Original concept for Shrek was dark and low-budget, but it later became a blockbuster and animation history. Shrek is one of the most popular movie franchises, competing with Disney and other major studios. Fifth installment of Shrek with original cast and a Donkey spinoff movie are currently in development.
A week after the original test animation for Shrek surfaced online, another unrecognizable throwback to the Mike Myers-voiced ogre has been unveiled. While the test animation was thought lost for more than 20 years, someone who has been holding onto a piece of the Dreamworks history is artist Mike Ploog. Best known as the co-creator of Marvel Comics' Ghostrider and Man-Thing, among others, Ploog also created original designs for Shrek, which are almost identical in appearance to his look in the newly surfaced test footage.

The original test animation for Shrek from 1995, with Chris Farley as the voice of the titular character, has been discovered and shared online after over 20 years. The early concept of Shrek was different from the final version that became a big-budget blockbuster and a popular franchise in animation history. There are currently two projects in development within the Shrek universe: a fifth installment of the main saga with the original cast, and a potential spinoff movie centered on the character of Donkey.

Shrek was the first film in the franchise and won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Shrek's success positioned DreamWorks Animation as Pixar's main competition and spawned spinoffs and sequels. The Adventures of Puss in Boots serves as a prequel to the Shrek movies and remains one of DreamWorks' most successful streaming efforts.
Given the sheer amount of short films and spinoffs, figuring out how to watch the Shrek franchise in order can be surprisingly tough. For starters, viewers of the fairy-tale send-up can either watch the films, shorts, and series in release order or in a more narrative-driven, chronological order. Based on William Steig's picture book of the same name, the original 2001 Shrek kicked off the franchise in a memorable fashion, becoming the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature winner. Bolstered by its tongue-in-cheek humor and defining voice-over performances, Shrek was one of the year's best films — period.

The Shrek movie series saw the title ogre meet a variety of characters, of which some are now some of the most memorable ones in the whole franchise, even if some of them only appeared once. Back in 2001, DreamWorks brought the computer-animated fantasy movie Shrek, based on the 1990s children’s picture book of the same name by William Steig. With some changes to make it more family-friendly, Shrek ended up parodying fairy tales and their movie adaptations, particularly those by Disney, and it became a massive success thanks to its story and characters, which were unlike those of previous fairy tale movies.

The Shrek saga is known for its comedic style, but Shrek 5 should embrace the franchise’s roots and go full horror. Back in 2001, when Disney was still the dominant force in the world of animation, DreamWorks brought Shrek, which challenged the conventional image of fairy tales by giving them a twist and adding more humor to them. Shrek was a massive success and even took the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but most importantly, it made way for a franchise with sequels, short films, spinoffs, and more.

Starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek was made by DreamWorks Animation, a company that Steven Spielberg co-founded. But before the inception of that famous animation studio, near the turn of the decade in 1991, he bought the rights to a children’s book called Shrek!, written by William Steig. And despite moving onto other projects as the decade went by, Spielberg nonetheless had a vision in mind for the now-famous animated feature.
He wanted Bill Murray to play the titular ogre, while Steve Martin was his first choice for Donkey. That wouldn’t be the cast he moved forward with for the short time that Spielberg actually worked on the project. But with the director’s penchant for adding scenes to screenplays and storyboards in tandem with the vastly disparate voices in the lead roles, imagining Shrek through the family-oriented, adventure-packed lens of Spielberg’s directorial vision nonetheless makes for an intriguing prospect.

The 2001 Dreamworks hit Shrek has many memorable characteristics that led to its immense fame and popularity, and one of these aspects is its absolutely amazing soundtrack. Shrek is an animated film based on a children's book by William Steig which has now become a film franchise with four main films and two spin-off movies. The film tells the story of Shrek, an antisocial ogre who, without meaning to, becomes the knight in shining armor that his kingdom needs.
Despite being unconventional for its time, Shrek saw great success upon its release and became a world-famous film franchise because of it. In fact, Shrek's uniqueness is what made it stand out against other animated films and this includes its indie soundtrack. The first Shrek film has a soundtrack that includes a variety of well-known songs that perfectly fit the ambiance of the film from Smashmouth's "All-Star" and "I'm a Believer" cover to Rufus Wainwright's "Hallelujah.

Among various generations, Shrek has become one of the most iconic animated films of all time, but apart from just making its mark on audiences, the movie also made a significant impact on the film industry as a whole. Shrek is a 2001 Dreamworks film about a grouchy ogre who, in an attempt to save his swamp, falls in love with an unlikely princess and saves the kingdom. The original movie became so successful that it spawned three sequels and a spin-off film series.
Shrek has stood out among other fairytale-esque stories even before its development into a film. William Steig's children's book, "Shrek!", which inspired the 2001 film, caught the eye of many critics and creators because of its unorthodox approach to the fairytale and the typical hero protagonist. In this way, the story of Shrek has impacted audiences because of its refusal to adhere to the norm and its fun,...

