Rob Marshall says Johnny Depp's "The Thin Man" isn't a remake, movie version of "Wicked" would pull from stage and book

10 November 2011 11:10 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Nick still needs a Nora.

A new version of Dashiell Hammett's "The Thin Man" is moving forward, and director Rob Marshall has made key decisions about what the film will be like -- but some questions remain, such as who will play Johnny Depp's wife?

"I think anticipation [for the film] must be high," Marshall said while attending the Princess Grace Awards gala last week in New York. "People are even asking me, 'Are you going to write it?'"

Marshall won't be handling those duties -- screenwriter Billy Ray ("The Hunger Games," "Shattered Glass") is now aboard, after Jerry Stahl ("Permanent Midnight") and David Koepp ("Premium Rush," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"). "It's funny that those writers were even announced," Marshall said, "because we hadn't really started with either of them, with Jerry or David. Neither had written a word. Billy is the first writer who's actually writing a draft. »

Ben Stiller Directing... Horror?

20 October 2011 8:16 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

The Mountain is the name of the script by Helen Childress, and Ben Stiller wants to direct it.

Childress, which sounds like a fake name my friend Jessica and I came up with, wrote the 1992 ennui/angst Gen X flick Reality Bites in which Stiller starred. Apparently, The Mountain is a script version of the Edith Wharton's 1917 novel Summer, set in the early 1900s, in which a woman finds a strange object that makes her confront her horrific secreted past. The protagonist of the novel, Charity Royall, has a sexual awakening despite the horrible abuse she suffers at the hands of her husband - there's also a brooch and several men who treat her like shit. How exactly this has been turned into a "horror" story I'm not sure - unless you count early twentieth century mountain-people poverty as horrific, which I do.

Comedian Stiller may seem like an unlikely choice to direct horror, »

Billy Ray to Rewrite Johnny Depp’s ‘The Thin Man’

7 October 2011 1:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The new version of The Thin Man, which Johnny Depp set in motion at Warner Bros. last year, is still moving forward. The star has wanted to make a new film based on Dashiell Hammett's classic novel (which already spawned a six-film series and a television show) and last year roped in his Pirates 4 director Rob Marhsall to direct. Now Billy Ray (Shattered Glass, Breach) has been hired to draft a new script. THR [1] says that Warner Bros. considers the film a priority, as it naturally would with any Johnny Depp project. Ray is the latest writer after Jerry Stahl and David Koepp. The latter moved on when he and Marshall had creative differences. When Koepp was hired to write [2] we heard that The original intention is to take elements of the first two films and work them into one film, putting it into a period setting and »

Billy Ray Adapts "The Thin Man"

7 October 2011 4:58 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Billy Ray ("Shattered Glass," "Breach") has been set to pen the remake of "The Thin Man" at Warner Bros. Pictures, Infinitum Nihil Company and Langley Park Pictures says Risky Biz Blog.

The original 1934 film starred William Powell and Myrna Loy, and was based on Dashiell Hammett's novel which Ray is expected to go back to. The story follows a booze-swilling former detective named Nick Charles and his wealthy heiress wife Nora who investigate a murder that involves an eccentric inventor and his bizarre family.

These polished and sophisticated society types spend as much time engaging in witty banter with each other as they do investigating the crime. Five sequels were produced. Johnny Depp is already set to play Nick.

David Koepp ("Secret Window") and Jerry Stahl were previously attached to pen the script. Koepp left when "his vision didn’t line up" with director Rob Marshall. Depp, Marshall, DeLuca, »

Johnny Depp Lining Up Producing and Starring Job on Dr. Seuss Biopic; ‘The Thin Man’ Lands Billy Ray As New Writer

6 October 2011 10:41 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I’ve kept saying over the past few years that Johnny Depp‘s only chance at being a real actor again is to take more dramatic roles — or, ones that don’t involve pirates, Tim Burton, or being a tourist. Then again, when you look at how he treats these movies, such a bad streak may not change anytime soon.

Don’t abandon all hope, though; according to THR, the actor is producing and possibly starring in a biopic of famed children’s author Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. With Keith Bunin writing, Illumination Entertainment (producers of The Lorax) and Infinitum Nihil are producing for Universal — and although the actor is only attached in the same capacity at the moment, the option to star is open. When judging him on the past decade, Depp seems like someone who would take this up for himself. Those of you hoping »

Billy Ray Adapting The Thin Man for Johnny Depp and Director Rob Marshall

6 October 2011 7:39 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When it comes to writing a hard-boiled detective story, few are better than Dashiell Hammett (The Maltese Falcon). As for adapting those stories to the screen, few do it as expertly as Billy Ray (State of Play). Ray has been tapped to pen the current Warner Bros. adaptation of Hammett’s novel The Thin Man, starring Johnny Depp as Nick Charles, a retired private eye who maintains his drinking habit. Although Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II) and David Koepp (Spider-Man) were initially on board for the script, director Rob Marshall decided to go in another direction and Ray landed the job. Personally, I think Marshall made the right choice. The Thin Man is more of a light-hearted murder mystery than Hammett’s other works, as the plot revolves around a married couple solving crimes while bantering back and forth. Though Depp can easily portray a wise-cracking, alcoholic, the equally witty »

David Koepp Is Scripting ‘The Thin Man’ Remake For Johnny Depp

31 August 2011 7:19 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

A day without talk about a new Hollywood remake would be like a day without talk about a new Johnny Depp movie. “Fortunately,” today we have an update on a project that is both those things: A remake of The Thin Man, which will reunite Depp with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides helmer, Rob Marshall.

