Oliver Reed as Athos in The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (Richard Lester, 1973/1974, UK):
These films were actually shot all at once but ultimately released as two separate films telling one long story. As the musketeer with a dark past, Oliver Reed provides a lot of the heart and soul in these very entertaining and well-made films. Technically, since we have to isolate one film for our fantasy nomination, it would be The Four Musketeers as his role is more prominent in that film. Reed’s reunion scene with Faye Dunaway’s Milady is superb as is Reed’s intense swordplay with an array of opponents including Christopher Lee. An underrated actor whose career was damaged by well-documented alcohol problems and notorious off-screen behavior, Reed still logged in some truly incredible acting performances over the course of his career. His portrayal of Athos is definitely one of them.

With the Academy Awards for the 2011 film year in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to take a look at one of the event’s most consistently fascinating categories: Best Supporting Actor. The most interesting story in the category this year isn’t who got nominated, it’s who didn’t. More specifically, Albert Brooks was completely robbed of a nomination for his performance as film producer turned lethal gangster Bernie Rose in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive.
As much as I’d like to say I was surprised by this, considering both the quality of performance and Brooks’ slew of nominations from other critical circles, in light of the Academy’s history of overlooking outstanding supporting performances, I simply can’t.
Following is a chronological look at a number of performances richly deserving of a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination.
In some cases, the performances are in films »

There’s no shortage of complaining about Hollywood’s over-reliance on remakes in the film blogging world, but that’s probably because there’s no shortage of new remakes being proposed either. And this latest one, it just feels like somebody’s messing with us. Variety reports that MGM is dipping into their back catalogue and pulling out The Magnificent Seven as a new starring vehicle for Tom Cruise. The Magnificent Seven was a 1960 cowboy film directed by John Sturges that starred names like Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, and Charles Bronson, and the fact that it’s being remade by MGM is especially egregious for several reasons. The most obvious of which is that the original Magnificent Seven was already a remake of sorts, as it took the plot of Akira Kurosawa’s classic 1954 film Seven Samurai and transplanted it into a Western setting. But that’s not the real reason this plan is so »

Chances are if you were born after the mid-'80s and you're not a film geek, you're probably not familiar with John Sturges' Western drama The Magnificent Seven. The 1960 film starred some of the biggest names of the day including Steven McQueen, Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, James Coburn and Eli Wallach. If you don't recognize any of those names, surely (hopefully) you recognize Elmer Bernstein's iconic score. The film itself is a remake of Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa's acclaimed The Seven Samurai, itself marked for a possible remake. Fast forward 50-plus years now and MGM has announced that Tom Cruise is attached to star in a remake of Sturges' film. Granted, this remake doesn't have a director or script, so it will be a while...

Being Catherine: HBO has grabbed a new comedy series created by Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich) that will star Catherine Keener. Kaufman will write and direct the series, which will explore one day in a woman’s life and “how the events leading up to it can affect, or not, the reality in which she lives.” Keener is also starring in the upcoming Frank or Francis, which Kaufman is directing. [Deadline] Distant Dream: MGM has “quietly” begun looking for a writer to pen a remake of John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven, which itself is an unofficial adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai. Tom Cruise is attached to star, but it’s on the back burner for the notoriously indecisive actor, so it could be years before it hits...

Tom Cruise may be approaching fifty years of age, but he shows no signs of intending to slow down. The Mission: Impossible star has a multitude of film projects on his ‘to-do’ list, and it looks like he’s just added another one – MGM’s remake of John Sturges’ classic western The Magnificent Seven.
Cruise has enjoyed a career resurgence following the massive success of Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol (some would argue that he’s never been away) and he’s capitalizing on the success of that film by attaching himself to a slew of high-profile acting gigs. However, the remake of The Magnificent Seven appears to be a long way off as the film doesn’t even have a director yet – or even a script for that matter. Now, before we get too excited about Hollywood ...

It would appear that Hollywood has essentially run out of movies to remake, because now they're starting to remake the remakes as well. This week MGM has announced that they are setting up a new version of The Magnificent Seven, the 1960 Western directed by John Sturges, which itself was a loose remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. This will join a long list of remakes already in development at MGM including Carrie, Robocop, Poltergeist and Wargames, not to mention their Red Dawn remake, which was already completed but has been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years now. While there is no writer or director attached as of yet, they do have a big star on board for the film in the form of Mr. Tom Cruise. Something tells me that will not help endear this project to fans of the original film. According to Variety, the »

With two films wrapped (one of which due out next month), another currently filming, and a slew of projects in the pipeline, Tom Cruise is more prolific and sought-after than ever.
Adding to the list of films in the works, Variety report that Cruise is attached to star in MGM’s remake of John Sturges’ 1960 classic western, The Magnificent Seven.
MGM are in the midst of developing a handful of projects from their back catalogue, including the upcoming RoboCop and Carrie remakes, as well as Poltergeist, with Sam Raimi producing; WarGames, with Seth Gordon directing; Death Wish, with Joe Carnahan directing; Valley Girl; and Red Dawn, which is due out at the end of the year.
And of course, we can’t forget that this is the studio bringing us Skyfall at the end of the year, whose first teaser trailer landed yesterday morning.

