Revisiting HitFix's Ultimate Horror Poll: No. 31 'The Silence of the Lambs'

3 October 2016 6:07 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Throughout the month of October, Chris Eggertsen will offer his personal take on several titles listed in the Top 100 of HitFix's Ultimate Horror Poll from last Halloween. Today, he shines a spotlight on No. 31-ranked The Silence of the Lambs. When discussing The Silence of the Lambs as a horror film, it's worth noting that some don't actually consider the Jonathan Demme-directed serial killer flick to be a horror film at all. As screenwriter Ted Tally told Rolling Stone earlier this year, "They like to say it's the only horror movie to ever win Best Picture. But I always thought of it as a detective movie or a thriller. I have nothing against horror movies. But to me, horror movies involve the supernatural. Lecter may border on supernatural, but he's not." That's an interesting take, but one that feels too reductive of a genre that has, after all, given »

Danish Newcomer Nicolai Fuglsig Will Helm Afghan Wartime Drama Horse Soldiers

29 March 2016 8:24 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Lionsgate and prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer have set sights on relative newcomer Nicolai Fuglsig to helm upcoming wartime drama, Horse Soldiers.

Deadline has the scoop, noting that the Danish filmmaker – perhaps best known for his work as a photojournalist – will work in tandem with Black Label Media and screenwriters Peter Craig and Ted Tally in bringing the actioner to life. Rooted in post-9/11 Afghanistan, the feature film charts the trials and tribulations left facing a CIA crack team who plot course for the Middle East in a bid to dismantle the Taliban.

An early logline for the project reveals that it’ll focus on “a small band of special forces soldiers who rode on horses to confront the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to 1, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential to defeat their opponent throughout the country. »

'Silence of the Lambs'' original ending was even darker

17 February 2016 6:00 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

As part of Deadline's coverage of The Silence of the Lambs' 25th anniversary, the site has published an extended interview with director Jonathan Demme, screenwriter Ted Tally and Robert Bookman, the agent who brokered the deal that brought Thomas Harris's bestselling novel to the big screen. In a previous piece, screenwriter Ted Tally revealed/reminded us that Gene Hackman had originally intended to write, direct and potentially play the role of Hannibal Lecter; this time around, the tidbit that caught my attention was the fact that the film's ending -- which in the finished film sees Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) stalking Frederick Chilton (Anthony Heald) through an island in the Bahamas -- was considerably darker in the original script. From the Deadline story: "The Silence of the Lambs ends when Hannibal Lecter, from a payphone in the tropics, congratulates FBI Academy graduate Clarice Starling and gently warns her not to hunt him, »

Who Silence Of The Lambs Almost Cast As Hannibal Lecter

17 February 2016 1:25 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It.s impossible to picture anyone other than Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence Of The Lambs. Just try. You can.t. But, that was almost the case. Because Gene Hackman was originally so interested in playing Hannibal Lecter, that he not only bought the rights to Thomas Harris. novel, but he wanted to direct the film, as well. Gene Hackman was one of the only individuals in Hollywood interested in buying The Silence Of The Lambs because Manhunter, the Michael Mann adaptation of Harris. original book, Red Dragon, which had Brian Cox in the lead role, had been a financial flop. However, after instigating its development, and while screenwriter Ted Tally was working on the first draft of his script for The Silence Of The Lambs, Gene Hackman randomly dropped out of production for one of the most doting reasons you.re ever likely to hear: »
