Born in rural Kentucky she and her family relocated to Brooklyn where her father worked as a businessman. Following her high school graduation she was recommended to partake in a singing contest held by a local radio station from friends and was so successful that she worked professionally as a singer during the Second World War during which she was discovered. After breaking into films in 1946 she was often cast as best friends, starlets, good girls, and secretaries in a three decade film and TV career. After leaving films in the 1960s, she spent her life dedicated to family and religious causes.

Graduated from New Utrecht High School, Brooklyn, New York in 1939.
She has a sharp memory in her old age, which is thought to derive from her love of jigsaw puzzles.
She is a fan of the television shows Murder, She Wrote (1984), The Golden Girls (1985), and Touched by an Angel (1994).
She was raised Roman Catholic but converted to Christian Science in 1956. She remained a strict adherent following her conversion and refrained from smoking, drinking, and doctor visits.
She was singing at the famed Stork Club around Christmas 1944 where she was spotted by a talent scout who brought her to Hollywood in January 1945 to begin her career in motion pictures.
She is the mother of two daughters and a son.
Not to be confused with the television personality Martha Stewart.
She was a vocalist with the Glenn Miller Band.