It turns out the new Thin Man will also reunite Depp with his Secret Window screenwriter and director David Koepp, who has been hired to script the flick (rather than Bad Boys II scriber Jerry Stahl, as was previously rumored).

Koepp has essentially been one of Hollywood’s go-to screenwriters for the last two decades – and that doesn’t look to change anytime soon. Over the past year alone, he’s been brought onboard to smooth out the scripts for ...

David Koepp Writing The Thin Man

30 August 2011 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

He may not be able to control what happens with The Lone Ranger’s budget worries, but Johnny Depp is much more firmly in charge of his plan to get a new take on The Thin Man into cinemas, hiring David Koepp to start writing a script for the film that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall will bring to life.Back in March, Depp engaged Permanent Midnight’s Jerry Stahl to take a crack at adapting Dashiel Hammett’s fifth and final novel, which appeared in 1934 and was almost immediately filmed with William Powell in the lead. But according to Deadline, Stahl never actually cranked anything out, so now the even more experienced Koepp is aboard instead.Koepp will reportedly go back to the source novel, which finds retired detective Nick Charles (the role Depp will play) marrying wealthy socialite Nora and generally boozing it »

Johnny Depp’s ‘Thin Man’ Remake Reveals a New Writer and Some New Details

30 August 2011 3:37 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I’ve reported on the Thin Man remake that Johnny Depp is attached to star in a couple times before. First, there was the news that “Permanent Midnight” author Jerry Stahl would be writing the new screenplay for the film. Then there was word that past Depp collaborator Rob Marshall would be stepping in to direct. A new round of updates on the development of this project seem to confirm that, yes, Marshall is still attached to sit in the director’s chair. However, it seems that Stahl never actually did any writing for the film, so the suits have gotten a new guy to start a script from scratch. According to Deadline Rockland, veteran screenwriter David Koepp has now been charged with the duty of updating the exploits of married P.I. team Nick and Nora Charles. Koepp’s name doesn’t really tell me much about what to expect from this movie. He »

David Koepp Writing ‘The Thin Man’ For Johnny Depp and Rob Marshall

30 August 2011 3:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I think any lingering interest I had in Johnny Depp's remake of The Thin Man, to be directed [1] by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall, just evaporated. It's the one-two punch of hiring David Koepp to write the script, and the fact that part of the plan is to create a version of The Thin Man that has "a Sherlock Holmes-like stylized treatment." (With Holmes there referring to the Guy Ritchie movie that has become a near-ubiquitous touchstone when talking about a period film with comic action leanings.) Deadline [2] reports on the hire and the stylistic choice, noting that some time ago Jerry Stahl would write [3], but that deal didn't go through. So David Koepp will go back to the original novel by Dashiell Hammett -- a really fun, breezy read that is just about perfect as a template for a film. (Which explains »

David Koepp To Write ‘The Thin Man’ For Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp

30 August 2011 2:38 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The stalled (possibly dead) production of The Lone Ranger seems to be giving Johnny Depp time to play another famous character, Nick Charles, in the Rob Marshall-directed remake of The Thin Man. Earlier reports indicated that the screenplay would be written by Jerry Stahl, who’s best known for Bad Boys II, but Deadline now says that scripting duties are being handled by David Koepp.

His career has many big entries in it — some of them are very good (Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds), while others are terrible (The Lost World, Angels & Demons); because of that, it’s hard to get a true reading on the guy, even though he’s been working for decades. Also on his track record are some smaller projects, one of which is Secret Window, a film that he directed, and which starred none other than Johnny Depp. That movie happens to be »

David Koepp Set to Script 'The Thin Man' Adaptation for Johnny Depp

30 August 2011 1:22 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Back in March we learned that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall would re-team with franchise star Johnny Depp for an adaptation of The Thin Man, an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's 1934 novel. With The Lone Ranger currently on halt, Deadline says Depp is moving forward on getting the project off the ground and the first order of business is bringing on Jurassic Park and Mission Impossible writer David Koepp to script the project. Previously Jerry Stahl (writer of Bad Boys II and episodes of "CSI") was said to be writing the scrip, but Koepp will be starting from scratch. Hammett's novel follows Nick Charles who, after marrying wealthy, young socialite Norah, gives up a career as a hard-boiled gumshoe to become a semi-professional alcoholic and full-time trophy husband. The original story spawned a six film franchise at MGM »

Johnny Depp's The Thin Man Hires David Koepp To Write The Script

30 August 2011 12:48 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When it comes to big budget screenwriting few are more hit or miss than David Koepp. While the writer has written some great movies, like Jurassic Park and Spider-Man, he's also the man with the pen behind movies like Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Angels & Demons. You never know what you're going to get, but director Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp are hoping for the best from his newest project. Deadline reports that David Koepp has been hired to write the script for the remake of The Thin Man. Originally there was talk that Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II) would be getting the gig, but, according to the site, "apparently nothing got written" and Koepp was brought on board. The project reunites Marshall and Depp, who worked together on this summer's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Depp is also producing the project. Based »
