'Awkward' cast talks Season 3B premiere, Jenna's rebellious choices, and the darkest point of the series

22 October 2013 6:00 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

MTV's hit dramedy "Awkward" is heading to an entirely new, dark place in the back half of Season 3, kicking off Tuesday (Oct. 22).

Jenna (Ashely Rickards) made the shocking choice to cheat on her all-around perfect boyfriend Matty (Beau Mirchoff) in the Season 3A finale, and that one choice will catapult her and everyone around her onto a new path that no one expected to see. "Beginning of Season 3B, we're picking up where we don't even know if Matty has seen her and Collin making out," Rickards tells Zap2it. "Going into this episode, it's so unclear about who knows what and what's out of the bag, let alone what Jenna's going to do about it. There's a lot to catch up on."

So how will Jenna's choices affect everyone around her, and what's coming up for everyone in the second half of Season 3?

Teen Queens and Their ‘G.B.F.’ Close Outfest

22 July 2013 8:16 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

G.B.F.” broke both stereotypes and theater capacities at Outfest’s maxed out Closing Night Gala at Hollywood’s John Ansen Ford Theatre on Sunday.

Even a little unseasonable Los Angeles sprinkling over the amphitheater couldn’t put a damper on the laughter at this teen romp, which closed out the Lgbt sprocket opera’s 31st year.

La’s real live G.B.F.’s came out to catch helmer Darren Stein’s latest vehicle. While the pic stands to knock down a few stereotypes about gay men (and other beloved teen comedy tropes), Outfest’s Christopher Racster said the crowd stayed true to one in particular: they looked fabulous.

“What a beautiful group of people we are,” he hollered at the surrounding hills.

Producer Stephen Israel had originally selected George Northy’s script for Outfest’s Screenwriting Lab two years ago before going on to produce the pic. He says he immediately »

The Gay Best Friend Takes the Lead in Darren Stein’s “G.B.F.”

18 July 2013 10:36 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Tanner (Michael J. Willett) is the Gbf everyone wants (including Sasha Pieterse)

In the fine tradition of teen comedies like Clueless, Pretty In Pink, Mean Girls and even darker films like the original Carrie, comes the new film, G.B.F., which fabulously dives into the world of the Gay Best Friend. Directed by Darren Stein (Jawbreaker) from a script by George Northy, the film follows high schooler Tanner (Michael J. Willett) as he navigates the treacherous waters of high school after coming out.

In the world of G.B.F., there’s less opposition to Tanner being gay than the comedy found in how people want to be close to the cute gay guy. The popular girls compete for Tanner’s friendship, even helping him with a makeover; at least one closeted guy (the Bf of one of the girls) makes a pass at him and, at the end of the day, he »

‘Awkward’ Recap: Jenna Faces Her Feelings For Collin

11 June 2013 9:09 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Spoiler alert: Stop reading if you haven’t watched this week’s ‘Awkward!’

Is Awkward even a comedy anymore? Because after witnessing Jenna’s (Ashley Rickards) actions on the June 11 mid-season finale, I’ll tell you one thing: I ain’t laughin’.

I’m referring, of course, to her unpardonable sin, the one thing we’ve all been fearing would come since the first episode of the season: She kissed Collin (Nolan Funk)! Yes, it was passionate. Yes, it was epic. But most importantly, it was wrong.

To be honest, I don’t really care what’s going on in Jenna’s head; Matty (Beau Mirchoff) has been the perfect boyfriend this season — not only has he put up with her incessant pity parties, but he even learned how to dance/give good face for her — and what she did this week was unforgivable.

In fact, both Matty and Jake »

‘Awkward’ Recap: Jenna Tries To Fight Her Crush On Collin

4 June 2013 8:51 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

But was she able to squash it completely? Things aren’t looking too good for ‘Team Matty.’

What the hell is wrong with Jenna (Ashley Rickards)? After acing another super-inappropriate writing assignment on the June 4 episode of Awkward, she admitted to herself that she’s indeed in a “flirtationship” with Collin (Nolan Funk). This girl, I swear.

And no matter how much Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) urged her to crush the crush — while simultaneously coining adorable terms like “flirtationship” — the ever-fickle Ms. Hamilton couldn’t keep herself from fantasizing about her new pen pal.

