New on DVD Blu-ray August 26, 2014: 'Belle,' 'Portlandia,' 'Walking Dead'

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week

"Belle"

What's It About? This 18th century English romance is about Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a biracial woman raised by her aristocratic great uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mansfield. She grows up alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) as equals and best friends, but as they come of age, their differences become all too apparent -- to each other and to their would-be suitors. Meanwhile, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) is facing a trial as Lord Chief Justice of England that could change the future of slavery. Will Dido find love on her own terms?

Why We're In: It's an elegant period piece perfect for Jane Austen fans, and it's a subtle but effective examination of the intersection of class and race in 18th century England. Mbatha-Raw is fantastic, and director Amma Asante has an excellent eye for detail.

Steven Spielberg May Still Direct 'West Side Story' Remake

9 August 2014 5:40 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in March, it was widely reported that 20th Century Fox was moving forward on a remake of the classic 1961 musical West Side Story, with Steven Spielberg interested in directing. It sounded like it might be the next project for the iconic filmmaker, but he instead decided on two other back-to-back projects that were gestating, an adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's novel The Bfg (The Big Friendly Giant), and the very different Untitled Cold War Thriller starring Tom Hanks and Amy Ryan. If you were disappointed by this news, don't worry, it sounds like Steven Spielberg may still direct West Side Story sometime in the near future.

Appearing along with Oprah Winfrey on Good Morning America to promote their joint production The Hundred-Foot Journey, in theaters this weekend, Steven Spielberg was asked if he was still considering his remake of Robert Wise's classic West Side Story. The director »

‘Twin Peaks’ Cast, Crew Celebrate Unseen Footage Release

17 July 2014 3:06 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

From David Lynch to the Log Lady, Laura Palmer’s mom and dad and Laura Palmer herself, it was a darn good reunion at Silver Lake’s Vista Theater Wednesday night for the release of “Twin Peaks — The Entire Mystery” on Blu-ray. Almost 90 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes from 1992′s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” have been compiled into to nearly an entire new movie’s worth of material that answers a few questions left hanging in the feature film capper to the cult classic TV series.

Lynch introduced the footage with a signature non-sequitur poem. “Tonight I would like to speak about wood,” the director intoned, “Much happiness can be had from observing a tree.”

Many of the cast members hadn’t seen each other in years, so there was much hugging and catching up. In addition to Log Lady Catherine Coulson, Ray Wise (Leland Palmer), Grace Zabriskie »

Casey Kasem: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About His Early Career

15 June 2014 10:08 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Everybody knows that Casey Kasem was the voice of “American Top 40″ and countless cartoon characters for decades. But who could forget him on “Astrology for Young Lovers”? Or in “Scream Free!” Or as the host of “Shebang.”

In the 1960s and ’70s, Kasem, who died Sunday at age 82, logged roles in a string of B-grade independent features, from American International Prods. and others. He romped with wild bikinis, frisky teenagers, motorcycle clubs, “high on Jesus” types etc. He did a fair amount of on-camera TV work too, as a host and through gusts shots on “Baretta,” “Hawaii 5-0” and such. He was money on NBC’s “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” specials, judging by the number of appearances he made.

The end is here – if someone asked you what the most important movie musical of all time was, it would come from this portion of the list. Obviously, it’s all subjective, but it’s difficult to make a case against the influence of these films on our culture and the industry as a whole. So, cue the orchestra and practice your dance moves, because the closing number is here.

After Rooney's Death, Who Is Earliest Surviving Best Actor Academy Award Nominee?

Mickey Rooney was earliest surviving Best Actor Oscar nominee (photo: Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy in ‘Boys Town’) (See previous post: “Mickey Rooney Dead at 93: MGM’s Andy Hardy Series’ Hero and Judy Garland Frequent Co-Star Had Longest Film Career Ever?”) Mickey Rooney was the earliest surviving Best Actor Academy Award nominee — Babes in Arms, 1939; The Human Comedy, 1943 — and the last surviving male acting Oscar nominee of the 1930s. Rooney lost the Best Actor Oscar to two considerably more “prestigious” — albeit less popular — stars: Robert Donat for Sam Wood’s Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) and Paul Lukas for Herman Shumlin’s Watch on the Rhine (1943). Following Mickey Rooney’s death, there are only two acting Academy Award nominees from the ’30s still alive: two-time Best Actress winner Luise Rainer, 104 (for Robert Z. Leonard’s The Great Ziegfeld, 1936, and Sidney Franklin’s The Good Earth, 1937), and Best Supporting Actress nominee Olivia de Havilland, »

Steven Spielberg Wants to Direct a 'West Side Story' Remake

5 March 2014 12:38 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Steven Spielberg is reportedly interested in directing a remake of the 1961 musical classic West Side Story for 20th Century Fox, as his fellow DreamWorks executive Stacey Snider is pondering a move to the rival studio.

A screenwriter hasn't been set yet, but 20th Century Fox has revived the project specifically because Steven Spielberg is interested in making it. Of course, nothing is official yet, but the director's interest is normally more than enough to get a project into the early stages of development. The filmmaker has only made one remake in his storied career, the 2005 sci-fi thriller War of the Worlds.

The director was previously set to direct the 20th Century Fox/DreamWorks co-production Robopocalypse, but that project was put on hold back in January 2013 due to an escalating budget. The filmmaker, who hasn't directed a film since 2012's Lincoln, was also set to make American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper, »

'Two and a Half Men's' Amber Tamblyn 'fascinated with Brittany Murphy's death'

23 January 2014 1:30 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

As Jenny on "Two and a Half Men," Amber Tamblyn is brash and rash. She's the daughter no one knew Charlie had.

Coming into the CBS Thursday comedy in its 11th season was easier than one might imagine.

"What if I just realized for the first time that Jon Cryer was physically abusive and Ashton Kutcher refused to speak to me and had his entire trailer moved?" Tamblyn asks Zap2it. "They are the two sweetest guys in the whole world. They are so kind and supportive, and so is Conchata Ferrell. She is so funny. I feel like Jenny will become Berta when she grows up.

"I'll help anyone drink," she says of her character. "I will support anyone's alcoholism or drug addiction, I don't care. Holland Taylor is so extraordinary."

She likens this to joining "House" during its long run, but working on a comedy is easier.
