Oscar Race at the 2016 Halfway Mark: Diversity and Confusion

24 June 2016 11:03 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As 2016 hits the halfway point, the Oscar race is even fuzzier than usual. Two things are clear: The studios are back-loading their awards hopefuls yet again, with launches at fall festivals and/or the fourth quarter; and there are more diverse films in the mix, with at least 16 potential biggies from filmmakers who are women, Asians, Latino-Hispanics, black and seniors (i.e., over 65).

In the past few years, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Boyhood” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” had been widely screened and started industry buzz by late June. This year, there is a lot of industry enthusiasm for a few January-to-June titles such as “Zootopia,” “The Jungle Book” and “The Witch.” But best-pic contenders? Not so sure.

The festivals so far have offered possibilities like “Manchester by the Sea” and “Loving.” And some pundits anointed “The Birth of a Nation” as the Oscar front-runner last January (a mixed blessing for Fox Searchlight, »

As Stacey Snider Ascends at Fox, Hollywood Is in Turnaround

17 June 2016 9:44 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

At the 2014 New York Film Festival premiere of “Gone Girl,” Twentieth Century Fox Film Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos seemed visibly relieved to have Stacey Snider finally join the studio, after months of speculation that this capable executive would join him from DreamWorks. Now, almost two years later —and after a 25-year career at Fox —the studio has confirmed that Gianopulos’ contract will not be renewed after it expires on June 30, 2017, when he will graduate “upstairs” into an executive role at parent company 21st Century Fox.

This follows a transition for Snider that has not been smooth. While the veteran exec has the right mix of skills to run a studio (and did so at Universal with Ron Meyer), knows how to manage a team of executives, and how to develop, produce, and release movies that are smart and four-quadrant friendly, entering the Fox landscape proved to be a challenge. »

2016 Emmy Contenders: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

7 June 2016 2:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

After five nominations for playing Sheila Jackson on “Shameless,” Joan Cusack finally took home the guest actress prize last year. And just in time — she didn’t appear in the show’s most recent season.

That opens the cateogry to a whole new winner, and it might just be someone who will be doubling up on noms this year. Ellen Burstyn [“Mom”] is also a potential nominee for her work on the drama “House of Cards,” as is Carrie Fisher [“Catastrophe”] for “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.” Tovah Feldshuh stole the show with her “Where’s the Bathroom” number in “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” but could also score a nod on the drama side for her guest work on ‘The Walking Dead.”

Natasha Lyonne [“Portlandia”] did standout work on “Orange Is the New Black,” where her character is sorely missed. Cynthia Nixon [“Broad City”] and Judy Greer [“Mom”] are other actresses pulling double duty on the comedy and drama sides. »

5 June 2016 12:26 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Disney has had a dominant first half of the year at the box office, with the studio distributing three of the top 5 movies both domestically and worldwide. Captain America: Civil War currently leads both here in the states ($338.9 million) and overseas ($1.1 billion). Over the weekend, Disney's Zootopia also crossed $1 billion worldwide. However, Zootopia is currently fourth on the domestic charts with $337.2 million, behind the studio's third big hit this year, The Jungle Book ($347.7 million), 20th Century Fox's Deadpool ($362.9 million) and Captain America: Civil War.

Deadline reports that Zootopia earned an addition $4.4 million internationally to cross the $1 billion plateau. There have only been 26 movies in history that have crossed $1 billion, 11 of which have been distributed by Disney. Zootopia is also only the fourth animated movie to cross $1 billion, following Disney Pixar's Toy Story 3 ($1.06 billion), Universal's Minions ($1.1 billion) and Disney's Frozen ($1.2 billion). Octavia Spencer Explains Why Her New Movie About Black Women at ’60s Nasa Is Seriously Overdue

Octavia Spencer opened up about the historical significance of her next film “Hidden Figures,” and why the story that inspired it is so meaningful to her — and overdue to be told. The Fox 2000 project stars Spencer, Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae — and tells the true story of three female African-American mathematicians who served as the brains behind Nasa’s Friendship 7 mission. Their calculations helped astronaut John Glenn become the first American to orbit the Earth in February 1962. “I thought it was fiction. Zootopia Now Stands As Second Largest Original Movie In History

30 May 2016 12:24 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Featuring a cracking voice cast, lush animation and an entertaining story at its heart, Zootopia not only proved to be one of this year’s early crowd-pleasers, it also soared close to $1 billion at the international box office.

That’s an impressive tally as is, but what really fired Byron Howard and Rich Moore’s animation into the history books was the fact that Zootopia stands as a successful movie, yes, but also an original one. In a report by Forbes, the outlet reveals that Howard and Moore’s adventure is now second only to James Cameron’s Avatar in Hollywood’s ranking of highest-grossing original movies; that is, feature films “not based on a television show, a comic book, a novel, or a stage play.”

This, coupled with the barnstorming success of Captain America: Civil War has ensured Disney’s box office haul for the year is nearing $4 billion in total. »

Guillermo Del Toro’s Supernatural Cold War Romance Draws In Michael Shannon

11 May 2016 1:48 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Remaining in largely the same sub-genre from last year’s gothic-horror Crimson Peak, prolific filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has started to cast the net in search of an ensemble to topline his latest creative venture – an otherworldly and as-yet-untitled Cold War romance.

Ever the master of keeping audiences on tenterhooks, details regarding del Toro’s new project are shrouded in mystery for the time being, though we understand that Shannon is in line to join a cast that already boasts Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Set against the throes of the Cold War, The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the Midnight Special star has been offered the villain role in the “mysterious and magical journey,” which evokes more than a few memories of Guillermo del Toro’s older films, including Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone in particular.

If Crimson Peak was a step towards the director’s horror roots, »

Michael Shannon Drinks Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Water’; Idris Elba to Play ‘Molly’s Game’; Oscar Isaac Is ‘A Foreigner’

9 May 2016 11:54 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The intensity of Michael Shannon‘s onscreen presence and the overwhelming (sometimes too-overwhelming) authorial control wielded by Guillermo del Toro may very well be a match made in Heaven. We should soon have a sense of their compatibility: the latter is looking to cast the former in his Fox Searchlight-backed Cold War romance, supposedly titled The Shape of Water, which has secured Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins. [The Wrap]

Here’s the synopsis that came in last week:

We’re hearing that the fairytale, set in 1963, centers around Elisa (Hawkins), a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor (Jenkins). The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated. »