The iconic 2001 film Shrek was one of Dreamworks' first big hits in the early 2000s, however, the franchise about a grumpy green ogre wasn't always going to look how it did upon release because the original director, Steven Spielberg, had many different plans for the story. Shrek tells the story of an antisocial ogre who saves a princess in order to keep his swamp from being destroyed. The film includes stars such as Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz and has spawned a franchise of four films and two spin-offs.
Unlike other animated films of the time, Shrek broke the mold by defying the stereotypical fairytale trope and introducing an antihero who preferred to be selfish rather than selfless. Furthermore, the film included a cast of characters that were just as unlikely and nontraditional as Shrek and who helped flesh out the strange, hilarious world of the film. Shrek's...

The Shrek franchise has explored beloved fairytales that most audiences know and love, but as it turns out, the ogre himself is also based on a story, though not many have actually heard of it before. Shrek is a Dreamworks animated film following an antisocial ogre who goes on a quest to save a princess with the help of a talkative donkey. The 2001 film became a franchise with four films in total and two spin-offs.
Among the many eccentric characters in Shrek there are those who are recognizable as treasured fairytale characters, although they are not always as sweet as they appeared in childhood stories. For example, Shrek 2's Fairy Godmother isn't very generous, and The Gingerbread Man plays roles both small and large in this world of storybook creatures. However, when it comes to Shrek's protagonist, the leading ogre is very similar to how he was originally depicted by William Steig.

Nicolas Cage missed out on a very profitable animated film series when he turned down the chance to voice Shrek in the 2001 computer-animated comedy. DreamWorks studio chief Jeffrey Katzenberg began developing Shrek in 1995 and initially offered the role of its lead protagonist to his friend Nicolas Cage. The frightful appearance of the giant ogre led some to speculate that Cage passed on the role out of vanity, but Cage has since revealed the real reason for turning down what has become one of the most iconic animated characters of all time.
Shrek, which parodies a number of fairy tale adaptations, is loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 children’s picture book of the same name. The animated comedy tells the story of an embittered ogre who, with the help of Donkey, rescues a princess in order to regain control of his swamp from Duloc's tyrannical ruler and Shrek villain Lord Farquaad.

Vicky Jenson's and Andrew Adamson's 2001 film "Shrek," loosely based on a twisted children's book by William Steig, was released as a direct criticism of the fairy tale tropes and clichés popularized by Disney-produced animated films like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and "Beauty and the Beast." While ultimately friendly and huggable, the title character was presented as gross and off-putting; he loves mud and filth, lives in a bog, picks his nose, farts. He is a literal ogre. Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) would ultimately find himself on his own hero's journey to rescue a princess (Cameron Diaz) on the back...

The 74th Academy Awards, which honored films from 2001, was historic in many ways. Whoopi Goldberg would host the ceremony on March 24, 2002, for her fourth time. Denzel Washington became just the second black actor to win a lead trophy. It was for his villainous cop in “Training Day” — 8 years after Sidney Poitier became the first for his handyman in 1963’s “Lilies of the Field.” Halle Berry also broke down a barrier by becoming the first-ever black actress to win an Oscar as a lead, portraying a single mother in “Monster’s Ball.”
It was also the debut of the Best Animated Feature category. As Goldberg explained on air, “In recognition to their steadily growing importance to the motion picture arts, the academy has added a category honoring animated feature films. Bambi, who is now in an assisted living facility in Palm Springs, has been lobbying for this for years. I proudly...

Universal and Illumination founder and CEO, Chris Meledandri are taking a nostalgic walk down memory with a plan to give ‘Shrek’ and the ‘Puss in Boots’ spin-off a minor reboot.
Whilst the aim is to reboot the franchise to appeal to a whole new generation, Meledandri hopes to bring back some of the original voice cast. It was the cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas that made the green ogre and friends so palatable.

The Shrek franchise is returning, with reboot efforts planned for not only the green ogre, but Puss in Boots.
Shrek has been in a bit of a slumber for the better part of a decade, hard as it might be to believe. The ultra-successful animated film franchise, which later became the platform for a multimedia pop culture blitz, notably spawning spinoff Puss in Boots, last focused on its main character in the fourth film, 2010’s Shrek Forever After. Yet, an untitled Shrek 5 was planned as recently as last year, until it wasn’t – and now we know why. A franchise reboot is nigh!

