The strange history of the Die Hard movies

9 December 2014 5:13 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Die Hard series may be alive and well, but there's a unique story behind the writing of each one…

As any action fanatic will tell you, Die Hard is among the best films of its type ever made. Tautly directed by John McTiernan, deceptively well shot by cinematographer Jan de Bont, and full of charismatic turns from Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman and Bonnie Bedelia, it’s seldom been bettered, even by its sequels.

The key to the first film's success, and the sequels in their best moments, is hero John McClane. Tough, sarcastic but ultimately human and relatable, he cuts a very different figure from the beefed-up, larger-than-life heroes of 1980s and 90s action cinema. When John McClane gets shot or injured, he actually feels pain. It's something we were keenly aware of in the 1988 original, but gradually ebbed away as the Die Hard franchise drifted from thriller territory »

This is the previously untitled sci-fi script that the studio snapped up in July from screenwriter Joe Gazzam, who sold action-thriller Shadow Run to Sony and is scripting the Cliffhanger remake for Neal Moritz and StudioCanal. Story tracks Tyler Vaughn, a test subject in a quantum experiment who’s sent four days into the future, only to discover his son has been killed and he’s been fingered for the murder. When the day ends, he’s pulled back one day prior and realizes he must solve the mystery of his son’s death as he jumps backward, one day at a time, to stop it from happening on the day of the initial experiment.

Double Review: Deadly Eyes & Leviathan (Blu-ray)

6 September 2014 9:34 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Scream Factory recently gifted us genre fans a double dose of creature feature terrors with their Blu-ray releases of the killer rat flick Deadly Eyes and George P. Cosmatos’ hugely underrated deep sea horror film Leviathan.  While both films aren’t necessarily well-known amongst more casual fans, it’s great to see Scream put such great effort into their presentations for each of these cult classics.

For those who haven’t seen it before, Deadly Eyes (or Rats)is a rather ridiculous (but wonderfully so) early ‘80s nature-run-amok story that plays up the concerns and dangers of modern urban society by way of roided-out killer rat infestations that have a penchant for human flesh. The film takes its premise very seriously, but it’s the use of Daschunds in rat costumes that has given Deadly Eyes something of an unintentional comedic spin, making for a rather uneven horror film.

The Indiana Jones films that never were

30 January 2014 2:44 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature Simon Brew 31 Jan 2014 - 07:04

There are currently four Indiana Jones movies, and some might say that's one too many. But what about the Indy movies that never were?

For a new Indiana Jones movie to go forward, it requires a degree of agreement amongst three people who don't seem to have a habit of agreeing very much. Basically, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford and George Lucas all have to say yes, else the project stalls, and a different approach is taken.

As a consequence of this, there's a trail of unmade Indiana Jones films that failed to get the necessary unanimous agreement. The ingredients of some of them would find their way into others, and some ideas would never be returned to. Here then is a whistle-stop tour of the Indiana Jones movies that never were...