She eventually gave Matty (Beau Mirchoff) a copy of her very-telling writing assignment, but as always, Matty was barely able to read the words on the paper — let alone between the lines, which would reveal a hopeless crush on Collin; or as I’ll always think of him, ‘that other evil Warbler from Glee.’

‘Awkward’: Nikki DeLoach Previews Jenna & Colin’s Love Connection

28 May 2013 10:33 AM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

A new guy has officially entered the ring! Is this the end of Jenna & Matty?

On the May 28 episode of Awkward, Team Matty and Team Jake will finally be able to unite under a common enemy: Team Colin! Jenna (Ashley Rickards) has been casually inching closer to brooding bookworm Colin (Nolan Funk) all season, but sparks will really start to fly when they come together for a live reading of their work — and you can bet Jenna’s mom will have a few thoughts on the matter.

“She’s a huge Team Matty supporter,” Nikki DeLoach tells of Lacey. “She’s going to have some very specific thoughts on Colin. … Any time a new boy, or a new person in general, comes into the picture … you’re so affected by them. That’s what happens in middle school and high school; you become those you hang out with. »

Awkward., Ep 3.05: “Indecent Exposure” explores the issues couples face when living under the same roof

Moving in together can be a big change for a couple, no matter their age or the stage of their relationship. With Matty moving into the Hamilton household at the end of last week, the relationship between him and Jenna was bound to change as a result of being under the same roof for the first time, particularly due to the unexpected nature of the move. Whether the increased proximity would help or hurt the couples’ second go-round was the key question, and it’s one that the show tackles this week in a nuanced manner, adding another dimension to Matty while further fleshing out Mr. Hart and Jenna’s Writing Class.

It was fascinating to watch how Matty and Jenna’s »

‘Awkward’ Recap: Jenna Farts & A Ghostly Secret Comes Out

7 May 2013 8:54 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Disclaimer: The events in that headline aren’t exactly connected, but they both happened. And they both changed everything.

In an attempt to assert herself as the “cheer-ultimate” instead of just a “cheer-alternate,” Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) infiltrated Sadie’s (Molly Tarlov) annual team sleepover on the May 7 episode of Awkward. But there was a surprise guest waiting for them at Chez Saxton: the ghost of their slutty, bisexual ex-boyfriend Ricky Schwartz! He came bearing secrets, and like Tom Cruise in that movie, the girls could not handle the truth.

Who Killed Ricky Schwartz?

I loved everything about this set-up. Not only did we get to see yet another layer to Sadie’s tragic new life — the writers are peeling her character like a banana this season — but the whole thing felt like an awesome ’80s movie spoof. The sleepover, the Ouija Board, and of course, Brett Daverns‘ Zak Morris hair. »

‘Awkward’ Recap: Jenna & Matty Take A Surprising Next Step

30 April 2013 7:59 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Plus, who had sex — and possibly a sandwich?

“I’m sorry I took your daughter’s virginity.” Yes, that line was actually spoken aloud on the April 30 episode of Awkward, as the show truly lived up to its name like never before. Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) were forced to discuss their sex life over dinner with all four of their parents — but that wasn’t the strangest part of the episode.

No, the strangest part came at the very end when Matty showed up on the Hamiltons’ doorstep — asking if he could crash for a while!

While having Matty under her roof will probably seem great to Jenna at first — the previews show her walking in on him in a towel, which is kind of a treat for everyone — we see that it begins to take a toll on their relationship. Only on television would anyone ever »

While Jenna’s pregnancy scare last week turned out to be a false alarm, she still expressed concern over telling Matty, a concern exacerbated by Lacey’s advice to grin and bear it. Despite this, however, Ricky’s wake, in addition to revealing what people really thought of him, also revealed Jenna’s possible pregnancy to Matty, with the news destabilising him. This week’s episode focuses on the fallout from this revelation, delivering a touching episode that opens up a secondary character further as well.

The insecurity in Matty and Jenna’s relationship is very deftly handled this episode. Given the past history between Jenna and Matty, as well as the ongoing relationship between Jenna and Jake, which has its own history, »