On the surface, it sounds like one of those true-life, triumph-over-adversity tearjerkers that Hollywood spoon-feeds folks with numbing frequency. But thankfully, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot approaches the cliff of sentiment without going over the edge. Based on the 1989 memoir by Portland, Oregon cartoonist John Callahan, the film traces what happens when this party-hard, skirt-chasing boozehound is rendered a wheelchair-bound quadriplegic by an alcohol-fueled car accident. His journey from wallowing in despair to becoming a successful satirical cartoonist makes the usual stops at physical therapy sessions and work-the-program meetings,...

All the way back in 2001, DreamWorks Animation hit a perfect home run with Shrek. The loose adaptation of William Steig’s picture book of the same name caught the imagination of a generation of children and adults alike, and spawned a multi-billion dollar, multimedia franchise spanning 16 years and counting. The Shrek universe now comprises of four feature films, one spinoff film, six short films, two television specials, one television series, one stage musical, 12 video games, and a range of themed attractions around the world. Now, after a number of years of teasing, we finally have a solid update on the status of Shrek 5.
The screenwriter of the movie, Michael McCullers (Saturday Night Live), was recently talking to The Hollywood Reporter about his current release, The Boss Baby. During that conversation, he explained that his script for Shrek 5 is complete, and the film is in development following some corporate-level re-shuffling.

In 2001, Shrek became a phenomenon. It was a huge blockbuster that put DreamWorks Animation on the map. And it proved that animated family films could be just as fun for adults as children, if not more so. And Mike Myers was championed for his Scottish brogue as the title character. We almost can't image anyone else bringing this big green friendly monster to life. But it almost didn't happen that way. One of Mike Myers' Saturday Night Live co-stars was originally supposed to play the role. And now we get a taste of just how different it may have been.

The Croods is the latest feature from DreamWorks Animation. But what does the future hold for the studio? Mark takes a look...
Arch your left eyebrow, for a moment. Good. Now, tilt your head to the side. I'll leave the smile up to you, but you must either smirk or give a big cheesy grin. You're now on your way to looking a lot like the DreamWorks Face, the expression that used to appear in pretty much every DreamWorks Animation film, usually on a talking animal of some description.
The thing is, in the past, all of DreamWorks' movies were comedies. It's since the studio has branched out into other genres, while retaining their sense of humour, that we've started sitting up and taking notice again.
For a while there, it looked like DreamWorks Animation had turned into the very corporate machine that it set out to lampoon: Disney.

Scholastic continues its enjoyable line of children’s tales with this entry into the Storybook Line. Similar to its predecessors, celebrities lend their most pitch-perfect, optimistic voices to each story. This particular collection features the current Hollywood quirky girl Zooey Deschanel and a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania who defined an era of makeup and leather, the unsurpassed Tim Curry.
With this foray into educational videos, Scholastic tackles stories about “following your dreams.” Young audiences are bound to find inspiration in the five selected pieces, from William Steig’s inconsistent but still effective Brave Irene to Shana Corey’s delightful Players in Pigtails. The former follows the dramatic, even harrowing journey of a girl braving a snowstorm to make a special delivery to the duchess for her sick dressmaking mother. The latter centers on the punchy Katie Casey, who wants to play baseball in 1942. Unfortunately, it just isn’t allowed...

Here at Tmp I’ve had a couple articles dealing with books and movie adaptations. Inevitably one of the comments I always get on these articles say something to the effect of “I didn’t even know that was based off a book!” Sometimes those adaptations can sneak up on you and unless you really watch the credits you would never know. So I’ve compiled a list of movies you most likely didn’t know were based off of books.
And just because, I’ve thrown in a couple that are actually based off of comic books.
The Neverending Story
This classic children’s story is still one of my favorite movies. While the effects are now dated, the fantasy film remains a timeless story that just about anyone can relate to. It started life as a German fantasy novel by Michael Ende and helped spawn the first two...

Amanda Holden got to leave the Britain’s Got Talent judging table for a few minutes tonight, as she and the cast of Shrek performed on the huge stage during the results show.
We were kind of shocked by the performance, having previously insisted that the actress had no real talent of her own we had to eat our words as she sang I’m A Believer and was actually quite tuneful.
In fact, we would go as far as to suggest she was probably more in key than Cheryl Cole during her last X Factor performance, though in fairness she didn’t have the energetic dance routine to contend with.
After the performance, Simon Cowell addressed the performers and grudgingly praised his fellow judge saying:
Can I start with the one on the right, you were actually a better singer than your wife.
But I have to say, this is really,...

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I" is now the biggest "Harry Potter" opening of all time, having smashed box office records with a magical $125 million domestically.
The film -- which follows Harry, Hermione and Ron as they leave the comforts of Hogwarts to search for ways to destroy the evil wizard Lord Voldemort -- surpassed the series' previous best, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," which opened in 2005 with $102 million.

