Georginio Wijnaldum was denied a dream debut as Southampton came from behind to break Newcastle United hearts and draw 2-2 at St James’ Park.
Steve McClaren’s first game in charge of the Magpies in the Barclays Premier League was a very-entertaining affair, but unfortunately his side could only deliver him a point.
All-too-familiar defensive deficiencies saw Newcastle concede from a Graziano Pelle header, before goals from Papiss Cisse and debutant Wijnaldum put the Magpies in front. However, 10 minutes from the end, Shane Long again exploited the Magpies’ poor defence to nod in a Saints equaliser and rob both Wijnaldum and McClaren of a victory on their respective Newcastle bows.

McClaren’s first Nufc Premier League teamsheet saw Chancel Mbemba handed a debut at centre-back, while Wijnaldum also started for the first time. Aleksandar Mitrovic was left on the bench in favour of Cisse,...

Panic stations should certainly not be taking hold, but Newcastle United have suffered yet another defeat in pre-season – this time a 1-0 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach at St James’ Park – and they just do not look quite right yet under Steve McClaren.
Undoubtedly this was a step-up in opposition compared to what the Magpies have faced to date, but in all honesty Thorgan Hazard’s brilliant winner was a rare bit of quality in an otherwise turgid affair. It was obvious for all of the 21,088 present at St James’ that this was a pre-season match, because it’s pace was practically non-existent.
That’s all of the Magpies’ pre-season fixtures gone now and, with Southampton visiting the North East for the Premier League opener next weekend, McClaren is still searching for a defensive formula that works. Even the home debuts of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and...

Hours after putting four past Sydney Fc in their second friendly of the season – an emotional affair thanks to a pre-game dedication to lost fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney – Newcastle have been linked with a spectacular coup to add a seventh summer signing to the rejuvenated squad.
The same day that it was confirmed that French misfit Sylvain Marveaux has joined Guingamp on loan for the coming season, Twitter lit up with speculation that Newcastle were about to do business with another famous black and white side across Europe, in Juventus. The suggested capture would be of versatile right-sided player Mauricio Isla, who reports in Chile are suggesting is on the verge of a move to Tyneside after the two clubs made an agreement for his services.
That report suggests a deal for around £7.6m.

Just as an exciting pre-season for Newcastle United fans has kicked off with a cavalcade of new signings and the sneaking return of some optimism among even the most cynical of fans, the community has been reminded of how little signings and friendlies and qualms over over-weight players actually matter in the grand scheme of things, after it was announced that two Newcastle fans were killed in the Malaysian Air disaster that has been blamed on war in the Ukraine.
The flight, which carried 295 souls including flight crew, went down in the East of the country yesterday, killing everyone on board, and it was with great sadness that the news was announced that John Alder and Liam Sweeney were among the victims. The pair were travelling to Newcastle’s friendly tour in New Zealand on flight MH17, as a mark of the commitment to the club that had seen...
