured companions of all ages and sizes, the modern series has, with the exception of one season with Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, stuck to a pattern of attractive women in their 20s, a »

Jenna-Louise Coleman has landed one of the most sought after roles on television.
The 25-year old British actress as been cast on Doctor Who as the title character's new companion. She will replace Karen Gillian on the BBC smash after that long-time star departs later this year. Said Coleman in a statement:
"I'm beyond excited, I can't wait to get cracking; working alongside Matt [Smith] I know is going to be enormous fun and a huge adventure."
Doctor Who was rebooted in 2005 and past companions, aside from Gillian, have been played by Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate.
"It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together we knew we had our girl," said executive producer Steven Moffat of the casting. "She's funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the Tardis."
So, how will her character debut? »

If we were conducting Catherine Tate's The Office performance review like Nellie Bertram did of her employees at Dunder Mifflin Scranton - that is, on first impressions - she would also be receiving a raise.
Tate's first appearance last season was intriguing, and her stint as head honcho down in Florida was entertaining, but in "Get the Girl" it became obvious that Nellie Bertram as branch manager could be exactly what The Office needs to stay afloat.
She is very strange, but not in a way that is too similar to Michael Scott or Andy Bernard, nor in a way that is just too slow and boring most of the time like Robert California. Nellie proved she was upbeat, off the walls and that she can create a lot of weird situations for our favorite paper suppliers.
The way that she took charge and took over Andy's office was great. »