It looks like John Stevenson will not be working with DreamWorks again for a long time, if at all. Today Stevenson announced the upcoming projects that he is working on with Vanguard Films.
John Stevenson has signed a producing/directing pact with Vanguard Films, and has begun work on directing Alien Rock Band for Vanguard. Rock Band is a mix of live-action and CGI that follows a garage band from Earth that journeys across the Universe for a chance to quality for the Intergalactic Battle of the Bands.
Vanguard Films has directed such duds as Valiant, Happily N’Ever After, Space Chimps and Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back. Hopefully bringing the likes of Stevenson on board to produce and direct will be a step into financial and critical success.
A new strategy has been put into place to prepare for the upcoming films according to a press release.

Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson has signed a multi-picture deal with John Williams’ Vanguard Films. Stevenson’s first project with Vanguard will be helming the live action/CGI hybrid film Alien Rock Band. Here’s how the press release describes the movie:
Plot revolves around a garage band from Earth which journeys across the Universe to qualify for a shot at superstardom in an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands. It won’t be easy – the band will have to out-shred four-armed alien guitarists, face-down tentacled, punker octo-drummers, and fight snarling alien monsters – with music as its only weapon.
Surprisingly, there’s no mention of alien cocaine or alien groupies. Hit the jump to learn about the other projects Stevenson and Vanguard will be collaborating on.
Here’s a breakdown of the other projects Stevenson and Vanguard will be making together:

John Williams' Vanguard Films has inked an overall producing and directing deal with John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) and formed a financing and distribution alliance with former president of Lakeshore International Peter Rogers' new company Moviemill. Up first for Stevenson is CGI/live-action hybrid Alien Rock Band, about a garage band in outerspace competing at an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands. Next is CG-animated Rotten Island, from Shrek author William Steig's book about an island where monsters reign until a flower changes everything. (People magazine writes: "Not since Maurice Sendak’s 'Where the Wild Things Are' has there been such a glorious nightmare of a book.”) Among the producing projects for Stevenson and Williams: animated film Buzby and live-action martial-arts adventure City of Dragons and fantasy adventure ...

Shrek the Musical
My guess is that, unless the difficult economic times intervene, Shrek the Musical, the new Broadway production based on the hit animated film, which in itself came from the story and characters from a book by William Steig, will please a lot of people. While Shrek the Musical may not be the type of show that appeals completely to me, it still has its moments. In fact, if the entire musical were as good as its best scenes, Shrek would be a real winner. It is still better than many of the Broadway musicals adapted from hit animated movies, but it is uneven in spots, and the score never quite elevates it as much as might be hoped for.

Just as the big green ogre is about to storm into theaters with Shrek the Third, Mike Mitchell is in negotiations to direct Shrek 4 for DreamWorks Animation.
Penned by Tim Sullivan, the fourth installment will chronicle the continuing adventures of Shrek and his buddies, which is based on the children's book "Shrek!" written by William Steig and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Josh Klausner recently penned a rewrite.
DreamWorks Animation's Jeffrey Katzenberg, Bill Damaschke, Kristine Belson and Chris Kuser are overseeing for the studio. Producing credits are being worked out.
The Shrek series is a massive moneymaker for DWA. The first movie grossed $484.4 million worldwide, while the second one raked in $920.7 million.
Mitchell, whose helming credits include Sky High and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, isn't a stranger to the world of animation. He directed a SpongeBob SquarePants episode this year. He also helmed the award-winning short Herd. He is repped by CAA and attorney Ken Richman.
Klausner, a second-unit director for many Farrelly flicks who turned to writing, is repped by WMA.

HarperCollins Children's Books, one of the leading publishers of books for young readers with such titles as Charlotte's Web and the Lemony Snicket books, has pacted with the Gotham Group, founded by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, for representation for film, television, video and allied rights. With the agreement, Gotham, which already reps Simon & Schuster's children and young adult libraries and such authors and illustrators as Tony Diterlizzi and Maurice Sendak, increases its dominance in the area of repping literary rights to kid lit that is looking to make the transition to the screen. HarperCollins publishes about 500 children's books annually, and though it doesn't retain the rights to all of them, its library numbers in the thousands. Some of the authors who will be represented include William Steig (Shrek), Katherine Paterson, Beverly Cleary, Margaret Wise Brown, Jack Prelutsky, Sarah Weeks and Aliki.
A decade after bringing William Steig's book Shrek to DreamWorks, producer John H. Williams has optioned a second title from the children's author. The Vanguard Animation founder has optioned exclusive rights to The Zajaba Jungle from the late cartoonist's estate. Jungle has as its main character a young boy who must leave the safety of his own back yard to trek through a dense, fantastical jungle to find his captured parents.
