When Johnny Depp wants to make a movie, it usually gets done and his latest pet project is a remake of the 1934 mystery/comedy The Thin Man with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall at the helm. "The Thin Man has long been a favorite of mine and with Rob at the helm, I know we're in great hands" Depp told Deadline.
Studio Warner Bros. clearly agrees. "There is no one more perfectly suited to portray Nick Charles than Johnny Depp," said Warners president Jeff Robinov.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp is reportedly eager to play another booze-obsessed character, specifically Nick Charles of the classic Thin Man series of films. Depp is after his current Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall to helm a remake of the 1934 original. The property has a rich heritage as Dashiell Hammett wrote the original novel and respected actors William Powell and Myrna Loy starred in six films based on the material. The stories centered on Nick and Nora Charles, a wealthy couple who spend a frequent amount of time exchanging witty banter and indulging in a few drinks. Nick has given up a career as a detective to enjoy life as a trophy husband, relying on the wealth of his wife. Of course, the couple always find themselves involved in a mystery of some kind and eventually have to solve the case. For anyone excited about this news, »
Suddenly the hot writing job at Warner Bros is the 76-year old film The Thin Man, because Johnny Depp wants to remake it with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall. The studio already has put together a short list of Terry Rossio, Jerry Stahl and Christopher McQuarrie, each of whom have worked previously with Depp. And like the actor, they are fans of the Dashiell Hammett novel and the series of six MGM films that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy. Depp sparked to playing the role of Nick, who marries a young socialite and settles into a life of drinking and occasional sleuthing. No word on who'll play Norah. "The Thin Man has long been a favorite of mine and with Rob at the helm, I know we're in great hands," Depp said. Added Warner Bros Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov: "There is no »

Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. Vulture's Josef Adalian is reporting that Kevin Spacey is in attached to star in Rod Lurie's drama pilot The Crux, about a charismatic cult leader, which is currently being pitched to various networks. (Should the project go forward, Spacey would executive produce with Lurie, Dana Brunetti, and Marc Frydman.) While Adalian reports that talks have begun between Spacey's camp and Showtime (as well as possibly HBO), Deadline's Nellie Adreeva adds that the project is currently being pitched to Showtime, HBO, FX, and Starz, with all four said to be in the running to land the much buzzed project from Lurie (Commander In Chief), who will write the script. Timing, however, may be a key factor. "One stumbling block could be Spacey's schedule," writes Adalian. "In addition to various film roles, a big chunk of Spacey's day planner is filled fulfilling (and »