MGM studio takes advantage of its extensive back catalogue to resurrect classic 1960 western, with updates of Robocop and Carrie also on the cards
Tom Cruise is in line to star in a remake of the classic 1960 western The Magnificent Seven, according to a Variety report.
The new version is in the early stages of development at studio MGM, which is taking advantage of its extensive back catalogue to reassert itself following several years of financial travails. The studio will also deliver new versions of the Paul Verhoeven sci-fi romp Robocop and the classic Stephen King horror Carrie, both of which go into production later this year.
The Magnificent Seven was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese tale Seven Samurai. John Sturges's film featured an impressive ensemble cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz. It centred on a »

Tom Cruise is planning to develop and star in a remake of the 1960 Western classic The Magnificent Seven. Information is sketchy because the project is only in the embryonic stages. There have been various attempts to remake the film in the past, but none have borne fruit. The original film was a surprise hit and was itself a remake of Kurosawa's classic Seven Samurai. Although the film is remembered as an all-star vehicle today, at the time only Yul Brynner and Eli Wallach were considered big names. The film helped promote the young up-and-comers in the cast to major stardom including Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn and Robert Vaughn. Horst Bucholz became a star in Europe and the guy whose name nobody can remember, Brad Dexter, went on to become a successful movie producer. The film, directed by John Sturges, is also remembered for its classic theme song by Elmer Bernstein. »

MGM will begin shooting "RoboCop" and "Carrie" remakes later this year. And now comes word that the studio is also planning to remake John Sturges' 1960 Western "The Magnificent Seven," with Tom Cruise attached to star. "The Magnificent Seven," itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic "Seven Samurai," starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz as a group of American gunmen hired to protect a small Mexican village from a group of savage bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach). The 1960 film was followed by three sequels, and "The Magnificent Seven" was remade as a CBS series in 1998-2000. The project has yet to sign a director, but the search for a writer has started. »

Tom Cruise is back in the saddle again. With the superstar's career officially back on the upswing thanks to blockbuster box-office grosses for "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," the actor is now attached to star in a remake of the classic John Sturges Western "The Magnificent Seven" for MGM. While the studio doesn't yet have a director attached, they're actively searching for a writer to pen the update to the 1960 film, which was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai." According to Variety, which broke the story, the project is likely a long way off for Cruise, as he's »

Tom Cruise will top line a remake of John Sturges' 1960 western classic "The Magnificent Seven" for MGM reports Variety.
The original was itself a loose remake Akira Kurosawa's even more acclaimed 1954 "Seven Samurai" and followed seven gunfighters-for-hire tasked with protecting a small Mexican village from bandits. Three sequels and a short-lived TV series followed.
No director is onboard yet but the search for a writer is underway. Despite Cruise's interest, the actor has no immediate plans to make the film which is quite a long way off even if it goes ahead. »

Some studios buy original scripts, others develop scripts from pitches, and some studios actually go through the bother of developing films from idea to production, nursing it along the way to make sure it gets everything it needs. You know, all that hard stuff. MGM, on the other hand, would rather just remake the crap out of everything they own the rights to. With remakes of “Robocop”, “Carrie”, “Red Dawn”, “Poltergeist”, “War Games”, and “Death Wish” already on the way (or done and waiting to be release — Hello, “Red Dawn”!), the studio is now aiming their six-shooters at a remake of the Western “The Magnificent Seven”, with none other than Tom Cruise attached to star. In the Yul Brynner role, we presume. The 1960 original was directed by John Sturges, and starred Brynner as a gunfighter who recruits six other gunslingers in the Wild West to help defend a Mexican town from bandits. »

With new versions of Carrie, RoboCop and more on the way, MGM is busy making a comeback with a slew of remakes, and now one more is on the way that might cause some outcry. Variety reports the studio is looking to remake the classic 1960 western The Magnificent Seven from director John Sturges, and Tom Cruise is attached to star. However, it's important to note that there's no director on board yet, a writer is currently being found, and the project is not in Cruise's immediate future, though the actor is certainly interested. It would be the actor's first real western since Far and Away, though Last Samurai was close. The film really isn't begging for a remake, but since the western is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, I guess it's not that ridiculous of a concept. The 1960 film featured an all-star cast including Yul Brynner, Steve »

Tom Cruise is attached to MGM Studios' remake of The Magnificent Seven. The actor has been interested in the project for quite some time, but don't expect it to hit theaters anytime soon.
The studio does not have a director in place yet, although insiders claim they are quietly searching for a screenwriter. The remake is still many years away from happening, but the actor's involvement may attract filmmakers or other cast members to the project.
The Magnificent Seven, which was directed by John Sturges, was a Western remake of Akira Kurosawa's seminal classic Seven Samurai. The story centered on seven gunmen (Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz), who are hired by Mexican villagers to protect their land from the villainous Calvera (Eli Wallach).
It spawned the sequels Return of the Magnificent Seven in 1966, Guns of the Magnificent Seven in 1969, and The Magnificent Seven Ride! »

Chalk one more title up on the board marked “Remakes.” Though this one is more of the wheel of cinematic life turning, as The Magnificent Seven is itself a remake of Seven Samurai. MGM has decided to dip once more into the cupboard of title rights it owns and is now developing a new version of John Sturges' 1960 classic with Tom Cruise attached to star. This one is still at a very embryonic stage, with no director or writer attached, though Variety has heard that the company is even now kicking off the hunt for someone to scribble the script. So we don’t yet know whether it will exactly follow the plot of the original – which sees a group of American gunmen hired to protect a Mexican village from a group of bandits. There’s also no word on which of the movie’s meaty characters Cruise is interested in. »
