The CW and Range Sports have formed a partnership for strategy, sales and programming services for the network’s original sports programming lineup.
The teaming will see Range Sports develop and build new content and event franchises. It will encompass programs, branded content, property sales, media rights advisory, and IP rights for brands for both national and local market activations. Range Sports will also tap into parent Range Media Partners’ talent representation, brand consulting, data and analytics, and premium scripted and nonscripted production capabilities through Range Studios.
Nexstar Media Group acquired a 75% stake in The CW in 2022, with Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global remaining minority partners. Under Nexstar, The CW has increasingly prioritized sports, acquiring rights to Acc college football and basketball, Liv Golf, and soon WWE Nxt. The network is aiming to soon offer 500 hours of sports programming a year.

The CW Network has teamed with Range Sports to develop new content and event franchises as the broadcast network expands its menu of live sports and related content. The move into college-level and progressional sports is as part of a larger strategy shift for CW under owner Nexstar Media Group.
The agreement calls for Range Sports, a unit of management-production startup Range Media Partners, to work with CW Sports and Nexstar brass on new sports-related programs and branded content as well as to advise on rights deals on the national level and in local markets for CW affiliates. Range Sports also promises to use the resources of the Range Media to help CW with talent representation, brand consulting, data and analytics and provide production capabilities for scripted and unscripted programs.

More layoffs are underway at The CW, Variety has confirmed.
Sources say that over a dozen people have been let go from the network, mostly in the marketing and finance divisions. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, those released this time were supposed to be part of an initial round of cuts that took place late last year, but ongoing projects or remaining time on their contracts meant they were not let go until today.
This marks the latest layoffs at the broadcast network since Nexstar acquired a majority stake in it in October 2022. As Variety exclusively reported in November, between 30-40 staffers were laid off shortly after the deal closed, including longtime network communications head Paul Hewitt. Those came after network head Mark Pedowitz stepped down along with several other senior executives.

Nexstar Media has spent months assembling a massive roster of TV stations; acquiring TV’s CW network; and building the NewsNation cable-news oulet. Now comes the hard part: Getting Madison Avenue to buy ads across all of it.
The nation’s largest owner of local TV outlets is ready to make its pitch to advertisers and has already scheduled a presentation for media buyers in New York for April 25. The goal, says Michael Strober, the company’s chief revenue officer, is to showcase the company’s reach among both national and local media. “We can bring local and national to our clients in ways that have never been replicated across the country,” he says in an interview. “The CW, NewsNation, TheHill, Nexstar Digital and over 200 local stations — that to me is our differentiator in the marketplace.”

The CW is hoping advertisers will take another swing at its unorthodox new golf tournament if it offers some different ways of doing transactions that involve it.
The network, recently brought under control of Nexstar Media Group, will work with iSpot.TV, one of a handful of new providers of audience-measurement technologies, to measure the effectiveness of commercials attached to linear and digital broadcasts of tournaments backed by Liv Golf, the upstart league financed by Saudi Arabia. CW is to air 14 global Liv Golf League live events in 2023 and will stream the events live on its app. Weekend tournaments will air live on Saturdays and Sundays on the linear network, and stream online Fridays.
“With this unprecedented integration of experiential omnichannel activations across digital and linear, as well as traditional and offline channels, we needed a measurement provider who could keep pace with our innovative approach to consumer monetization and we found one in iSpot,...

Even though Taye Diggs’ character Coach Billy Baker died in the latest episode of CW series “All American,” creator, executive producer and showrunner, Nkechi Okoro Carroll says the actor could reprise his role in some form in the future.
At the end of Season 4, Carroll and Diggs mutually decided what Billy’s fate would be. “I have ongoing conversations with all of my cast every season, so there’s nothing that ever comes out of the blue,” said Carroll, who added that she knew she wouldn’t be able to hold onto Diggs for several more seasons. They both agreed that the character and Diggs’ time on the show was fulfilled.
“We never had any delusions that we’d be able to hold onto Taye for 12 seasons or anything like that,” Carroll told TheWrap. “I was just like, ‘Whenever the time comes where it feels like the character has served his purpose,...

Strober will be responsible for “leading the reimagination and execution of a new advertising sales and go-to-market strategy for the company,” according to the official announcement. Strober will report to CEO Perry Sook, and will start in his new role next January 2.
The company’s acquisition of The CW, completed in October, led to the expected exits of several top-level executives at the broadcast network, including longtime CEO Mark Pedowitz. As Deadline has reported, Nexstar’s plans to install a Cro have been expected to have an impact on the network’s sales department, which...
