The Notable Films of 2011: Part Two

19 December 2010 2:05 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Beaver

Opens: March 23rd 2011

Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

Director: Jodie Foster

Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.

Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.

The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos, »

The Notable Films of 2011: Part One

13 December 2010 7:39 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.

Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).

I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have »

First look at Guillermo Del Toro's standalone game, inSANE

13 December 2010 4:19 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

I was in attendance at the SpikeTV Video Game Awards this weekend, and I can report that the presenter who got the biggest laughs wasn't a comedian like Dane Cook or Nick Swardson, rather it was Guillermo Del Toro, and his ripping of movies adapted into shitty games, and that his high school nickname used to be "Super Meat Boy." But he wasn't just there to crack jokes, he had a game of his own to debut. Del Toro has long be a proponent of video games, and his new venture is no film »

Zombieland Director Ruben Fleischer in Talks to Helm Gangster Squad

1 December 2010 2:24 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Warner Bros. great director search for Gangster Squad may be coming to a close.  Deadline reports that the studio has begun negotiations with director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland).  Fleischer was one of the potential candidates named for the gig back in November along with Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and Jose Padilha (Elite Squad).  The project (which has also been titled “Tales from the Gangster Squad”, but Deadline refers to it simply as “Gangster Squad”) also attracted the attention of Ben Affleck and Darren Aronofsky.

Former L.A. cop Will Beall (Castle) wrote the script, which centers on Sgt. John O’Mara and his attempts to bring down the gangster Micky Cohen in the late 1940s.  The tone of Gangster Squad has been compared to The Untouchables and L.A. Confidential.  Hit the jump for a brief refresher on Fleischer’s other projects.

Fleischer is currently working on the comedy 30 Minutes or Less, »

Adam Sandler Chooses Brooklyn Decker Over Jennifer Aniston In The 'Just Go With It' Trailer

5 November 2010 12:40 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Want to know why we're covering the trailer for "Just Go With It" on Movies Blog instead of on Hollywood Crush? Because, for the first time ever, Jennifer Aniston is starring in a romantic comedy but she's not the romantic interest (or at least that's what this trailer is selling).

The Adam Sandler flick also stars Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker in her big screen debut. Not surprisingly, she is the romantic lead in the film, the plot of which is a bit questionable: A man (Sandler, naturally) pretends he's married to get laid, but then when he finds the girl of his dreams (Decker) he enlists the help of his "homely" (read: she wears glasses, not makeup) friend (Aniston) to continue the ruse just long enough for them to get fake-divorced. While the trailer works hard to make it look like Sandler will ultimately end up with Decker and not Aniston, »
