Father-in-law of John Clements.
Perhaps best remembered as "Colonel Tom Stone", autocratic father of the fledgling "Lieutenant Donald Stone" (played by Richard Cromwell), in Henry Hathaway's The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935).
Son of silent-screen actor Herbert Standing.
Brother of actor Wyndham Standing and Jack Standing.
Father, with Dorothy Hammond, of Michael Frederick Cecil Standing (b. 28th February 1910), controller of Entertainment for the BBC, Kay Hammond and Guy Standing Jr..

He died from a rattlesnake bite during one of his frequent hikes in the Hollywood Hills. In an eerie coincidence, on the very same day he died the co-writer of Palm Springs (1936), Humphrey Pearson, one of Guy's last films, died in Palm Springs of a gunshot wound.

He was awarded a military Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1919 King's Honours List for his services to military in World War I.
He is interred at Grand View Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles, California.
He served in the British Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve throughout the First World War, reaching the rank of Commander. In 1918, he was part of the British War Mission to the United States. For this service, he was awarded a military CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1918 King's Honours List.
