Jack Huston joins 'Boardwalk Empire' as a regular: Hooray for Mr. Half-Face

17 December 2010 4:45 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Boardwalk Empire fans, rejoice: Jack Huston, who plays disfigured veteran/tormented assassin/coolest-character-on-tv Richard Harrow, will join the Boardwalk Empire cast as a full-time regular for season 2, according to Deadline. With only half his face showing, Huston stole the show every time he appeared in season 1. It’s great to hear that he’ll continue to be a part of the show…although we should be cautious about this news. Michael Stuhlbarg is nominally a “regular” on Boardwalk, but as Arnold Rothstein, he was maybe in one scene per episode for the vast majority of season 1. So while we’re »

‘The Fighter’ & ‘The King’s Speech’ Lead Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees

16 December 2010 10:09 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Today the nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was released. The King’s Speech and The Fighter received the most nominations, with four each. Thankfully the Guild seems to know what they are doing unlike The Golden Globes who pretty much screwed up all the nominations.

The nominees here are usually a very strong indication of how the acting award nominees will play out at the Oscars. King’s Speech has long been an Oscar favourite, but David O. Russell’s The Fighter has gained considerable steam in the past few weeks. Last year, 19 out of 20 SAG nominees went to the Oscars as well so you can be sure that The Fighter and King’s Speech will get a best picture nomination. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 20th. See the complete list below.

17th Annual SAG Awards Nominations

16 December 2010 8:03 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

The Screen Acors Guild has released their award nominations for their upcoming 17th annual award ceremony, which will take place on January 30, 2011.

There are some great nominations here.  My favorite picks include Christian Bale for his role in The FighterNatalie Portman in her role in Black Swan, and Jesse Eisenberg for his role in The Social Network. As much as I love most of these films, I'm surprised that Inception is no where to be seen. That was one of the best films of the year and it seems to be escaping a lot of the nominations in all the award ceremonies this year.

Check out the list of Film and TV nominations below and tell us what your favorite are!

SAG Nominees Announced - Chris Colfer Up for Lifetime Achievement Award

16 December 2010 7:12 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Okay, totally kidding about the Colfer Lifetime Achievement Award thing - that will be going to Ernest Borgnine. But does it seem to you that the kid who plays Kurt Hummel is getting an awful lot of awards season love? (And wouldn't McHale's Navy have been so much better with him in it?)

The latest outpouring of Colfer acclaim comes from the Screen Actors Guild who announced their 17th annual SAG nominees this morning.

The Glee cast is up for a comedy ensemble award, but Colfer was the only cast member other than Jane Lynch to be recognized individually. And given who he's up against he's almost certain to be the frontrunner!

Another bit of good news for a Glbt favorite, The Kids Are All Right, scored individual acting nods for Annete Bening, Mark Rufallo, and also a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees Announced & It’s Less “Colorful” Than The Golden Globes

16 December 2010 6:44 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.

Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.

The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.

But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.

Set Photos Of Chloe Moretz And Ben Kingsley From Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret

8 December 2010 2:24 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When you consider who the director is, we've heard and seen very little about Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret. In fact, we haven't written an article directly about the movie since Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg were added to the cast back in July. A family film from the director of Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, it's hard to know what to expect from the project, but now we have a few set photos to guide us. Posted on the Hugo Cabret Facebook page, the snapshots give us our first look at Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley, and Sasha Baron Cohen in their decidedly bizarre costumes. I'm not quite familiar with the book that the film's based on, written by Brian Selznick, but I'm sure there's a reason behind the the incredible number of hairclips and handlebar mustaches. Martin Scorsese's latest film, Hugo Cabret, is shaping up quite nicely. Releasing in about a year, and of course in 3D, the film is starting to look pretty good. A lot of it has to do with the stellar cast Scorsese has assembled. Ya, we know, quite the cast. Today, we get a couple new pictures (of Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Kingsley) and an on set video. Check it out below and let us know what you think. »

