Shifty-eyed British character actor of the 50s who specialized in playing elusive, cigarette-dangling shysters and thieves.
His daughter with his wife Joy Shelton, Jennifer Tafler also appeared in some movies. Third child is actor Jonathan Tafler, whose films include Yentl (1982), Song of Songs (2005) and The infidel (2010).
Related by marriage to director Lewis Gilbert who cast him in a number of against-type roles in such films as Reach for the Sky (1956), Sink the Bismarck! (1960) and The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).
Brother of Sheila Aza and uncle of actress-turned-journalist Gillian Gore (1954-2010) and actor-turned-editor/location manager Graham Aza.
Graduated from RADA in 1936. Subsequently appeared in classical roles on stage at the West End and at the Old Vic, between 1944 and 1946.
