'Paranormal Activity 3' Hits Theaters, Unveils New Clip

21 October 2011 3:40 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The third installment in the "Paranormal Activity" franchise creeps into theaters this weekend. To get you ready for supernatural chills, there's a sixth viral clip that's been released. "Catfish" directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman direct the film that finds a young Katie (from the first and second films), and her sister Kristi battling evil.

The newest clip shows more found footage, set at night in the bedroom. Paramount has stuck with their grassroots, viral marketing campaign for the film since Oren Peli's 2007 movie. Mysterious VHS tapes — simply labeled with the date, 1988 — were passed around to various websites, revealing similar found footage. See what terror this one contains by clicking right here.

Enter an All New House of Horrors with The Culling

20 October 2011 12:08 PM, PDT | | See recent Dread Central news »

In the horror genre there are few things we love more than the stupidity of young adults! I mean, why not pick up strange, spooky-looking hitchhikers and drive them to their dilapidated home, where you'll eventually encounter all kinds of nastiness? We love you guys!

According to Variety Jeremy Sumpter, Bret Davern, Elizabeth Diprinzio, Chris Coy, Lindsey Godfrey, Virginia Williams, Jonathan Schaech and Harley Graham are starring in indie horror thriller The Culling, currently shooting in New Orleans.

The Culling centers on a group of five college friends who head out of town for a fun-filled long weekend, but their plans change after finding a 7-year-old girl alone at an empty cafe along the highway and have no choice but to drive her home. When they arrive at her house, it's quickly apparent they will have to stay for the night -- but what's not apparent is the evil nightmare they are about to encounter. »

Antagony & Ecstacy as part of his Blockbuster History series, goes the way of British Children's Literature (thanks Harry Potter) to discuss that great adaptation of Peter Pan in 2003. He has a fair point about Jeremy Sumpter's career since and I am alarmed to note that I didn't even realize it was the same actor when he had that one season key role on Friday Night Lights.

Scanners considers the Netflix pricing dilemma and the problem of aspect ratios. This makes me crazy too. Most television screens are wider now. Why does pan & scan still exist?

The Daily What shares my favorite new photo of a movie theater. I'll share it again.

I bring this up because at last night's Captain America: The First Avengers screening there was no air conditioning in a huge warehouse size movie theater here in Manhattan and it was, shall we say, sticky and smelly. »

5 things worth bidding on in NBC's 'Friday Night Lights' prop auction

20 April 2011 6:58 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

NBC may not have gotten the first run of the final season of "Friday Night Lights," but they did get all of the props.

The network recently announced an auction of remaining of "Fnl" clothing, set pieces and paraphernalia -- with all the proceeds going to underfunded youth football programs around the country. [All together now: awwwwwwwww]

Now, we don't see any state champion rings, pairs of Eric Taylor's (Kyle Chandler) epic dad sunglasses or weekend getaways with Taylor Kitsch, but there are a few gems in there -- especially if you can get beyond the odd dilemma of whether or not to support the Panthers again.

So, in no particular order, here are 5 things we're probably already bidding on and what we plan to do with them:

1. Already one of the most active auctions, the East Dillon Lions official game calendar from their triumphant 2010 football season (seen at Buddy's, among other locations »

Blu-ray Review: Peter Pan – Updated Version of Classic Fairytale Let Down By Lack of Extras

11 April 2011 3:17 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Peter Pan is one of those quintessential fairytales that is known to every generation. Whether you were a child when Disney released their animated classic in 1951, or when Robin Williams’ adult Pan took on Dustin Hoffman’s irascible pirate in 1991’s Hook, it’s a tale known by all. P.J. Hogan’s live action version of the story is an exciting adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s classic novel and today’s Blu-ray release offers an impressive transfer of the film, but unfortunately little else for viewers. Read on for our review…

In a repressive and stilted Edwardian London and in an attempt to stave off impending adolescence, Wendy Darling (Rachel Hurd-Wood) enchants her brothers with bedtime stories of a land where children who never grow up are the heroes, where swashbuckling pirates roam the seas and the fearsome Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs) is the enemy of all who dwell there. »

Movie of the Week

The Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana

The Plot: A 16-year-old (Ronan) who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives.

The Buzz: I’m moderately excited to see Your Highness, but Hanna wins ‘movie of the week’ here, as it looks to be a better film to see on the big screen. Director David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) looks to have another great comedy on his hands in Your Highness, but if I had to pick just one to see in the theater, Hanna would be it. Steve Guttenberg & Mischa Barton Will Teach The Science Of Cool

11 March 2011 4:06 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

The 1980’s were great, weren’t they? Or rather, they weren’t, they were terrible. But as Thatcher and Reagan launched their cross-Atlantic campaign to disaffect and divide the proletariat and ingrain a cultural orthodoxy of feckless corporate greed threatened to crush the spirits of the many, the artistic output was simultaneously light, uplifting and, occasionally, uncompromisingly and militantly radical.

But of films that fell into the former categories, it was America’s many escapist comedies that now curry the warmest embers of nostalgia, and among its leading lights was Steve Guttenberg. Handsome- but not excessively so- a little cocky, but yet warm and charming, you couldn’t swing a cat around the set of a feel good American comedy without hitting Guttenberg.

Obviously, as this sort of film fell into decline, so did demand for the qualities he had to offer, but yet he remained on the periphery of theatrical feature films. »

Scream 4

Opens: April 15th 2011

Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven

Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.

Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.

Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the »

Channing Tatum teams with writer and producer for Peter Pan Begins

2 March 2011 6:28 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Fairy Tales and other literary classics are the new comic books as far as Hollywood is concerned, especially as no one has to fork out cash for the rights.

Climbing on to that already-overloaded bandwagon is a project called Peter Pan Begins, now being offered to all the studios by actor Channing Tatum (pictured above with Amanda Seyfried in romantic drama Dear John) along with screenwriter Bill Ray and producer Joe Roth.

It's familiar territory for Roth, who was involved in last year's Alice in Wonderland and the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman and is in the casting stages of Oz, The Great and Powerful.

HeatVision says details of the project are scarce and doesn't clarify Tatum's involvement, despite others presuming he will star in the title role (odd though it is to imagine him as Peter Pan).

Brad Dourif and Jeremy Sumpter Explore Death and Cremation

9 February 2011 7:58 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

What’s not to like about a horror movie that features both Brad Dourif and Jeremy Sumpter? If you’re curious as to whom the latter is specifically, I implore you investigate “The Sasquatch Gang”, a little-known bizarro comedy from one of the producers of “Napoleon Dynamite”. It’s seriously awesome. Justin Steele’s “Death and Cremation” is currently hitting the European Film Market, which means we are now privy to the film’s trailer, which, to my surprise, actually looks pretty decent. Not that I have anything against Mr. Steele and his endeavors, mind you, but the picture’s plot isn’t exactly intriguing. How many dejected teenager horror flicks do we need, anyway? Please don’t answer that, especially if you’re about to make one yourself. Here’s a quick synopsis: Jarod is a bullied and fatherless 17-year-old high school outcast. He is viewed as a freak »