First Look: Sacha Baron Cohen & Ben Kingsley In ‘Hugo Cabret’

8 December 2010 10:42 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Almost exactly one year from today, we'll all get our chance to see a 3D [1] Martin Scorsese movie. But there won't be any baseball bat beatings or vice head squishing in this film. Based on the book [2] by Brian Selznick, Hugo Cabret is about a young boy (Asa Butterfield) who secretly lives in a Paris train station and winds up on a magical adventure. The incredible cast also includes Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron CohenBen Kingsley, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Emily Mortimer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Helen McCrory, Frances de la Tour and Richard Griffiths. We've already seen a glimpse of what Moretz and Butterfield's [3] lead characters look like and now we've got a peak at two of the important characters who work in the train station, played by Cohen and Kingsley. Hugo Cabret is scheduled for release in 3D on December 9, 2011. Check out the full images and more after the break. »

Margaret's Irish up, Jimmy's down, Nucky's odd man out on Boardwalk Empire, some thoughts

The original Bernie Madoff, Charles Ponzi of Boston is referenced in tonight's outstanding episode of "Boardwalk Empire." Harry Prince (Michael Badalucco) Belle's sugar daddy is ruined by Ponzi, who suckered him for his entire net worth. Belle is out of the concubine apartments, and hits up Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) first, then Nucky (Steve Buscemi) for dough. Bad timing for her as Margaret walks in on Nucky touching Belle in a familiar way that enrages her to the point of an eventual abandoning of Nucky, more on that later.Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) is la la la-ing to his lawyer, accused of being too sangfroid in light of the allegations about his doings with the "Black Sox" scandal. Scorsese on ‘Hugo Cabret’ In 3D: “Every Shot Is Rethinking Cinema”

21 November 2010 4:31 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

In a fascinating interview with Kermode at the Guardian, director Martin Scorsese has revealed some insight on his first 3D feature, Hugo Cabret. While the article is much more about his life and passion for cinema, there are a few tidbits below. I highly recommend heading over to the site for the full interview though.

The film is adaptation of the children’s book by Brian Selznick, set in 1930′s Paris and follows “an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station [who] is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and a robot.” Here is Scorsese’s quote:

TV Review: Boardwalk Empire – Episode 9: “Belle Femme”

19 November 2010 4:54 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Hannibal loves it when a plan comes together. I, however, love it when plot threads come together, and that’s finally started to happen in “Belle Femme”: Jimmy’s misdeeds finally catch up with him when Agent Van Alden decides to pay him a visit, after an awkward reunion with his wife; Nucky makes necessary sacrifices and plans for the future; Margaret exploits the new found power she has over Nucky, and becomes a key player in said plans; and Rothstein forges an alliance that threatens to topple Nucky’s empire.

There were plenty of surprises in this episode, with a certain minor player committing a serious betrayal, and Luciano having the tables turned on him by Jimmy’s mother (the ever-spunky Gretchen Mol). The episode had a real feeling that the plot was actually significantly progressing, which is something many previous instalments had severely been lacking.

Boardwalk Empire 1.08 "Hold Me in Paradise" Review

8 November 2010 5:31 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

One of the things I love most about Boardwalk Empire is the way it seamlessly integrates history into its narrative.  Whether it's the Black Sox scandal or the Harding Presidency, we are living and breathing this time intimately with our characters, and that makes every moment seem more poignant and alive.

"Hold Me in Paradise" was filled with more maneuvering than action, but that didn't make it any less entertaining or relevant.  Relevant because much of 1.08 showed us that however things may change, things really do stay the same, especially when it comes to politics.  It was the political machinations led by Nucky (Steve Buscemi) that sealed Harding's nomination (a womanizer and, according to Nucky, rather a tool) after the convention became deadlocked.  Harding's "Return to Normalcy" campaign was an attempt at steering government away from reform and back towards favoritism of the elite establishment (and away from new immigrants »
