3D for Robin Hood, Jackass, and Star Wars?

27 December 2009 1:31 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Expensive three-dimensional technology seems to be paying off for James Cameron’s Avatar, which topped a competitive Christmas weekend and is wowing audiences worldwide.  This naturally has Hollywood types looking through dollar sign pupils at their upcoming releases and stroking their beards at how to replicate that success.

Though Avatar was shot in 3D from the beginning, an increasing number of executives are seeing the benefit of spending the extra $8 million for at least a post-production conversion to three dimensions.  It’s not just in the premium pricing either.  In a time when theaters are under siege from piracy and the possibility of on-demand, as well as a struggling DVD market, there’s value in luring audiences back to stadium seating and sticky floors.

TheWrap.com’s Sharon Waxman wrote a great article about the 3D mania sweeping the town, naming a few titles that may be getting the new experience. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Jackass 3D

21 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

All I can say is oh dear I am not sure I want to watch Jackass in 3D. The third installment of Jackass from Paramount Pictures and MTV Films will hit theaters on October 15, 2010, this time in eye-popping 3D. Johnny Knoxville and the boys will begin shooting in late January with Dickhouse Production’s Jeff Tremaine at the helm and producing alongside Spike Jonze and Knoxville.

The addition of 3D to the new film will raise the mayhem factor to new heights, promises star/producer Johnny Knoxville.  “We're going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O's butt. We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension.”

2002’s “Jackass: The Movie” earned more than more than $64 million and was heralded as “a disgusting, repulsive, grotesque spectacle, but also hilarious and provocative. God help me, thumbs up” by esteemed critic Richard Roeper. »

Avatar technology being used for new Jackass movie

21 December 2009 5:02 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

James Cameron's Avatar has created new filming techniques and heralded a new age of storytelling and artistic endeavors. And it's being used to film evolution's little mistakes getting hit in the beanbag with a golf club.

MTV's Jackass will reportedly take Cameron's film techniques and implement them into Jackass 3D, the third movie installment based on the popular TV stunt comedy show.

The show's chief jackass, Johnny Knoxville, said in a press release that they would use the technology to take the camera where no camera has gone before: "up Steve-o's butt." I'm sure a 3D version of that will do wonders for Milk Duds sales at the concession stand.

'Jackass 3-D' Taking Stupid to "Whole New Dimension"

20 December 2009 3:36 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We heard a couple weeks ago I guess that Jackass would be back in theaters next fall, and that the plan was to make it in 3-D. There's a "why not" aspect to that; the Jackass movies cost under $20 million combined and generated over $150 million put together. With 3-D becoming very trendy and not terribly expensive anymore, this would add another gimmick to the freak show. MUE7VTCUFP3B

Now Johnny Knoxville confirms the 3-D news, in his own inimitable way. "We're going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O's butt," Knoxville delicately said in a statement. "We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension.” »

It’s Official: Jackass 3D is Real and Arriving in Theaters October 15, 2010!

A little over a month ago, word got out that Paramount was making another Jackass movie.  But unlike the first two very successful films, the third installment was going to be released in 3D.  Well, thanks to an official press release that I just got from Paramount, not only is Jackass 3D happening, they’ve set on a release date and it’s October 15, 2010.

According to star/producer Johnny Knoxville,  “we’re going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O’s butt. We’re taking stupid to a whole new dimension.”

Also, according to the press release, Johnny Knoxville and the boys will begin shooting in late January with Dickhouse Production’s Jeff Tremaine directing and producing alongside Spike Jonze and Knoxville.

Even thought the Hollywood tradepapers confirmed rumors earlier this month that Jackass 3D would begin filming on January 25th 2010, Paramount andMTV Films have apparently sent out a press release officially announcing the project.  The funniest part is a quote from Jackass star Johnny Knoxville, who claims that with Jackass 3D, "We're going to take the same 3D technology James Cameron used in Avatar and stick it up Steve O's butt. We're taking stupid to a whole new dimension.” Although I doubt they will be using any of performance capture, and especially not the technology that Cameron helped engineer. It is also doubtful that they will be using the Pace 3D camera system that Cameron co-created, as it is just too heavy and difficult for an on the run mobile production. I'm sure the new Jackass sequel will employ a new consumer 3d handheld like the unnamed Panasonic "3D Full »

'American Gladiators' And 'Jackass' Bring Their Stunts To 3-D

20 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

As long as Hollywood is turning board games into movies, why not also mine game shows? I'd love to see movies made out of "Press Your Luck" and that Japanese show where contestants had to guess what dangerous animal was atop their head. In a way, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" has already been turned into a movie ("Slumdog Millionaire"), and now a producer of "300" is bringing "American Gladiators" to the big screen.

Scott Mednick, also an executive producer of this fall's "Where the Wild Things Are," has hired "Point Break" screenwriter Peter Iliff to script the previously announced adaptation of the physical competition series as a movie that, Variety says, will "feature the Herculean characters as superheroes." But will amateur athletes be cast as the villains? It would certainly be appropriate to the format of the show, which involved everyday contenders battling the gigantic male and female Gladiators »
