Cannes is, ultimately, both an exhibition of wonderful films and a celebration of the very medium, but there’s a very good amount of business taking place after the screenings finish — and, many times, for films that don’t even play in competition. So, as things kick off over in France, Variety reports that The Weinstein Company have procured international rights to The Sapphires, a music biopic — starring, most notably, Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) — that will play as part of the festival’s Midnight Screenings.
The film tells of four Aboriginal girls (Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens, and Miranda Tapsell) that are snatched up by a rowdy Irish producer (O’Dowd), who takes them to Vietnam to entertain American soldiers during the war. Wayne Blair directed the film, while Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson have written the screenplay.
Next up, Toh (via ThePlaylist) says TWC is also angling toward James Gray‘s Low Life, »

So I spent all of last night exuberantly "Oh No You Maggie Smith'nt!"* with friends over the 2 hour season premiere of Downton Abbey. Then I spent the better part of today at a table full of Oscar voters picking their brains (in a polite conversational way, mind you) at a luncheon for The Artist. More on both of those events soon but between last night and today, so many OscarQuakes or at least golden tremors.
*joke stolen from Patton Oswalt
Let's discuss four of them immediately!
1. Hunger Games beauty Jennifer Lawrence will announce the Oscar nominations.
Usually people dress somewhat sedately for that super Am event but we're hoping Jennifer pulls out another one of those va va voom numbers she kept finding for last year's awards circus. The nomination event happens so early in the morning and if Jennifer wears skin tight white or form fitting red again, »

We shared the first stills last year, but now we have the first teaser for an promising upcoming Sundance in-competition drama Keep the Lights On. From director Ira Sachs (Married Life) the film stars Thure Lindhardt, Zachary Booth, Julianne Nicholson, Souleymane Sy Savane, Paprika Steen and is an “an autobiographically inspired story of a passionate long-term relationship between two men driven by addiction and secrets but bound by love and hopefulness.”
THR has the trailer below, along with an extended interview with the director who says, “I hope that people feel like they’ve gone through the journey of a long, deep, complex, troubled, rich, passionate relationship — that’s all I’m setting out to do.” Judging from this emotionally stirring teaser he is on the right track to succeed. I have yet to see last year’s indie hit Weekend, but this seems to cover similar territory with cross-over in style, »

Following up the initial announcement of titles, the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival revealed it will open with the period drama Les Adieux à la reine (Farewell My Queen) today. From director Benoît Jacquot, the drama stars Inglourious Basterds lead Diane Kruger, as well as Léa Seydoux who broke-out in Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol this year. Based on, Chantal Thomas’ novel we have the first stills of the film (from Lumiere via The Playlist) that follows the “first few days of the French Revolution from the perspective of the servants at Versailles.”
Kruger, who plays Marie Antoinette here, has only appeared in one big film following her post-Basterds role with Unknown, but I look forward to her future work, especially with this film. I thought Seydoux was great as an action villain in Ghotocol and excited to see her career rise. Check out the stills below, »
