The Trust review: “A dark, twisted and fun thrill ride”

The Trust review: Nicolas Cage returns to the screen opposite Elijah Wood in this dark comedy that debut feature directors Alex and Benjamin Brewer.

The Trust review by Awais Irfan, May 2016.

The Trust review

After a whole string of bad films, from Outcast to Left Behind to The Runner, the once-great Nicolas Cage really needed a good role in a good film to perhaps give him sort of redemption and show the world that not all hope is lost with his career. His latest project, the bad-cop crime film The Trust is just that; taking him back to his Leaving Las Vegas roots, this slick and competent thriller is Cage’s first good film since 2013’s remarkable Joe – a dark, twisted and fun thrill ride.

When police officer Jim Stone (Nicolas Cage) notices an unusually high bail receipt for a drugs bust, he begins to devise a plan to find »

Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood Are Bumbling Bad Cops in 'The Trust' Trailer

9 March 2016 8:45 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

"The Trust" already seems like a perfect buddy cop movie, with the cops -- played by Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood -- being bored officers who attempt to rob a vault at the back of a grocery store. What could go wrong?

The first trailer and poster were just released, ahead of the movie's premiere at SXSW. The poster makes it look like a potentially serious thriller, but the trailer strikes a comedic tone -- and hopefully the film follows suit, because the comedy of Cage being Crazy Cage and Wood being Innocent Big-Eyed Elijah is already so beautiful. They just work together, especially when they're not quite working well with others.

Cage plays Jim Stone, with Wood as David Waters. Here's the synopsis, via Flickering Myth:

"Waters and Stone are two nobody police officers working dull administrative jobs and making extra money selling stolen Civil Service Exams to other officers. »

Bad cops make the best criminals. At least, that’s according to the one-sheet for The TrustAlex Brewer and Ben Brewer’s soon-to-be-released dramedy that is on its way to SXSW 2016.

Accompanying the poster below is the first action-packed trailer for the flick, revealing a shotgun blast of Hollywood big names (Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood) along with musicians-cum-actors (Sky Ferreira). Kevin WeismanSteven Williams and Jerry Lewis complete the ensemble.

Toplining the Brewers’ feature film as two loose-limbed Vegas cops are Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood, who play fast and loose with the law after stumbling upon a precious bank vault during a drugs bust. Didn’t we say something about immoral men in blue making good criminals?

The Trust will make its worldwide bow at SXSW 2016, which is due to descend on Austin, Texas over the coming days. From there, expect Alex Brewer and Ben Brewer’s »

Nicolas Cage, Elijah Wood, and Jerry Lewis Form an Unlikely Trio In Trailers for ‘The Trust’

8 March 2016 9:36 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

All right, yes, it’s been some time since a Nicolas Cage-starrer was worth giving one’s attention to, and the basic set-up for Trust isn’t all that different from those numerous films we’ve ignored in years past — yet the first preview and basic credentials suggest something a cut above. My basic interest might come down to the very odd lineup of stars: along with Cage, Elijah Wood, musician Sky Ferreira, and Jerry Lewis (!) are making turns herein. By the looks of it, the material won’t be a total waste of that considerable talent.

As directed by music-video-cum-feature-directors Alex and Ben Brewer and co-written by Adam Hirsch, the Vegas-set comedy concerns two loose-limbed cops who decide to rob a drug dealer’s cash-filled vault. It would seem things eventually go wrong, as should be expected, but trailer is mostly humor-oriented — and none too bad on that count, »
