Originally set for an October theatrical release, the Robert Zemeckis-directed Warner Bros. feature Roald Dahl’s The Witches is heading to the studio’s streaming service HBO Max on Oct. 22.
The movie, which stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci, is being positioned as Halloween season event programming for HBO Max. Initially, The Witches was scheduled to open on Oct. 16, before being moved a week to Oct. 9. Then, back in June, Warner Bros. undated the film from the theatrical release schedule.
While this expression gets overused in describing the push-and-pull of studios and exhibition during the pandemic, it’s really a chicken-and-egg-scenario. Lauren Miller Rogen had big plans in 2012. Her first feature, “For a Good Time, Call…,” written alongside her college roommate Katie Anne Naylon and loosely based on the pair’s own adventures, debuted at Sundance and was subsequently bought by Focus Features for a summer release, establishing her as a major talent to watch. She was ready to move onto the next stage of her career and direct a feature.
Then, life got in the way: Her mother had just been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, and the disease was advanced enough that Miller Rogen and her husband, fellow actor and filmmaker Seth Rogen, moved her parents to Los Angeles to be closer. Two weeks later, Miller Rogen left for the press tour for “For a Good Time, Call…” It was an understandably “emotional time” for her, she said in a recent interview. Forrest Gump was a huge hit - but it's worth remembering just what a massive, massive gamble it was. Here's just a slice of that story...
Few major Hollywood blockbusters of the 1990s can lay claim to being some kind of cultural phenomenon, but surely Forrest Gump can. Love or loathe the film, its dialogue has slipped into everyday language, it’s inspired a spin-off bunch of restaurants, and it’s one of the top grossing films of the decade. Oh, and it won a bunch of Oscars, including a second consecutive Best Actor win for Tom Hanks.
It’s often said that the most successful films, though, have tumultuous behind the scene stories. I remember when Richard Donner directed Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas in Assassins (based on a heavily butchered script by the pre-Matrix Wachowskis), and it was widely reported that the shoot was a calm and very pleasurable one.

Jj Abrams on Monday evening hinted at his support for Screening Room as he collected the CinemaCon Showman Of The Year award from the very people who stand to lose the most should the disruptive distribution platform become reality.
The development at Caesars Palace during the Paramount Pictures presentation illustrated the relative impotence of the exhibition community faced with a tide of change that threatens to engulf the traditional releasing model.
Abrams had already made public his support for Sean Parker and Prem Akkaraju’s controversial proposal before CinemaCon and offered some insight when he took to the Colosseum stage.
“Much has been said of technologies that threaten the theatre experience — and I’m no expert, and I’m open to all points of view and good ideas to keep theatres thriving — but we need to do everything we can in this age of piracy, digital technology and disruption to be thoughtful partners in the evolution of this...

The film is a Paramount Pictures, Gk Films and New Regency project. In June, TheWrap reported that Pitt and Cotillard will play assassins who fall in love during a mission to kill a German official. They soon marry, but their romance is cut short when Pitt learns a devastating secret about his wife that prompts him to turn on her. Zemeckis is also producing the romantic spy drama with his longtime collaborator Steve Starkey as well as Graham.

Marion Cotillard could be rubbing shoulders with Brad Pitt in one of her next movie roles.
According to Variety, the French actress is in negotiations with Paramount and New Regency about appearing in Robert Zemeckis's new untitled spy thriller.
The script for the movie was developed by Steven Knight, who will serve as producer alongside Zemeckis and Steve Starkey on the project.
Cotillard's participation was almost a no-go, as her schedule is a little packed with Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed.
Efforts have apparently been made to push production back to the first quarter of 2016 in order to fit the actress in.
In December, Cotillard was named best European Actress at the European Film Awards.

Briefly: Paramount Pictures announced a new project today without a title or plot, but since Forrest Gump and Cast Away director Robert Zemeckis and actor Brad Pitt are attached to the film, it's still a pretty big deal. The film is merely described as a "sweeping romantic thriller" that comes from an original story by Steve Knight (The Hundred-Foot Journey, Dirty Pretty Things). In addition, it will be produced by Graham King (The Departed, Argo) and his Gk Films banner, who developed the project with Zemeckis and Real Steel producer Steve Starkey. This must be a hell of a project to announce without any details.

Robert Zemeckis, who is in post-production on his true-story adaptation The Walk right now, is teaming up with Brad Pitt for a mysterious new film for Paramount Pictures. Steven Knight, the writer/director behind Locke, Peaky Blinders, and Redemption (he also wrote Eastern Promises and - this is baffling to me - has a screenwriting credit on the Jeff Bridges-starrer Seventh Son) wrote the script based on his original idea, and Graham King of Gk Films will produce alongside Zemeckis and Steve Starkey (Flight, Real Steel).
Not much is known about the movie at this point. The press release I got calls it "epic" and a "sweeping romantic thriller," and The Wrap says that a source close to the film tells them it will take place during World War II. If true, that'll be three major WWII-set projects for Pitt over the past few years, following Inglourious Basterds and Fury.

Paramount Pictures has announced today that one of their next top-shelf projects has locked in Brad Pitt to star with Robert Zemeckis set to direct. A co-op production that also includes Gk Films and New Regency, the movie has been described as a “sweeping romantic thriller” based on an original screenplay by Steve Knight.
For the screenwriter, this will no doubt come as welcome news. Knight’s latest theatrical title – Seventh Son – hasn’t exactly lit up the critical barometer nor the box office. The fact that two of the industry’s biggest names, Pitt and Zemeckis, are making one of his scripts is a big deal. After all, he also penned Locke and Eastern Promises, both solid character-based pieces, so this new talented crew ought to steer his newest script back on course.
Aside from the fact that the film is described as “epic” and “sweeping,” there’s not much else to go on.

Here’s a surprise from Sony that wasn’t forcefully revealed by hackers: A first-look teaser for The Walk, the debut feature from Tom Rothman’s revived Sony-based TriStar Productions, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as real life high wire artist Philippe Petit. Robert Zemeckis directs the 3D experiential film set in 1974, when Frenchman Petit attempted a daring cross of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, gravity and arrogance his only nemeses. Well, they were simpler times. Petit’s story was immortalized in the Oscar-winning 2008 documentary Man On Wire.
Gordon-Levitt most recently hit the big screen in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and taps a background in gymnastics and add a Petit accent for The Walk, which marks Zemeckis’ latest directorial effort after Flight. Zemeckis co-scripted with Christopher Browne based on Petit’s memoirs and is also producing with ImageMovers’ Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. Sony has set an October 2, 2015 release.
